So, for quite a long time now, since finding the DIS after my last trip in 2006, reading everyone’s wonderful trip reports to get me through the days that I wasn’t in Disney World and re-living the magic through them, I’ve wanted to have my own trip to report on to share my magic and help others relive theirs. Now I do, and I can’t believe my trip is over. Furthermore I have no idea where to start with this because I’m not a writer. I guess I’ll go with a little history and build from there to give this report a little depth (or something like that).

I’ve been a Disneyholic since the age of 3, when my Father first took me for my first trip. The story I’ve been told many times goes a little like this… My Dad was trying desperately, as a single parent, to get a photo of me with Mickey in the Magic Kingdom. Every time he’d get me close enough to move back and take a photo someone would jump in and ruin the shot for him. He happened to notice that Mickey was standing in front of a low wall, which he promptly ran me around to, and sat me down on. Quickly, he ran back in front of Mickey and yelled “Hey Mickey, look behind you!” and Mickey turned and played with me for a full minute or so, giving my Dad the chance to snap many wonderful photos.

A couple of months later, I was at the mall with my Grandmother, and there was a parade that Mickey was leading. Apparently I was awestruck, and frantically asking my Grandmother if she thought Mickey would remember me. As luck, or fate, or sheer coincidence would have it, Mickey walked right up to me out of all the kids standing there and patted me on the head, and kept right on going. I’m told I was ecstatic. “He remembered me!!! Mickey remembered me!!!” was all I said for the rest of the day. Apparently, that stuck with me, because now, through about 18 or so trips to the world and 30 years since that possibly fateful day I’m still in love with Disney World, and can absolutely still feel the magic it brings to so many.

I had always dreamed of honeymooning in Disney, I mean, to me, there is nowhere else. So, when the time came to present the idea to my then fiancée now DW, and she wasn’t 100% thrilled with it, I was heartbroken. She had agreed to do it, since she knew how badly I wanted to, but I could tell her heart wasn’t in it, and I didn’t want to drag her off unwillingly and ruin our honeymoon, even though I knew that the case would surely be the opposite.

DW had only been to Disney World once, at the age of 9, about 20 or so years ago. For three days. Off property at some place with a “free continental breakfast” as she later recalled to me. It wasn’t a dream trip, and her memories of it lean toward it being very hectic, and tiring, and something about a beautiful castle… All theme park, rides, and giant Mice running around, no romance.

I knew in my heart that it could be a wonderful place for a honeymoon, filled with romantic meals, walks on the beach and through the torch lit grounds of the Polynesian, afternoon and late night drinks at the volcano pool, sitting on our balcony (if my request for a 3rd floor room was granted) or on the beach and watching Wishes, seeing Illuminations from the Rose & Crown deck (if only we can get a table out there…), strolls through World Showcase at night and lying in bed staring out over the Seven Seas Lagoon at Cinderella’s Castle.
So, after she realized how badly I wanted this, how much I really believed that she would love it, a little promising her that she would indeed have plenty of romance and a great time, a few well placed photos of the Poly, and a final promise that I was acting with the honeymoon in mind and not just my addiction, she agreed with a little more enthusiasm do it! I was on the phone with the World, credit card in hand, speaking to a cast member who was thrilled to help me book my dream honeymoon in moments.

Hello, I’d like to book my honeymoon for September of next year… Seven days, six nights, Polynesian, club level, lagoon view, deluxe dining, park hoppers, and could I please request a 3rd floor room? I know you can’t guarantee it, but it IS for a honeymoon, and we’d really love to have that balcony, so if you could just please note that, I really won’t ask for anything more… Did I mention this is my honeymoon?

To keep the excitement going for a year and a half we planned the wedding. I bought her all the guide books for the World: Birnbaum’s, The Unofficial, The Complete, Passporter’s… even a little pocket guide, to help build the anticipation and help her find things she wanted to do so the trip included her as well, instead of me just grabbing her arm and running her from place to place.

Before I knew it, we were 180 Days out and it was time to book the ADR’s:

Let’s see we’ll do The Yachtsman Steakhouse for our first night in the world and then take a boat ride to World Showcase for Illuminations. That will be a perfect first night…

Then we’ll do The Hoop-Dee-Doo Review because you just have to.

There’s a great view and some great sushi at the California Grill, book that please, late so we can see Wishes from the observation deck!!!

Hmm… DW loves old school Hollywood… Brown Derby Fantasmic Package please!

