Our little thread of BIG changes, the neverending saga of the Resort Changers

Only you guys would understand...

So we're booked at the Grand, which I've always wanted to stay at, for an awesome price, and it's on the monorail and a hop, skip, and jump away from MK where we'll be spending 2 out of our 4 days...

And yet, I'm looking at AKL and the mods and AoA...all of which it looks like I could do for similar price (but not cheaper)...

Happy Monday everybody! We are finally due to get above freezing in the next week. Yay! I am working from my brand new Lenovo laptop today. So far, so good!

Koh-Are you getting more snow? We are all going to be doing quite the happy dance when March 21st arrives. :woohoo:

Heather-I do love trip planning, fun to hear you do, too! Thanks again for the great photos you post. During this endless winter they are making me smile.:flower3:

Pas-Sending you some pixie dust to help your Megamillion chances!pixiedust:

Sparkly-Have fun!!!:dance3:

Dimndgal-You must be on pins and needles waiting to hear where you’re going next. Exciting times for your family. :goodvibes

-About the Olympics. I didn’t go to the opening ceremony, but I did go to a couple of curling events during the SLC Olympics. It was really, really fun. You don’t get the real feel of it from TV. We enjoyed just walking around, seeing everything, taking in the atmosphere. It was very exciting. A few years later, we went to Park City and toured some of the Olympic training facilities. I can still remember how amazingly high that ski jump is. The luge runs are something, too. If you get the chance to visit someday, I think you’d like it.

MM-You know me, I’m always thinking you guys would like at least a few days at AKL Cl. I’ll stay tuned to see what you all decide. Whatever you choose, it will be fun. :cool1:

Janet
-I totally agree about when to be at the airport. Seems like those crazy airlines come up with all sorts of inconvenient (and early!) times. What’s up with that?

So, I could get a preferred room at POR with tickets and dining included for slightly less than what we're paying now...but it definitely covers all our meals and snacks...and I can do the memory maker thing too...

Was looking at pics and definitely love the pool views in building 18 in the alligator bayou section. And everything looks so shady and peaceful...

What to do...?

It is definitely the time of  and :cool1: when we start to look at our next set of orders. Fortunately, we've always lucked out into some great places and great jobs for DH... even when they didn't look that way to start with! I'm also working on planning a surprise promotion party for him in April which has been AWESOME... he hates the spotlight but it's a chance time that all our close friends/family will be together and celebrate his accomplishments so I know he'll appreciate it. ((I hope!))

I have heard the same thing from people who made the Vancouver and Sydney games - the atmosphere is indescribable and the crowd is like no other. I love that you got to see Curling!!!! I've watched the Curling club nearby and they are INTENSE!!!! :cheer2:

No chance for a split-stay?
I loved the grounds of POR and the resort was just so much fun... BUT, (just like with mousemommy) will you be as happy at POR or are you just looking to save money?
TRUST ME, I understand (hence why I have this SoG rez) but I also know deep down, I would be happier at WL and that I can't guarantee I can swing this rate again in the future but SoG will be there. You and MM have to decide if giving up GF is worth it, especially if you can't secure such a trip in the future.

Not to sound too Disney-corny but follow your heart - as much as it's great to save money even DH admits it's worth it to spend a little more if it adds to the trip v. 'making it work'! :thumbsup2

:grouphug: for everyone with the RC bug!!! Keep us posted on your choice!

Definitely no split stay...it's only 4 nights, 4 days in the parks...one of the reasons why I'm considering POR since we won't really have time to enjoy the resort much or even the convenience of it since we'll most likely be in the parks all day each day (except maybe one of the MK days)...

It would save us $400-$600 if my math is correct...(depends on late summer discounts)

I can definitely understand your conundrum. One of the reasons DH is pushing for WL this trip is because we have 7 nights but we have 4 park days/1 party night so we figure there will be a lot of resort time, especially with the LO needing a midday break.

In your situation, I can see stepping down to the moderate... especially if you plan on being park heavy. You could always put that extra $ into the savings for next trip... and maybe save GF for a longer stay.

*HUGS* whichever way you go!!!

koh, did the GF ressie price include tix and dining too?

We had a POR pref room in August (bldg 14) one building away from 18. Loved the location, beautiful resort. It's a tough one, as I know you said it is a great rate for GF. If you really plan on being park heavy, by staying at the moderate those savings could fund the next trip, as dimndgal1 said. :goodvibes

Why don't you wait until the summer discounts are released? (do you have time before needing to cancel with the travel agency?). That way you'll know how much you could be potentally saving and that will decide it for you. :)

Yes, I can wait. :-) I certainly don't want to cancel GF until I know for certain I want to change. On one hand, the great rate at GF was how I talked DH into doing Disney this summer. On the other hand, it would be more budget friendly if we switched. The GF doesn't include dining, so that's all OOP, which is ok, but yeah...factoring in the extra cash for food, it'd save us at least almost $400. Closer to $600 with a 25% room discount like they have for the first half of summer.

