We left Magic Kingdom shortly after dinner as the park was closing. As we mentally geared up to do the whole wait-and-load-monorail, wait-and-load-tram ordeal I looked over at the bus stop and saw a Port Orleans bus just waiting for us to board. Dix and I decided that kids and I would load the bus and he would drive the car and we would see what the difference in time was in getting back to the hotel.
I was happy to skip the monorail and tram to the parking lot. I had stood in enough lines of people for one day! Dont forget we had started out at home at 4:15 AM that morning, and had been in countless lines throughout the day.
Sis couldnt take it anymore. She was crabby and whiney. I did my best to keep her happy on the bus, but she was furious that she had to sit in my lap and there wasnt a seat for her to sit in by herself.
I made Boo sit in my lap so that she could have that seat, but that still didnt make her happy. She kept trying to slide out of it and walk around. When she did this, I would just grab her and put her back up on the seat.
We fought this silent war for quite some time. For a brief period when she did sit still I watched where we were going out the window and as we passed Fort Wilderness, I noticed that we were definitely going back a way we had not come when Dix had been driving. I figured there must be several ways to get to one place at Disney World.
Siss war with me was getting more heated by the minute. She did not want to sit down, whether it be in her own seat or on my lap. Finally I just had to hold her against her will.
Im not sure what it is about my family and weird verbal sounds (remember my bark/laugh with the customs guy?) but Sis has this horrible deep yell she lets out when shes mad. I also have it on video and hope to post it, because I know that you all have heard nothing like this come out of a young child!
Anyway, as we approached Port Orleans and Sis and I were in the throws of our private little battle, she decided to let it rip, and bellowed out her weird deep yell with all her might.
It went on an on, one long monotone yell. BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!
The entire bus, including Sis, became silent. My ear closest to her was ringing. Boo had covered his ears and hunkered down in his seat like he was waiting for a grenade to explode. No one spoke. Im not sure people were even breathing.
The people across the aisle were just staring at me in shock that such an awful deep sound could come out of such a sweet little toddler. I shrugged and said, Sorry about that. Imagine what its like for me to live with it!
All at once, everyone burst out laughing, including Sis. She was no longer mad. My ear was still ringing.
The bus dropped us off at Port Orleans and it was quite a hike to our room. Boo was a little spooked by the darkness and the shadows that those fern-like Southern trees cast on the pavement. A horse-drawn carriage crept by us in the darkness, and I have to admit, I found the swaying dark shadows and the Clip, Clop, Clip,Clop of the horses hooves a bit eerie myself.
When we were finally in our room, I helped the kids change into their pajamas. I was expecting Dix to walk in the door at any minute, so while we waited I pointed out the pattern on the bedspreads to the kids. I remembered Janet2Ks wedding planning trip report in which she had noticed the Hidden Mickeys in the pattern of the bedspread. The kids and I studied it for a long time but we couldnt see those Mickeys.
An hour passed and still no Dix. I was getting worried. I tucked the kids in, but they didnt seem like they were sleepy. I think they were still really wound up from the day.
I picked up the phone and tried to call Dix. He didnt answer his cell phone. Now I was really worried; hes usually very reachable on his cell.
Rather than settling down, the kids seemed to be getting more wound up. I was getting cranky. Dix still was not coming through the door.
What if he forgot the room number? What if he forgot the hotel? I knew he could overcome these problems easy enough. He had the room key with our hotel written on it.
What if .. what if he got in an accident? What if something really bad had happened?
I flipped the TV on for the kids. So many Disney shows to watch, imagine that! That calmed them a bit.
Im not sure how much time had gone by, but I finally turned off the TV and demanded that the kids try to sleep. I feel badly about how cranky I was, but I was really, really worried.
Dix FINALLY walked through the door, almost two hours after our arrival back at the hotel room. He was very discouraged. He had waited in line for a long time to do the whole Monorail/Tram/Car commute, and then had proceeded to get absolutely, utterly lost in the dark. At one point, he ended up halfway back to Orlando. With the help of several people at a gas station, he had finally been pointed in the right direction.
He had been using the map in the Unofficial Guide to navigate. He opened it up and showed me the map he had used. I studied it for a long time and realized I couldnt make heads nor tails of it either.
His cell was in our hotel room, turned off. No wonder he didnt answer.
As we snuggled in to sleep, I was just so thankful he was safely back with us.
That night I dreamed that the bedspread with the hidden Mickeys was for sale and I was going to buy it so that I could show my mom the beautiful blue colors and find those Mickeys.
