Re Biergarten: it is an Americanized version in some ways of German food. But my wife and I are both of mostly German descent, and to us a lot of the food at Biergarten is "comfort food"--the kind of food you associate with family gatherings or with holidays or with grandmother's cooking. So we love the food there. But you might laugh at the CM's costumes and the oompah band...

I just found your reviews and am enjoying them very much, thank you I loved the picture you posted of the seating area outside the Flame Tree restaurant. It's so much prettier than I realized it would be!

I'm wondering what you thought of these seasoned oils you dip bread in? I've read about this many times here at the DIS but I have never seen or tried it myself (maybe an American thing?). To me it seems like it would be a little greasy.

I am really enjoying your reviews too. My father is originally from Germany and my mother is from Russia. When we have relatives from Germany visit, they won't eat corn. I guess they are not used to having it. It is interesting to get your views on American food. My family will be going to WDW in November and I can't wait.

I love your reviews. I think it is great to get the viewpoint of others who are not comparinig the same food from different parts of this country, but rather the authentic, original tasting of food that is less familiar. There are so many different types of foods depending of which region of the US you visit. I'd be curious to know what you thought of the food at POFQ which is authentic creole or cajin food from what we call "The Bayou". I think Shutters would be a great choice. Also, Liberty Tree Tavern at MK with its regional "American" cuisine, especially with the cranberries and turkey and meatloaf, would be a great choice. Have you eaten at any of these.

I'm hooked on this food report. I love your perspective. My husband travels quite a bit and he loved the food when he visited Germany. He was very surprised when they put brown gravy on his fries (he liked it )

Thanks for the description of Biergarten, I am getting more and more intrigued by it, I guess I will have to try it sometime!

The outdoor seating at Flame Tree is extremely beutiful, you just have to wander around a bit to get to the really lovely places. I liked it so much that I took lots of pictures there, hope you enjoy them!

And with regard to dipping your bread in oil, I actually think it is mediteranian. I have seen this in Italy and Southern France a lot. Since you usually get a high class oil (often olive oil) maybe with something to give additional taste to it, it is very tasty and depending on how deep you dip your bread into it, it does not have to be very greasy at all! I like it a lot, but I also love butter. The great thing at WDW that every place does it a bit differently!

re going to Biergarten, I forgot to say--one time we were there and we did share a table with an older German couple--but they had been on an extended US trip (for a month or so) and they were there only because they said they were really hungry for German food. I don't think they thought it was as good as they got at home (esp. the sausage) but they did eat everything on their plates. And they emptied their beer mugs.

Hi stepdisney, thanks for your comment! Unfortuantely I have not been to POFQ. When I was planning my very first trip (which ended up being cancelled because I went to Africa instead) Bonfamille was still open and this was definitely on my list. Liberty Tree Tavern is one of those restaurants that I have not yet managed to get to, but which is on my list. I am not so sure of the character meal there, but I think I ought to try it for lunch. It is interesting that you recommend Shutters, I was thinking about it, but the menue seemed to be very standard - as most of the moderate's restaurants: steak, salmon, chicken and pasta. I would love to try some Caribbean influenced food!

I can assure you however, not everywhere in Germany they put gravy on fries! I do not like it and when the dish sounds like it might come with gravy, I make sure that it does not come near my fries! But then most dishes served with gravy would be served with pasta, boiled potatoes or potato dumplings! But I am glad that it did not spoil your husbands enjoyment of German cuisine!

I'm loving your report! I lived in Wiesbaden for 5 years when I was stationed there in the Air Force. We often visited Nurnberg and I still get "homesick" for the sausages that they serve at the Kriskindlmarkt. I have a poster of the Schoner (sorry, can't find an umlaut key!) Brunnen hanging in my office to remind me of all the happy times I spent there.
I guess that BBQ is as American as it gets. But I'd trade all of that right now for a good wurst from a Schnell Imbiss!

Great reviews. I am very impressed at your command of the English language. I lived in Germany for 3 years during my teens and I have very fond memories of Schnell Imbiss. Your reviews are great and I am really appreciating your views on the food. We also love the variety of food that is available when we go to the US and I love reading the various dining reports. I've been to Prague and to Vienna, and I spent one memorable half hour racing through the Frankfurt airport to make a connecting flight, but that's as close as I've been to the real Germany. However, my heritage is at least one half German on both my mother and father's sides, and I look forward to visiting your beautiful country for real some day.