OR, only save $200 and get an extra night and a day (so we can hit AK which we were going to skip)...hmmm...

Hey all!!! For some reason I couldn't log on from work.

As for GF vs. AKL, I'm over it. I'm always excited about saving money, but when it comes to Disney trips, I never go with the cheapest option. :rolleyes2

We are sticking with GF, and we will just have to buy the 10 day hoppers and upgrade them when we get there instead of buying the AP's right now. :goodvibes

Dmndgal I just have to tell you every time I look at your picture under your dis name I just smile. :) she is soooo adorable.

The double-edged sword of us RCers!

So very true

Make sure to fit time in to 'freak out when something goes wrong'! We had that issue when we used to commando tour... almost missed our Backstage Magic Tour because I hadn't taken into account the EPCOT kennel would be closed and we had to hoof it to AK to drop our pup off. (that was before central kennels) Taught me a little flexibility takes you far!

We are making very loose plans. What park we're going to on what day, and one ADR per day. Our other meal (which will be a CS), and what ride we ride when will all be by ear. We have our list of "must do's" and that will be our main focus.

*HUGS* I hope you get to go! Yellowstone and the Tetons are ah-MAZ-ing! Let me know if you need any advice; DH's family is from that area so we frequent the mountains a lot.

Thank you. My hubby was talking about it last night and it seems like even if his parents don't go, he wants us to go.

I would love to see an Opening Ceremony but I just hesitate to think how much busier Tokyo will be - DH already said the trains are packed... throw an extra million tourists and ! I wish I could've made Vancouver!!! And I can only imagine how much of a party Rio will be!!!

As much as I would love to go to one, I'm not sure I could handle it. I'm not big on crowds. Heck being in a Wal Mart on Black Friday is crowd enough for me to have a mild panic attack. It might be better for me to visit Tokyo without the addition of Olympic crowds.

You could always do what I do: highest room category during highest season for a value... that's $230! Great baseline to wiggle from

I think I'm done pricing for a little while. The DH is really working my nerves about it. If I don't do something he wants me to, or if he wants to get me to do something he'll say something like "oh really, and I thought someone wanted to upgrade their Disney resort." Like tonight he wanted me to make cookies. When I said no he said "Oh really, you won't make cookies? And I thought you wanted to upgrade your Disney resort." It's kind of taking the joy out of pricing different resort/room category combos for the trip.

Wookie, agree with dimndgal1, an hour and a half should be okay. Weekday early AM flights can be very busy, both with business and vacation travelers, and you are traveling at a busy time with Labor Day weekend ahead. If DH doesn't mind getting up early I'd go with getting to the airport that morning (traffic will be very light at 4:30 am (is that hour drive factoring in traffic?) and you won't have an extra hotel charge). My DH leaves very early every day so when I do have an early flight he doesn't mind. Why don't you leave the option up to DH? And he can certainly stay at the hotel with you.

Getting to get the hubby up to take me to the airport is the main reason I am thinking of getting a room in airport the night before the flight. He doesn't do well with waking up early. Getting up early for him on a work day is 8 AM.

Sorry Wookie, hope you won't have to cancel. :flower3: (and I hope your migraine is gone )

Thank you, I hope we don't. The DH really wants to go, so even if the inlaws don't go, we'll go.

The migraine is better today. It's not totally gone, but better. It maybe that it is gone, and my head is just sore from being in pain for so long, if that makes sense.

There are several events that I would love to go to. I just need to get the hubby on board. Although, he did say he would be more willing to go to the Summer Olympics. The DH and our oldest would both love to go to the Olympics in Rio. I have a friend that lives in Brazil, that has even offered to come and stay with us the whole time since we don't speak Portuguese.

I kind of like the idea of saving money and getting an extra day at Disney... but that's just me. I guess it comes down to an extra day = more time to enjoy = more relaxed pace. :cool2: DH didn't get why I had a resort day on our last trip until we did it... was such a great time that he loves having a day and a half of 'nothing' on our next trip so we can decide to do a WP or just be lazy at the resort. Being able to do AK when you might not otherwise sounds fun, not to mention giving you a chill evening to do whatever!

But, I agree holding onto the rezzie until you're sure! :)

Honestly, AKL seemed like a 'wow, we'd save so much' vs. a 'man, I really would prefer that' situation for you so I can understand your choice!!! We'll see what the next whim bring! :cheer2:

Dmndgal I just have to tell you every time I look at your picture under your dis name I just smile. :) she is soooo adorable.

I agree!!! :thumbsup2

:blush::blush: awwww, thank you so much!!!:blush::blush:

It's from our DL trip when older DD was 3. She loved the outdoor teacups and would just throw her head back and lauuuuugh! That photo (and the experience) is one reason DH started to 'get' why I was so into Disney. :goodvibes

Glad it can make others smile! (it's my fave pic of my precocious one!)

