Our Quest for American Food - and Pictures of it

Your dining reviews are excellent. Thank you.

I followed the link for the bread. The photos were great, but I couldn't read a single word. :rotfl: If I ever visit Germany, I am going to have difficulty ordering. :upsidedow

Quick German lesson, all you need to know.

I like the Pfister Oko Dinkel brot. It's 90% Dinkel and 10% Rossen. :) Anyway, it looks good :thumbsup2.

your reviews!!! Especially Cali Grill...on my list for next time...the cheese plate pushed me over the edge!!!

I just found your report and am really enjoying it. Had to post and tell you even though I am only on page 3. :thumbsup2

Your pictures are beautiful, and your English is excellent.

My famliy is German American, several generations removed, but we grew up with all German American cooking.
When I married my dh, whose family is southern, I got to taste a lot of new things: barbeque sauce, southern fried chicken, biscuits and gravy.

We're actually trying Biergarten for the first time this trip, but I have a feeling it is going to taste very familiar (German American, LOL).

[Funny note - my grandparents always called bars/places that served alcohol "biergartens" and were appalled when they would see their neighbors car there. LOL Guess I would be in trouble if they were still around and found out I was going to Florida to go to the biergarten. ;) ]

Looking forward to reading the rest.

Another great review and I agree with angel food cake, we don't get it here either!

Great reviews! I love reading the German perspective on American food. Thank you for sharing your reviews and photographs. :)

I'm not surprised you had a disappointing meal in Mexico; it's my least favorite dining pavilion in Epcot. And i LOVE Mexican food, but it's not a great example of Mexican cuisine there at Epcot.

And the angel food cake at 50s Prime Time is great; just had it last weekend--excellent!

I think yours is the most impressive review of California Grill that I have ever read on the DISboards....You not only capture the feeling of the restaurant, but your description of the food is superlative!

Thank you so much for your excellent reviews!!! Although I have never eaten at California Grill, we have a ressie for this coming August. Your descriptions have made me feel like I have already eaten there!

Great, great job...Keep them coming!!!!

Thanks for the nice comment! I hope you have a fantastic meal at Californa Grill!

Don't worry, Germans have become much better in speaking English with tourists and then half of the fun of travelling abroad is the adventure of eating new things!! And no danger of ending u eating dog or so here...

Great reviews! Love all the pictures. Can't wait for more.

Sorry, it took me so long, but the next installment is on its way!!

I love your reviews! Everything looks so yummy at the California Grill (ok, not the raw tuna:rotfl: )but everything else, definitely! The cheese plate was very intriguing; can you tell me what is on the board below the slices of cheese?

from left to right: butter below the bread, then: apple chutney, honey comb (I had never eaten real honey comp, very intersting!), dates, raisins on the vine and poached pears. All these went very well with the cheeses that they were paired with!

just subscribing... the reviews are fantastic and I have 6 months to drool!!:rotfl2:

Thanks! I also loved reading all the reviews before my trip and really enjoyed writing this!

Another great review - what is the bread that was served with the cheese plate at CG please?

it was kind of toasted french bread with raisins in it. It was nice, but I was really to full to eat any of it and mainly concentrated on the cheese!

I like the Pfister Oko Dinkel brot. It's 90% Dinkel and 10% Rossen. :) Anyway, it looks good :thumbsup2.

I agree, it looks good. I think I need to try it one day! Pfister is the name of the bakery and my dictionary comes up with "spelt" as translation for Dinkel. It is related to wheat, but older. It is more tasty than wheat and it seems that many people who have trouble eating wheat can tolerate "spelt" So it is an organic spelt bread with 10% rye flour (Roggen) mixed in it...

your reviews!!! Especially Cali Grill...on my list for next time...the cheese plate pushed me over the edge!!!

Yes, the chees plate is great, just make sure to leave enough room for it, it is a huge portion!!!

Thanks for the nice comments, I am glad that you enjoy my reviews!

I could give you a really easy recipie!:)

Oh, that would be great! If you can PM it to me???

