Our First Magical Poly Vacation: April 14-21 2012!

Great update! Where did you get your daughters autograph book with the picture of Rapunzel on it? Also,i read that when seeing Rapunzel in the morning the lighting is bad with shadows? Did you notice that in your pictures?

Her autograph book is actually a standard book they sell at the parks. Before our trip, i bought a bunch of stickers of Disney princesses and she and I decorated each page for a specific princess using the stickers. Was a fun pre-trip activity.

Yes, the shadows were distracting, although I didnt notice them during the meet and greet, but only later when looking at the pics. You can sort of see the mottled shadowing in the pic I posted. It's the shadow of the trees from the planter where all the strollers were parked.

Lookin like a great MK day :) Sounds like a really nice interaction with Rapunzle :) So glad you were able to secure a good spot and didn't have to wait too too long to get in there.

Great day at MK! I love your description of the dash to meet Rapunzel! I can so picture it! :goodvibes

I love Boma also. And I'm with you on the Zebra Domes. I'd heard so much about them and then when I tried one, I had to scratch my head. I couldn't figure out what all the fuss was about. One bite was enough. Very disappointing after all the built-up expectations!

Wow you got alot accomplished those last 45 mins of AK! I'm impressed :)

Boma looks and sounds so good. Can't wait to try that next month. I'm glad to hear the Zebra Domes weren't wonderful...I booked a 4 pm ADR at Boma then the Wishes Dessert party that night. Glad to hear we might still have room for the desserts at the fireworks party :) I tried to make the ressies far enough apart that we will be hungry again at 9. I guess we'll see ;)

Glad you got to experience the fireworks from the beach. We only watched them once from inside the park, and it was amazing, but I think I preferred it from the Poly. The first 3 nights we watched it from the smaller beach in front of Tokelau, but then we discovered that they piped the music into the other beach. It was still great without the music, but it just gives it that added bonus to hear the sounds as well. We aren't staying Poly again this summer, but I plan on watching them from the beach at least one night. Maybe after our Kona dinner :cloud9:

Looks like your MK day is starting off great popcorn::

Yes, it was definitely worth the long run once I saw all of the people standing behind us. I've been reading the past week that there are rumors they will be moving Rapunzel to the Town Square Theater with the rest of the FP princesses which I think they should have done a looooooong time ago!

Great day at MK! I love your description of the dash to meet Rapunzel! I can so picture it! :goodvibes

I still chuckle about it when I think back. I almost wish someone had snapped a picture of us darting down Main Street. I'm sure it would have looked hilarious especially since DD was in her Rapunzel outfit. :lmao:

Awww, no I bet it was cute!!!

I didn't realize there was such a hype surrounding the zebra domes until I got back from my trip so it wasn't as disappointing for us but I'm with ya in that I'm one of those who wasn't all that impressed with it.

I think you should be fine with a 5 hour gap between your Boma and Wishes ADRs even if you do indulge yourselves with dessert at Boma. Sounds like a fun plan!

Friday, April 20th Part II - MK and 1900 Park Fare

We left Rapunzel at 9:35am. DW called again and said they just finished HM. I asked her to meet us in front of Jungle Cruise. I got there first with the kids, and let them loose to play on those remote controlled boats with the giant wheel to steer them. They were enjoying themselves and a Photopass photographer who was hunting for pics to for the Magic Memories and You took a series a pictures of the two. Finally when we met up with DW and DFIL, we went on the ride. The kids liked it. I love this ride mostly because of the corny jokes. Always feel like they should have a drum set up front on the boat for each punch line. And of course, we got to see the BACK. SIDE. OF. WATER! Always the highlight of this ride.

IMG_2194.jpg

Next stop was going to be PoTC and DD was actually willing to try it with some reluctance. But once again, the ride was closed temporarily. So we never got to try that one during this trip. DW, DFIL, and the kids went on the Magic Carpet ride again, and I stayed behind to snap some pics of them.

