Our dog accidentally killed our kitten this morning

I am so sorry, I know how devastating it is to lose a pet.:(

Don't blame yoursellf. This was a true accident. The kitten was probably all peppy and exuberant and the dog, with it's limitations, acted out of instinct to protect itself.

It's hard, but these things are good for kids to experience. Teaches them good grieving and coping skills...at least that's what my family therapist neighbor says!

I'm so sorry this happened to your family

Thank you all for the hugs.

My DS, 11, just got home. DH picked him up and told him and he came in crying. After a few questions, he just went into his room and shut the door. :(

It's amazing how a little kitten can get into your heart in such a short time.

I'd like to start by saying that I'm sorry............

If your doggie is getting on in age and perhaps doesn't see or hear well, then your family runs a risk. If someone startles him, they may end up being attacked.

We had a border here at work (my boss') and when he got up in age (16) he became hard of hearing, had cataracts, and was actually getting senile. One evening, out of the blue, my boss was on the couch watching TV and "something" happened to Josh. He got up, ran over to boss, and bit him on the face (nose). It was like he was possesed.

He was kept isolated (from their other 5 dogs) and watched carefully. Went downhill. Started "getting lost" in the yard and freaking out pretty often.

You have to honestly and carefully look at the possibility that he is becoming a danger to his family.............

They don't know the difference between right and wrong when they are startled, they just react.

Oh I know. We only had tink for a few weeks when DS accidentally stepped on her and broke her leg. I was standing right there and I know he had no idea she was behind him. He felt terrible. We were lucky that she didn't have more serious injurries. Before our dog Sandy passed in June I would make sure Tink was put up when we weren't around. She would jump on sandy and Sandy would usually fall on her. It was only by luck that we didn't have a tragic accident too.

I am so sorry. I know what its like to lose a cat. My main concern are your children. If he can do this to a little kitten your children should be very careful. My husband had a dog that loss all senses and anytime you would accidently touch him he would try and bite you. My daughter was a toddler at the time and he bit her and we took him to be put down. Just teach your kids to stay away or don't sneak up on him.

We called our little kitten Tink, too. Here is a picture of her from less than a week ago:

What a cute kitty, I am so sorry this happened to you. I know how bad it can be for a family. We had a window fall years ago when we lived in an older house, breaking our kitten's neck...Our neighbors saw him hanging there and came in my house to get me (I was in the cellar, kids at school). It was one of the worst moments of my life taking him out of that window...{{{HUGS}}}...Accidents do happen sometimes and they are very hard to take, you are in my thoughts and prayers now...:(

How terrible and how sad. My DD8 sends you and your DD8 hugs. She will hug her kitten for you tonight. We can identify. One of our last kitties went into convulsions and died about a year ago. I was at work and my DD and DH called in tears. Our kiity fell off the porch when he was out with his mommy. There wasn't anything we could do. We buried him beside his "grandfather" in the backyard. Her new Kitten Ashes (seen in my signature) had a colpased lung as a 3 mointh old but is now 1 year and as strong as can be.

I am so very sorry for your loss! Losing a pet is a terrible thing as they are a special part of your family! My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family!