Well, I will have to make a poit to try the angel food cake there then on my next trip! And I think I will not further experiment with Mexico at Epcot anymore!!

I finally managed to write new reviews, so here they are:

Tuesday, February 13

We were still very full from our feast at California Grill, so no breakfast for us this morning.

Lunch at Cosmic Ray's (Magic Kingdom)

Another very early lunch around 11:30 am. Cosmic Ray was not crowded at all and both Carola and I had difficulties deciding what we wanted to eat. There are many different choices at this restaurant, but you have to make up your mind what you want to get before you get in line as every outlet has a different line. I found this a bit confusing and even though there was only one family in front of me, it still took me some time to get to my food. I really cannot complain, but made a metal note that this might be a problematic restaurant when it is busy in there!

We ended up with rather standard choices:

I had another burger (I really like burgers, I always think of bugers and ceasar's salad as the standard American food, so I tend to eat many burgers when I am in the USA). I liked the burger and the fixing bar. Since I now knew what a fixing bar is, I absolutely love this concept and it was a great addition to the burger! But I preferred the Pecos Bill one. Mainly because the fried mushrooms were more fried at Pecos Bill while at Cosmic Ray they seemed to be a bit more cooked, less fried. Otherwise I could not really find any difference.

This is my bacon double cheeseburger:

I again got carrots with it, but asked whether I could substitute my dessert for a side order of fries. The cast member at the register said at first it was not possible, so I was going to pay for them seperately and did not get a dessert. When I then was getting ready to give her the money for the fries, she said that she had substituted the dessert anyway... :confused3

Carola finally settled on a hot dog, I think it is the chili cheese dog:

I can't remember what kind of dessert she got, it looks like something with chocolate. I can tell you however that she liked her meal including the dessert!

Dinner at Boma (Animal Kingdom Lodge)

DSC00287.jpg

Unfortunately this is the end of the pictures in this report!! Both on our last evenings at AKL we ate at out hotel and were so unorganised that we needed to rush to our ADRs and totally forgot about the camera... I am still mad at me for forgetting to take it to Jiko. I think Boma is not such a great loss, as lawyergirl has achieved the ultimate Boma pictures: the entire buffet line! You can see it here:

http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=13639539&postcount=3808

Our ADR was for 8 pm and when we checked in we encountered a not very competent CM. She claimed that we had no ADR. I was certain that we had one as I had gotten a print out of all our ADRs from Lobby concierge after check in (which was a good thing, as that CM had found out that my name was misspelled on a number of our ADRs and I actually knew how to "misspell" my name at the different restaurants when checking in :) ). I could actually see how she was looking for my name and scrolling over it repeatedly on her computer screen. Well, she finally found us and we were told it would be a bit of a wait. We walked up to the lobby and sat there for about 5 min until our beeper went off, so not too bad a wait.

We got an ok table, in the corner just to the right of the entrance. It was good as there are a number of 2 person tables in this area, so it was a bit more quiet around us, but we were quite close to the drinks station, so some might not consider this a prime location. I ordered a Safari Martini as a drink as well as water. It is Van De Hum Tangerine liqueur, Absolut Citron, and a splash of cranberry juice and I had read about the Van de Hum and wanted to try it. It was nice, but obviously not memorable. I only remembered that I had it when I looked at the receipts from our meal...

The buffet was great, both Carola and I preferred the appetizers and desserts over the entrees. I thought that the entrees were much less interesting than the other dishes. I absolutely loved the butternut squash soup, it is great! Besides that I had quite a lot of the salads and the hummus with breads. I tried the prime rib (as this is another of those typical American things for me) but I think it is not the way I prefer my beef to be cooked. There was nothing wrong with it, but there were so many other things that I liked much better.

In general I found Boma to be interesting but not overly adventurous. I think most of the food is not spicy as in hot, the spices are mainly there for adding flavour. So things might taste a bit uncommon, often a bit sweet, but not hot.