A table on the deck at the Rose & Crown for Illuminations overshadows the fact that the food isn’t wonderful, maybe if we check in early, and flash our honeymoon buttons… let’s book that one too!

Aaaaand… Narcosse’s because DW has become enamored with the Grand Floridian and loves seafood!! This is wonderful!!

Finally, let me have a Chef Mickey’s Character Breakfast, because we have to be photographed with the mouse, and the last day has always been a breakfast at Chef Mickey’s for me since back in the day when it was in the Disney Marketplace and a bus ride away.

The remaining days were a blur filled with wedding planning: Book the church, meet with the priest, go to Pre-Caana, invitations, flowers, ring shopping, centerpiece design, book the hall, make a seating chart, try and wrangle 5 guys together at the same time to get tuxedos fitted, pick the cake, pick the food, book the limo, buy the Mickey and Minnie cake topper and Mickey & Minnie toasting flutes, rehearsal, rehearsal dinner… WEDDING!!!!

Here's a couple photos of the beautiful cake that I don't remember through the blur that was our wedding:

There’s nothing like planning and executing a wedding to make the long days before a trip to Disney fly by (I’m not glossing over the wedding or its importance and how much it meant to me, but this is a trip report, not a wedding report, so I’m trying to stay on point…) and it was a beautiful. The wedding and reception were a HUGE success and went off with only a few minor snafus (every wedding has its problems I’m sure…) I now have a beautiful wife, whom I treasure and adore like no other, and we’re about to start our lives as husband and wife in the happiest place on earth!

But first, we have to make it through the night before.
1:00 AM get to the hotel
1:30 all the tuxes are in the best man’s possession and the wedding dress is safely at her Mother’s
2:00… OMG, we have to be at the airport in 4 hours… we should really try and rest
3:00, I can’t sleep, please 5:30, just get here so we can go!!!!

Day 1 - Full of Pixie Dust

Great start! I love to read about Disneymoon's. It makes me want to get married all over again. I love the cake photos. I really hope your DW ended up having a great time. Do tell more!

Subscribing, since I'll be having my HM at disney this time next year! (and like you, DF at the moment is agreeing to go, but not quite as psyched as I am).

Coming along for the ride. We had our DisneyMoon last October...brings back memories for me! :lovestruc

Since I also honeymooned at WDW this summer, I'm along for the ride. :) Can't wait for the day 1 update!

Congrats!! Cant wait to hear more and see more pictures!

So, finally, 5:30 rolls around, and I’m up out of bed like a 5 year old on Christmas morning (or a 32 year old on Disney day, hehe) and wake up the wife, who also enthusiastically jumps out of bed. Off to the airport we go.

We checked our bags, and cleared security in plenty of time to find our gate, eat some horrendous breakfast pizza, and sit there staring at our watches until boarding. Once on the plane, we both fall asleep and before we know it, arrive in Orlando! It’s amazing, the difference between Orlando International and Philadelphia International… it’s absolutely astounding, bright lights, clear signs, cleanliness everywhere you look. As we were coming off the escalator to baggage claim our town car driver met us, helped us with our bags, which were magically already on the belt, and into the town car we went.

The ride from the airport to the Polynesian must go through several time warps and twists to end up feeling as long as it does. Especially when compared to the ride from the Poly back to the airport, which takes about 2 minutes. After what felt like three days later, we finally passed under the Walt Disney World arch, enter the property, and I promptly began to lose my mind. OMG!! We’re Here!! Just a few more minutes now and we’ll be at the hotel!!! Look honey… there’s a bus!! …and LOOK A MONORAIL!!!! YAAAAY!! (I think I actually did the whole, Kermit "arm flail" thing too...)

DW is still ho-hum about it, looking at me like I’m insane. I think she underestimated how much of a geek I am for Disney World. “Of course I’m excited honey, but seriously, I don’t think anyone can reach YOUR level of excitement…”

Finally, we arrive at the Polynesian, and go through the gate. DW’s eyes actually do a little bugging out, because no amount of photographs in the world can do the beauty of the Poly justice. I see a little twinkle there, and she hasn’t seen a thing yet!

We’re greeted with an Aloha and our leis, and told that sadly our room isn’t ready yet (no biggie, we are 4 hours early for check-in, and I’m still hoping for that balcony, so we’ll wait) but if we’d just hop on the cart, that we’ll be taken back to the Hawaii building and allowed to check in, get our Keys to the World and get comfy in the lounge.