IMG_2202.jpg

Then we headed to FL to use our PP FPs. The kids of course loved the ride again. And they wanted to go on it again afterwards, so we pulled more FPs. Then it was a Small World again – much shorter line than the previous day. We also did the carousel and the Tea Cups, and then it was time for Peter Pan FPs again. It was a bit passed noon by that time and we had to start making plans for DFIL. His DME was suppose to leave at 1:45pm and we hadn’t eaten lunch yet. DD was asking about going to the pool again. So we decided to call an audible and call it a day for our park touring since they were forecasting severe thunderstorm activity in the afternoon anyway. So, for the first time during this trip, we were headed out of a Park at 12:30pm!! I thought it was silly at that point for DFIL to have to get on a bus 3 hours early before his flight when he could spend some extra time with his grandkids and have some lunch with us. So I offered to drive him to the airport myself, and that way he won’t have to leave so early AND he could just check his luggage at the airport. We ordered some Private Dining again – a lot of repeat items from our Kona order when we were at the Cabana. And at 2:30pm, DFIL said goodbye to the kids and DW, and we started our drive towards the airport. DD was sad but we were planning on seeing him again in just a few weeks at a family wedding. While I was gone, DW took the kids to the pool which turned out to be a very short-lived venture.

Always a bitter-sweet moment when you’re taking a family member to the airport after spending so much time together. I was very happy that DFIL was able to join us and enjoyed watching his first-time reactions to everything at Disney. It was also very nice to have a third adult around to help out with the kids. The kids absolutely loved having Grandpa around and it looked like he had a very good time especially this having been his first trip to Disney. DFIL got on his fight with just a 20 minute delay due to the weather I’m about to tell you about, and arrived at his home in Columbus without any problems.

As we were arriving at the airport, we could see very dark clouds with lightning interspersed out to the West about where Disney would be. When I was heading back to the Poly after dropping off DFIL, it became very apparent that the storm was right on top of Disney. Raindrops in Florida always feel thicker and bigger to me than what we’re used to getting up here in the DC area. By the time I pulled into the Poly parking lot, it was pouring like crazy with decent gusts here and there. There was no way in heck I was going to leave the minivan and run to our longhouse in this one. So, texted DW saying I’m back but stuck in the car because of the rain. It turned out that the kids were in the pool only for about 10-15 minutes before they closed it due to approaching storms. The kids were so disappointed but they managed to put that behind them and were playing with their toys in our room. This is what the skies looked like for them as they were headed back to our room.

I was in the minivan for a good 25 minutes before it started letting up. Fortunately, I had my trusty ol iPad to keep me company. When I later asked DS if he got to enjoy the short stay at the pool, he told me that they had to leave because people were “worried that Lightning (as in Mcqueen) would come crashing into the pool”. That made me laugh so hard – he heard lightning and naturally he thought about the car and not the weather. And why not? We’re at Disney, right?

Once I made it back to the room we lounged around a bit, before heading over to the GCH to do some souvenir shopping. Then it was on to the Grand Floridian for our 1900 Park Fare Dinner ADR. We briefly toured around the central atrium area at GF. Not sure how I feel about this resort yet. It looks nice and I’m sure the rooms are great. Walking around in the lobby though, it felt like I was strolling through a shopping mall. We were seated after we checked in at 1900 PF. This would be the first time all of us would be meeting Lady Tremaine and her daughters Anastasia and Drizella as well as Prince Charming. The seating and tabled areas had somewhat of an unusual layout. The two French doors they were using as the entry way didn’t really feel like an entry point. Felt very crowded trying to weave our way between tables and to get to our table. The food was average I would say. Like I mentioned before, we didn’t have a bad meal at Disney. But there were a couple of places where the food was just average and this was one of them. The character interactions more then made up for it. Prince Charming was first who was proper and formal as ever with his demeanor and speech.

IMG_2208_edited.jpg

DD was absolutely smitten when she was talking to him. We thanked him for his hospitality this morning when we had breakfast at “his beautiful castle” and that we missed seeing him then as we were told he was out riding for the morning. Charming took off with that for a minute and thanked us for coming. Cinderella came by next - Yup, DD was meeting Cindy for the second time in a single day, and third time for the whole trip! Next-up, Lady Tremaine. She was actually polite in a stern way. We said our hellos and told her that DD had been looking forward to meeting her daughters. She thanked us, then glanced over to DS who had been sitting on my lap, and then asked “So, What’s his story?”. Without missing a beat, I replied “Oh, He’s available!”. Lady Tremaine said “I knew it! I’m going to have to let my daughters know”. It was pretty funny. Then as she was leaving, Charming was passing by and she commented what a beautiful princess DD was.

With Anastasia and Drizella remaining, DD was getting very excited. She kept telling us all day how she loves them because they are “so funny, especially when they start pushing and screaming at each other!” Anastasia was first and with just a little coaching, DD told her that she was her favorite princess. Anastasia let out a squeal and thanked her and said that even though she’s not a princess yet, she had dreams of becoming one some day.

IMG_2216_edited.jpg

She gave DD a big hug and while still half hugging her, asked why she was her favorite “princess”. DD told her it was because she was funny. Anastasia then proceeded to tell her two jokes and DD just ate it up. It was very cute. After Anastasia left, while we were finishing our desserts, Drizella paid us a visit by plopping herself down on an empty chair at our table acting all tired.

IMG_2224_edited.jpg

She said hello to us. DD then asked her if she “liked Cinderella”. Drizella’s answer? “Well, yes, at least we are suppose to like her”. Pretty funny. Then DD asked Drizella if she would like to marry her brother. Drizella said that would require a big ring with ruby diamonds on it and went on and on in great detail of what the rest of the ring should look like.

After a fun time at 1900 PF, we went back to our room to start packing. The kids went to bed at 9:00pm. DW and I finished packing a little bit later. The thought of making one last solo hop over to MK crossed my mind but it was still drizzling outside with more heavy rain to come overnight so I decided it wasn’t going to be worth it. And thanks to the miserable weather forecast, we were not exactly sure what our plans were going to be for our last day in Disney.

Next Up: Staying ahead of the storm!

Wow, that storm picture makes the GF look so incredibly white! I mean...its gorgeous anyway, but with a big black cloud overhead it looks like a gleaming palace :lmao:

You're right! :lmao: It looks like it's almost glowing! The picture is such a contrast to the sunrise pictures I took with the GF in the background earlier in the week.

Saturday, April 21st Part I - Last Day

This was the day I tried not think too much about. It was our last day. We had a flight departing MCO at 7:00pm. My mind had been desperately trying to conveniently ignore the fact that our vacation was finally coming to end. Prior to the trip, I had set out this day to be an Animal Kingdom day. We enjoyed the park so much last year, that DW and I both thought we would like to have two days to see the park. Except, we pretty much did everything we wanted to do at AK two days prior. So when we went to bed the night before, DW agreed that we would not be going to back to AK and most likely we’ll be lounging away at the resort since it was forecasted to rain all day starting around 8 or 9 in the morning.

Of course, when you have young kids, there is no such thing as sleeping in, even on vacation. DS woke up at 6am just like he always does, and DD at 6:30am. I pulled out my iPad to check the weather – the forecast changed a bit. It was still going to rain, but the start of it was now pushed back to 12pm! I asked my family if we should go to MK one more time in the morning and got a resounding yes. And since we were up so early anyway, I wanted to make rope drop at 9am. So we were ready and packed, and ready to check out of our room at 8am. We said goodbye to the room that treated us well for the most part. (Had some issues with the mini-fridge and a hairdryer was missing when we first checked in). We said goodbye to the three ducks that always seemed to be hanging around outside our patio and as soon as they heard the sliding doors open, would waddle their way towards us expecting food that never came! We loaded up our minivan with our luggage, and drove to the GCH, unloaded the luggage in front of the airline counter, and I sent DW and the kids in to Captain Cook’s to eat some breakfast while I checked in the luggage. I even had time to look for any ADR openings at Crystal Palace for lunch, found a 1pm ADR, and booked it on my iPad! After going through all of this, we made it through the turnstiles just as the opening ceremony was starting.

We positioned ourselves on the left side of the station, and as soon as the rope dropped, we were headed towards Storybook Circus. Once we got there, it was evident that the weather forecast had kept the crowds away.

Cloudy but no sign of rain.
IMG_2265_edited.jpg

Compared to our first day at MK which was suppose to have lower crowd levels, the number of people at Storybook Circus was minimal. We walked on Dumbo twice back to back with no waits – this is the same ride that we had to wait 15 minutes at rope drop on our first day! Then, DD said she really wanted to go on Barnstormer. So, while DS and I got back in line on Dumbo, she went off to Barnstormer with DW. She rode it 6 times in a row!!!

IMG_2240_edited.jpg

The first 4 was with DW. In fact, at the end of her third ride, they didn’t even have to get off since there was no one waiting in line to come aboard, the CM let them stay put in their seats and ride again! While I took DD on her 5th and 6th ride of Barnstormer, DW took DS to go on the Tomorrowland Speedway. DD absolutely loved the Barnstormer which made me think that she will be ready for all of the thrill rides the next time we come back. She was squealing, laughing, and having a blast! We left Storybook Circus at 9:40am. During that first 40 minutes, the kids accumulated three Dumbo and six Barnstormer rides! I was already feeling good about the choice of coming to MK that morning.

DS and DW were finishing up their Speedway ride when DD and I caught up to them. DS was once again perfectly content having DW do all the driving while he enjoyed the scenery from the passenger seats. When they exited the ride, I took both kids to ride on the Tea Cups while DW went over to PP to pull FPs. I don’t care how empty MK is, there’s always going to be a sizeable wait at PP. We went on the Tea Cups twice in a row with no wait. The three of us were spinning our cup fast, changing directions every 10 seconds on DD’s queue. It was hilarious although I felt a little woozy afterwards. DW after pulling the PP FPs, decided to hop in line for Snow White’s Adventure by herself. She really wanted to try that ride as she couldn’t remember what it was like. I hadn’t tried going on it because I KNEW DD would have issues with it as it has more of a darker edge to it than most of the other rides. I’m glad DW got to try it since it would be closing in about a month. She liked it but agreed that it was a good idea that we didn’t take DD on it.

After the Tea Cups and while waiting for DW to finish the Snow White ride, I took the kids into the interactive queue for Winnie the Pooh. DD adores this play area. The standby line was so short, that I didn’t have to worry about holding our spot in the line while the kids were playing.

IMG_2250_edited.jpg

IMG_2251_edited.jpg

I joined them. They banged on the drums, spinned some wheels. And then there’s that rope you’re suppose to pull to get the gopher out of his hole. I don’t know how many of you have tried this, but it is HARD! Even after putting my entire weight pulling it, it took quite the effort to see the gopher. DW showed up just in time as the standby line was getting longer. We got in and 5 minutes later was on the ride for the last time. Afterwards, we went on the carousel and then on to PP. Still a big hit for the kids and the chant “Again” followed so we pulled another set of FPs as we exited.

Next up: Wrapping up our vacation.

Looks like a terrific decision to spend the day at MK! I think I love that Pooh playground as much as my son does! :)

We also cannot wait for the Casey Jr to be open (well, I know it's open now, but to be open while we're there!).

I'm with you on Casey Jr - Looks like you and your family just missed its opening!

Hahaha, I loved the interactions with Anastasia and Drizella. Your kids ask GREAT questions!!!
My dd was always to shy to talk to them and just wanted the autograph, quick snap and to be away from them so we never really had any memorable character moments. Guess that's why we don't bother with it.

Sorry about the rain and having to say goodbye :( Those two things can really put a damper on a day. Bummer :(

Glad the rain appears to be staying away on your last day though - I guess that's till to be seen but it sure made for a GREAT start with now crowds :thumbsup2

Prior to this trip, we were very shy with characters as well. I don't know what happened this time, but I felt a lot more comfortable just carrying out a conversation with them. I think it takes a little more getting used to for the "non-face" characters since they don't actually "talk". DD was very shy at first even when we gave her ideas of what to ask the princesses. But once she saw the fun reactions and responses, she got over her shyness.

Saturday April 21st Part II - MK / Last Day

We strolled down by the side of the Castle towards Liberty Square. The kids were getting a bit hungry as it was about 11am. I suddenly was in the mood for some funnel cake. So I pulled out my trusty ol iPad and used the food finder app once again, and saw that Sleepy Hollow does funnel cakes which was only a few yards from where we were standing. We all snacked on the funnel cake and rehydrated ourselves. Then, we made one last attempt at trying PoTC. And guess what? The rides was temporarily closed, again. Is that ride ever open??? DD wanted to see the Enchanted Tiki Room one more time. Personally, I could have done without it. But DD really took a liking to this attraction. She had been singing the “Tiki Tiki Tiki….” song for the last three days! So we watched the show again and she loved it again.

IMG_2256.jpg

We went back to PP afterwards for one last time to use our FPs. I think I lost count how many times we went on this one but I think it was 5. Or was it 6? Well, whatever the number was, it was clearly not enough for me to notice the scene where Hook and Pan are having a sword dual on top of the mast of the ship until this very last ride when I happened to look up and saw them. I said to DW “ I don’t know how I missed that part after riding this so many times”. And her answer was “Hook and Pan are having a sword duel? I didn’t see that!”.

I guess it was fitting that PP was the last ride we went on at Disney for this trip. It was a big hit. It was almost 1pm so we headed to Crystal Palace for our ADR. I booked this one because I thought DS would really enjoy meeting Pooh and his friends. DS of course, fell asleep in his stroller on the way over there. When we checked in, the CM told us we could bring our stroller in since DS was sleeping in it. The characters were great. Pooh and Tigger showed up first and DS was still sound asleep.

IMG_2267.jpg

Tigger quietly squatted down next to the stroller, and posed next to our sleeping DS by putting his hands next to his ears and pretending he was sleeping as well. DD bounced with Tigger. I told both Pooh and Tigger that DS would have LOVED meeting them and that he would be so disappointed when he later finds out he missed them. Eeyore and Piglet were next and by then DS woke up. He was not shy with them at all. He went over and gave each of them a bear hug. Piglet played with our Mickey balloon that was tied to our stroller, hugging it, and trying to pull it away.

IMG_2287_edited.jpg

When Eeyore showed up we instinctively gave him our autograph books and pens, he seemed to indicate that he couldn’t sign them. DW and I immediately noticed that he didn’t have fingers but more like “mittens” so we told him we were sorry. The kids hugged him from both sides. They asked to see his pinned tail. At the end, Eeyore pointed back to our autograph books and pens, and he went ahead and signed them which I interpreted as a special gesture. (Can someone verify this for me?)

DS then saw Pooh and Tigger in the distance and I knew we wouldn’t be able to leave CP until he met them. So I asked one of the character “handlers” in the restaurant, explained that DS was asleep when Pooh and Tigger came by, and if there was anyway to see them. CM was extremely friendly and said “Absolutely” and told us that we can ask any of the CMs if he hadn’t seen them before we left and they would make sure to squeeze us in. Well, it was only 45 minutes since we sat down and Pooh and Tigger had re-entered our section. I asked our waitress if it would be okay to sit here a little longer for DS to meet them, and she said we should and we could stay as long as we needed. (I made sure to give her an extra good tip!). DD in the mean time took off with DW to meet Tiana. It was almost 2:30pm when I looked at the time so I told DD/DW to try to get there in front of the pack because there would only be a 30 minute window for her meet and greet before she has to leave for the parade. DS loved meeting Pooh and Tigger when they came by our table for the second time. And they clearly remembered what I had told them when they were at our table earlier while DS was sleeping. They hugged him, played with his nose. Pooh leaned over to give DS a kiss and he actually made a kissing noise when he did. I just laughed out loud. Tigger showed DS how to bounce by holding on to both of his hands and jumping up and down.

By the time DS was done, DD and DW returned as they already finished their meet and greet. It was only 2:40pm and DW had told me there were about 8 or 9 families in front of them when she called. When I commented on how fast that was, she said there was something happening behind the scenes that got Tiana a little flustered and the handlers started moving the line really fast with Tiana spending very little time with each group. DD still loved it and got her pictures. But apparently Tiana got through the whole line in 10 minutes (instead of the scheduled 30 minute window), then had to rush off somewhere. We’ll soon find out why.

We left Crystal Palace and turned down Main Street. DW and DD went into the Emporium to the some more souvenir shopping. It was 2:50 so I figured I could take DS out on to Main Street to watch the Celebrate a Dream Come True parade since he didn’t get to see it on our full MK day due to his nap. I positioned myself standing behind a family that was sitting on the edge of the sidewalk and holding DS in my arms so he would be able to see. That’s when I heard the faint music of the parade coming from the direction of Liberty Square and the Hub. So not only did it sound like the parade was coming from the opposite direction, but it appeared to have started early. A CM for the parade line was standing near by so I asked her about it. She said that because of the storm moving in on the radar, the decision was made to start the parade at 2:40pm and start from Frontierland so that it could end at Main Street a little after 3pm. Ahhh, so that’s why Tiana was flustered. She had to finish the meet and greet in time for the early start of the parade! Anyway, DS loved the parade. He was pointing out all of the characters. Even yelled out when he saw Captain Hook and Pluto! After a week in Disney, he had become an expert on all of the characters and knew who all of them were. He had a great time watching the parade. I think this one is quickly becoming a favorite parade of mine as well. The music is catchy and energetic. There are a lot of interactions that happen with the characters walking the parade. I also saw how hard the non-character dancers were working. You could see how much they were sweating but amazingly kept a smile on their face the whole time. I can’t even imagine how hot it must be for those who are underneath the character masks. Yikes!

Once the parade was over, we caught up with DD and DS in the stores and did a little more shopping. The Emporium was packed! I asked one of the CMs if the store was usually this crowded right after the afternoon parade and she said not this much. She thought that there were a lot of people about to leave the park due to the weather and they were filtering through the stores on their way out. At 3:45, we left the store. On our way to the exit, the Main Street CMs with the hoola hoops were out in front of City Hall. So, DD wanted to try it again. Sometimes it’s the little things, but for some reason, I just loved the idea of the kids playing with hoola-hoops in Main Street!

IMG_2293.jpg

We said our goodbyes to Magic Kingdom as we exited the park and hopped on the Resort Monorail. What a great day we had! To me, this was my favorite MK day probably it felt like a complete bonus. I woke up thinking we weren’t going to do much because of the rain. By the end of the day, the kids got to go on a ton of rides, we had an impromptu Crystal Palace lunch, and we capped it off with a parade! So, even though we were all a little sad that we had to leave MK and eventually Disney, we were still mostly all smiles because we had such a great time. Well, DD did cry a little bit as we were exiting the Park because she didn’t want to leave.

Plan was to head out to the airport from Poly around 4:45pm. So we hung out at the lobby of GCH while DD took a nap on one of the couches. DW did one more last minute shopping. There was a small group of people gathering in the set of couches next to us. Appeared like a wedding party. There was a gentleman dressed as though he would be officiating the ceremony. A Disney photographer was also standing there who we chatted with. It turned out to be a vow renewal and was going to be taking place at Sunset Pointe. Meanwhile the dark clouds were moving in by the minute. I think they were able to get the ceremony done before the real rain hit, at least I hope they did.

There was one more business that had to be taken care of before we headed out. Our Mickey balloon. Last year, DW tried to somehow salvage it by letting the air out and packing it. Didn’t work too well when we tried to re-inflate it at home. But I didn’t want to just let it go into the sky either. It was only 4 days old and probably still had a few more days in it. I waited until the kids went to use the bathroom with DW (because I knew they would throw a fit if they knew I was getting rid of the balloon), then I took the balloon to the front desk. I told one of the CMs that I didn’t want the balloon to go to waste and would like to have another child play with it. She said absolutely and said she would give it to one of the kids that would be checking in that day.

So now we were all set. We got in the minivan, and headed to the airport. The rain started coming down just as we were exiting Disney World. We returned our rental, packed up the kids’ cars seats, and checked them in at the airline counter. Rode one last monorail ride to get to our gate. And we were on our way home.

All of us were happy to be home even though we missed Disney like crazy. DD said she loved being back in her own bed that night.

Every Disney trip is different so it’s difficult to compare one to the other. This was the longest we’ve spent at Disney AND we probably did the most while we were there of all our trips. We all had an absolutely wonderful time. And even DW who before the trip was set on not going back for at least two years, raised the possibility of a “short trip”!

If you’ve followed my TR all the way to the end here, Thank you!!! and hope you enjoyed it. This was a lot of fun for me to relive our Disney trip and to share our stories with you. A little sad that it's come to an end but fortunately my Disney story will continue!

As it turns out, I will be making a solo side trip to Disneyland just for a day while I’m in San Diego for a conference in October and I am starting a PTR for it. I’ve only been to DLR twice with the last one being back in 1984 when I was only 10. So, am very excited to see what it looks like now especially the new Carsland! I’ll also be taking tons of pictures with my new and improved camera, making comparisons to WDW, and going at commando speed to hit all the rides without the contraints of a stroller! Along the way to October, there will also be a couple of mini-trip reports for Colonial Williamsburg for the 4th of July and Las Vegas in August! So I hope you can follow along!!