I like Boma a lot, I think it is one of the restaurants that are absolutely unique and therefore will most likely return on every trip! However, there supposedly is a rotation of the dinner menu offerings. Recent posts here on the boards have stated that the one circulating here (see for example this post: http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=17601631&postcount=6 ) is not up to date, either that it has changed or that there is no strict rotation any more. However, we had dinner at Boma on Novermber 2, 2004 and February 13, 2007. Both days were Tuesdays and the food on the buffet was both time very similar and was what was listed in the rotation for Tuesdays. Also, I took the culinary tour of Jiko and Boma on a Thursday and I remember that the peanut rice was offered as well as the potato and bacon soup (which was delicious, I got to try the soup on the tour!!). So, I will make sure to eat at Boma on another day of the week the next time, preferrably on a Thursday...

Lovely reviews again - I agree that lawyergirls pictures of Boma are pretty good. I am sure one day we will get around to eating thre.

How on earth have I missed this review??????? I just spent the last hour reading every wonderful word. Can't wait for the rest!!:thumbsup2

How many extras did Carola put on her hot dog? :rotfl2:

Great reviews again :goodvibes

Thanks! Actually I think I was the one who went a bit over the top, I nearly added a side salad to my burger with all the lettuce and tomatoes I got! :goodvibes

Lovely reviews again - I agree that lawyergirls pictures of Boma are pretty good. I am sure one day we will get around to eating thre.

I am sure that you will get to Boma one day - I love collecting reasons why I must go back to WDW like I did not manage to eat breakfast at Boma so I need to plan a trip that can incorporate a breakfast at Boma... :rolleyes1

How on earth have I missed this review??????? I just spent the last hour reading every wonderful word. Can't wait for the rest!!:thumbsup2

Happy to hear that you liked it. Unfortunately there is not so much more to come, I think I need to stay longer next time to have more meals to write about!!! :cool2:

Great review again! Thanks for posting lawyergirl's pics of Boma's buffet. I have an ADR there for October but I'm just not feeling the love for Boma, and seeing the buffet has sealed it for me. I think I will change it, as there are just too many different things for my non-adventurous DH and DD to really enjoy it. I am, however, thinking of changing it to Cali Grill and your review there helped in that decision, also! Did you ever think posting a food review would give you so much power!

Angel Food Cake

1 1/4 cups flour
1 1/2 cups sugar, divided
1 1/2 cups egg whites (about 15 egg whites)
1 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla

Mix flour and 1/2 cup of sugar in a small bowl. Set aside.
In a large bowl whip egg whites untill they are frothy.
Add cream of tartar, salt, and vanilla. Whip on high speed untill the egg whites are stiff. Lower speed and gradually add remaining 1 cug of sugar and mix about 1 minute.

Gradually add flour-sugar mixture, one fourth at a time over egg whites. Fold gently with a spatula, just untill blended.

Pour batter into ungreased tube pan. You could also use a bundt pan or two bread pans. With a knife, gently cut through batter to remove large air bubbles. Bake at 375 for 35 minutes or untill crust is golden brown and cracks are very dry. Immediatly invert cake and cool completely.

eta.........I forgot to send this in a pm, sorry!!

I don't know how I missed your report before, but I am glad I found it today. The reviews were great as were the pictures.

Germany is one of only 2 European countries that I have visited. My sister and her family lived there a few years ago while my brother-in-law was in the Air Force. They were stationed at Ramstein, but I do not remember the name of the village where they lived. My husband and I visited them in 2005.

I did a terrible job with the German language so I applaud your English. We did visit France for a few days while we were staying with them and I have to say that I felt some relief as I had studied French for a few years and could pronounce things much better than in Germany and for the most part, I understood what I was reading.

We never got out to the Munich area or to Nuremberg, which is the one place my husband would have loved to visit.

Thank you for your report!

I am really enjoying your review! And I LOVE the photographs...makes me feel like I'm there. Thanks for taking pics of the restaurants...love the one of Pecos Bills and the one of the Flame Tree.

Great reviews!!! Can't wait to try my stomach at some of those great restaurants. Keep it up.
