other resorts

DVC members only get cash discounts on DVC resorts. However, you can use poitns to stay at other Disney Collection resorts. Disney Collection is DCL, plus the other DIsney on-sites, with the exception of teh value resorts.

The points used for each Disney resort other than DVC is negotiated annually between DVC and each resort. It is usually not very ecconomical use of points, since they are usually quite high for non-DVC resorts. I can't imagine wanting to stay in a regular resort hotel room anyway, when you can stay in a full size villa for less points and more luxury.

While I agree with this in theory, there are WDW resorts that offer things - both tangible and intangible - that a DVC resort doesn't. Consierge Services, for one; that glorious South Pacific feeling of The Polynesian, for another.

We are going to trade out for AKL concierge and for one reason only. We saw the early morning safari trip that you get staying on that level at AKL so we figured what the heck.

We would like to do the morning safari at AKL as well, and if we do that, it will be staying on points. By the time we get "caught up" with points, I hope it's still offered.

How much is the member cash discount and is it ever a good deal to use dvc points for other resorts?
The member discount is 25% off rack rate on DVC resort accommodations only. It's not always available though...it all depends on if DVC feels that they won't be able to get those rooms/villas booked on points before they release them for cash. So you'd need to first see if they even have the size and time of year available to book. A good deal at the non-DVC WDW resorts is kind of in the eye of the member. To one person it's a terrible waste of points because you'll pay significantly more points per night to stay in just a regular hotel room at the non-DVC WDW resort vs. a larger size villa at a DVC resort (even to stay at the moderates costs more pts than to stay at a DVC resort) but to another person who really wanted to go to Disney and couldn't get into a DVC resort either because they waited too long to book for the week they wanted or it's just a popular week or whatever...it may be a good deal all the same just because they don't have to lay out any cash. :scratchin Alot of members would rather just book with an AP rate though to stay at the non DVC's rather than spend so much more in points. But again, whether or not it's worth it to spend those points outside the DVC's really differs from member to member and how many points they may have to spend. Personnally, I'd rather spend 232 pts for a 2bdrm villa at OKW for example for the first week of Nov. Saturday thru Saturday than to spend 335 pts to stay in just a garden view room at the GF ...IYKWIM ::yes::