Our guide/driver found out that it was DW’s first time at the Poly and gave us the grand driving tour, over to the point to see the view of the castle and the beach, past the quiet pool, around the volcano, over to Luau Cove, and then back to Hawaii. That was so nice of him!

We finish checking in, receive our “Just Married” buttons, and head upstairs to the lounge for some Lilikoi juice and a chocolate chip cookie! We’re both starving so I suggest breakfast at the Kona so that DW can finally taste the Tonga Toast she’s been having dreams of since I described it to her and showed her SeaSpray’s pictures months ago. We take a slow walk past the pool over to the GCH and enter. As soon as we get inside the smell of the GCH overwhelms me and I get a little emotional. There’s nothing in the world like that smell, and to me it smells like home.

Up the stairs to the Kona we go. We get seated immediately, congratulated heavily, and much to DW’s chagrin, are handed lunch menus (it’s about noon exactly). When our waitress came back to take our order, I ordered the Angus Burger, and we asked very politely if there was any way DW could still possibly get Tonga Toast. The waitress said she’d see and disappeared, a runner brought over our drinks, and we waited. Our waitress finally came back with my burger and a nice big ‘ol piece of Tonga Toast for DW. Our first dose of pixie dust!! I think it made her day. She loved it.

When the meal was finished we were brought over a Congratulatory dessert plate featuring Lilo and Stitch and two very delicious cream puffs covered in Mickey-head candy pieces, and our picture was taken. More pixie dust!! So soon! They really do go out of their way to make sure you’re having fun!

After our very joyful brunch, we took another slow walk over to see if the room was ready yet. It wasn’t. DW ended up falling asleep on the couch in the lounge and I walked outside to take some photographs and kill the time.

Our room was finished up a little after 3:00 and we were given the number and headed up to 3503!!! We got the balcony!! …and a towel Mickey head on the bed!

I found myself hoping we didn’t run ourselves out of pixie dust by the end of the first day! I brought DW over to the curtains and said “Take a look at this,” as I drew them all the way back. She was speechless as we stepped out onto the balcony to take in what would be our splendid view for the week.

While we admired, a knock on the door signified that our bags were brought up, and finally… I took a nap, on a bed, at the Poly!! We got showered and dressed, and headed out into the sudden rain storm that blew through for our dinner at the Yachtsman Steakhouse. Fortunately the heavy stuff let up and it was just a drizzle for our walk to the GCH for our first monorail ride to the Magic Kingdom and from the MK monorail to hook up with a bus to the Yacht Club.

The Yachtsman won her heart immediately as well, we started off with a Pina Colada for her and a huge Amber Bock for me while we waited. I had the Prime Rib and sadly I don’t remember what she had. We didn’t take photos for some reason. For dessert I had the excellent Taste of Valrhona chocolates, and she had the Artisan Cheese platter which was she loved so much it made her want to try new things all week! To finish it all off, more pixie dust was in order as they brought us out a small congratulatory plate with chocolates.

After dinner we made our way over to the boat launch for a beautiful ride at dusk over to the World Showcase to take in Illuminations. The ride outside on the back of the Friendship launch was beautiful, with the sun going down and the lights from the Yacht & Beach Club and Boardwalk coming up and reflecting on the water. I had never been through the international gateway before, and I must say that at night, it is simply amazing to behold. DW tells me that she's so glad that we took this trip.

We made our way over to Italy and found that the place usually (in my experience anyway) roped off for VIP viewers (over the “canal” bridge by the gondola) was wide open (more magic, really?!?) and watched Illuminations right up close. Every time the show get’s to the “We Go On” part I get emotional, and this night was no different and I teared up as if on cue. It was beautiful, and being located where we were, it was like being in the middle of the show, with the bursts from the fireworks feeling close enough to touch. It was a simply breathtaking experience. Someday, I’ll learn how to take proper pictures of fireworks.

Finally, we made our way around the showcase, enjoying the quiet, empty park and the romantic stroll through the deserted countries, over through future world and up to an almost empty monorail for the ride back to the TTC and the walk back to the Polynesian.

As we were on the monorail, nearing the TTC, we could hear and see what we thought to be Wishes over the castle. On the walk back to the Poly we were near crowded off the path by people leaving the show.

Then, as we neared our room, we noticed people still on the beach and got to wondering why they were there, thinking it was too late for the Electrical Water Pageant. We wandered over and got to take in a full SECOND showing of Wishes (or so we believe) to end our first, perfect day in paradise.

Next Up: Day 2, Into the Magic Kingdom (and the Dream Team really does exist!)
