OT: Washington D.C.

I'm planning a family trip to Washington D.C. for Spring Break. I have a question for those of you who are 'in the know'. Is Dupont Circle/ Embassy Row considered a 'safe' area? I want to stay somewhere where my family will feel safe walking on the streets at night. Would this be it?

Found a GREAT price for a 4-star on Hotwire and the safety issue will be the deciding factor.