*nods* this is my biggest worry about FP+... I like to have one ADR and matching park planned a day; that way my other half of the day is loose and easy. I'm still not sold on the idea of picking my rides 2 months out...

I KNOW!!! Advance trip to Tokyo (to get your bearings), and of course DL... then follow-up trip for some Curling action! :thumbsup2 ;)

I hate when they try to pull stuff like that! Luckily, I got my ace in the hole when DH went hunting with his dad this fall; it had been 10 years and this was the first time he was 'free'... but he felt guilty about leaving me with our littlest one. So, I asked his mom to come out (since we would be elk widows) and he got to hunt. He never asked why I was so understanding... until he got home and he saw me perusing the resort pages. :upsidedow

THIS! Very much THIS! I feel like I should print this out to keep reminding myself!!! Sometimes the price difference in the resort makes up for itself in spades in other ways! DH was leery about spending more on YC until we did it - SAB, location, and overall luxury of the resort were worth it to him. Still can't convince him that CR is worth it on this trip (and not 100% sure I'm on board) but at least he never batted an eye when I went straight to deluxe!

--------------------------------------------------------

Just got back from Wal*Mart where things are getting CRAZYYYY!!! They are calling for some monster snow this week which means we'll be buried or get rain (the joy of Maryland!). I had done my big shop over the weekend but Amazon sent me an email Sunday saying my formula was out of stock so back out I had to go.

SOOO over winter and ready for some warmer weather! My girls keep exchanging this almost cold and I think it's just from close quarters but it would be great to go out and get sun without risking frostbite!

On another note: WHERE IS SEPTEMBER????? I need the calendar so I can plan my ADRs and MNSSHP!

:grouphug: and :coffee: for all!

Hi guys! :worried: I am feeling particularly overwhelmed with work today :duck: and wanted to stop by really quickly to try to channel a little :donald: DIS spirit. I tell ya, the closer to menopause I get, the harder it is to "task" (much less "multi-task"! :rotfl:) It seems to take me forever to do anything. But no complaints about the actual work because the busier we are, the more WDW trips we take. ::yes::

I can't wait to catch up with y'all.:surfweb: And JanetB, I'm thinking of you and mom.

DS loves Kali Rapids as well...and I would love to finally see the Lion King show...AND, that would mean we could hit up Epcot for a pre-opening breakfast at Akershus, then line up for Elsa and Anna right after, hit up some rides with FP+, and call it an early night (maybe some pool time at the resort before an early ME the next morning). It's definitely sounding better and better... :-). I think my biggest concern is transportation...we love the convenience of the Poly, so switching to a bus only resort worries me a bit...anybody at POR during the summer that can put my mind at ease?

It sounds like you've got a good plan!
We did POR for the first part of our split-stay in late June '12 (I think dates were 24-30th) and had no problems with transportation. Busses ran pretty regularly and we made the one for a pre-opening CRT like a breeze! Also, one night we were coming back from HS and caught the end of the Fantasmic rush... we actually caught the bus to Downtown Disney and then road the boat back from DD to POR - most people going to DD that late plan to party so it worked well!

I was also impressed with how central POR felt in terms of the resort. We had stayed SOG before and the rides to AK and HS felt LOOOOONG, but all the rides to/from POR were pretty even. Also, we found the busses to run better to POR than to YC when we moved over there for the second half of the trip.

HTH!!!

------------------------------------------------------

Now pondering maybe doing a split-stay between CR and WL...
Thinking of staying CR-MK view 4 nights, then moving to WL the morning after MNSSHP for 3 nights.

Also looking wistfully to YC...... AHHHHH!

Just back and have a lot of reading to do but here is a quick synopsis of our trip:

FWC - loved the space in the cabin and beds were super comfy but hated that grounds are so big and you have to use the internal buses to get around :-( I expected to love this place and I'm not sure we will return. Although I still say that trails end is the best breakfast value on property.

Disney Magic - holy cow. I thought we'd love it but I underestimated how much. Best trip EVER. We all absolutely adore DCL.

CR - I thought this might be a one night and done resort for us. But we all felt our jaws drop when we walked in. The room was GORGEOUS. My oldest said it was her favorite as far as rooms go. I'd have to agree. I also love the location.

Ok - more later.... Gotta do laundry!

Candace: you gave me a chuckle with the I'm over it comment!:rotfl2:

Janet: I hope mom is ok, hugs!

Dmndgal: hope you don't get a huge snowstorm, and I hear you on the cooped up thing. Same here, and so looking forward to some Florida sunshine.:worship:

Linda: how are you? Is the back pain still around? I hope you are back to yourself.::yes::

Lacey: oooh looking forward to hearing more about your trip....the magic and the contemporary!:hyper:

Magic : sorry work is hectic, I hear that! Hugs!

Koh: I can't keep up with your plans!lol

Waving hi to all! More car troubLe today, bummed about that. But finally worked up some gumption and told my parents about our trip! Yay for me! But I still haven't exactly found my big girl panties...didn't tell them about the second cruise yet. Lol:blush:
