Our dog accidentally killed our kitten this morning

Our 14 year old border collie who doesn't hear or see as well as he used to was pounced on by our 9 week old kitten as he walked toward me on the couch. I only saw movement out of the corner of my eye, heard him growl and grab, and then the kitten is convulsing on the floor. Our dog was startled and just reacted by throwing her to the floor. I raced her to the vet but there was nothing anyone could do.

I'm a mess. The vet assistants were so nice, and cleaned her up so that when my kids get home this afternoon they can say goodbye. DH came home to dig a hole in our really hard ground, God bless him. And I'm just replaying the whole thing over and over in my head.

DD, 8, is going over to her friend's house straight from school. I thought about getting her instead, but keep thinking I should let her have a good afternoon before having to say goodbye to her kitten.

Anyway, having just spent the last four hours in a fog, crying and staring at the wall, I thought I would share just to get it off my chest and see if anyone had any words of wisdom.

Thanks for listening.

I'm so sorry that happened. Hugs to all of you.

Aw, so sad, I am so sorry.

Hugs for you and your family.

My brother accidentally killed our kitten when he was about 12. He was sleeping with it in the waterbed and the kitten got stuck in between the waterbed liner and the side of the bed.

My brother was devastated.

 I am so sorry you've had such a sad day. I think you made a great decision to let DD have fun.

Oh, I'm so very sorry. It was a kitten's exhuberance mixed with your dog's instinct to protect himself--a true accident where no one is at fault. I hope your children will be OK.

 Sorry to hear of what happened. Maybe you could plant a pine tree where you bury your cat so every Christmas your kids can decorate it and remember the cat.

Awwww, I feel so sorry for everybody and for your dog and kitten. :( :( I wish I had some words of wisdom to share with you, sadly I don't. :( I'm just so very sorry and sad to hear such sad new. :( Little kittens are just crazy and fun loving, and elderly dogs with hearing and sight impairments mean no harm, no foul, they just want to protect themselves because they feel so vulnerable, it's their instinct. No one could have expected anything like that to happen. :(

I'm sorry. :(
