Our dog accidentally killed our kitten this morning

so so sorry about your little cat.... i myself have 3 kitties of my own & no words can express how you must be feeling.... it`s rotten how nature & instinct work is`nt it? thoughts are with you & your family at this sad time. xxx please don`t blame your dog though . He as been a member of your family for so long, & is now an old timer, & needs to be loved & cared for(which you do... being a pet lover,I know this cause it shows.. )... He probably knows he is not in the family good books, but it is hard having an old family friend living with a new younger( much younger) family member... god bless to you & your family(pets included){{{{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}}}:( :( :(

She was a beautiful kitten. I'm very sorry that this happened. {{{HUGS}}}

DD came apart for a good while. She and DS petted Tink through the tears. Tink had an orange ribbon (DD's favorite color) she liked to chase, so we cut that in half and put one half with Tink and DD put the other half around a black and white stuffed kitten that DS found in his room and gave to her when she came in. DD also put her bell and feather toy with her. She was wrapped in a soft blanket. DD wanted to put the last shovel of dirt over the box. We placed some sunflowers (articifical) and she and DS spelled out her name in rocks.

And it comes in waves. You think you are cried out, and then it comes up again.

Thanks again to everyone for your support and prayers.:grouphug:

Oh wow, I had no idea your kitty was Tink too. Man I'm tearing up just thinking about it. My 2 kitty babies (Tink and Martha) have received a lot of extra love since reading your story.

What a beautiful fur baby your tink was.

I am so sorry to hear about Tink (she looks a lot like our Chloe). I can only imagine how sad you all are, you are in my thoughts and prayers. :(

So sorry for you and your family in the loss of Tink. Prayers on the way for all of you as you all deal with this tragedy.

What a cute kitty, DL. Tink was so cute there. I am very sorry to hear that, a terrible accident. Know well, DL, even little young ones, like Tink, are at the bridge............

called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet
goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and
play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and
comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those
who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember
them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss
someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and
looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers.
Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs
carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you
cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses
rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once
more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never
absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
I'm so sorry to hear about your kitten. How tragic for the whole family. :(

Please don't let anyone blame your dog. I'm sure that he didn't realize what would happen and wasn't acting out in a vicious way. You can never know what happened.. the kittens claw could have accidentally scratched his eye or something and it caused him to snap at the kitten, just like any other animal would have. I'm sure it wasn't his intention and that he is still the loveable family pet you have had for years.

((((((((((hugs)))))))))))))

Last night we had a monstrous thunderstorm -- the worst I have ever heard. Both kids ended up in bed with us and we were all jumping. It was LOUD!

DD lost a friend who was on her gymnastics team to a tragic accident two years ago and their coach told the girls that everytime it thundered they would know it was Jennifer up in heaven doing her tumbling for them.

So last night DD says, "I think Jennifer must be tumbling and Tink must be pouncing together!"

Out of the mouths of babes. . .

Thank you.

I think the dog + cat thing is too individualized to really say. Our dogs (2 border collies) and older cat get along fine. They pretty much ignore one another. It's the declining faculties of our oldest BC and the introduction of a playful kitten that ended in tragedy.

Obviously, now, we won't have another cat until our oldest passes on.

As for the earlier posters on the danger to the kids, thank you for your concern. We have talked with them about making sure they call to him and he sees them clearly before coming up on him, not because he would ever mean to hurt them, but because he will react when startled. They are both old enough to understand. Sadly, our little kitten was not.
