OT-Tip for ear piercing?

I tried this on the community board but got no response so far so I thought I would try here -- thanks!

Should I tip for getting my DD's ears pierced? She will be getting them done at a kids hair/nail salon type of place. If so, how much? 15% 20% ?

I have 4 DDs and they have gotten ear piercings a couple of times at a mall - most recently just 2 weeks ago, and never have tipped.

But, if I recall correctly, when my older 2 got their navels pierced at a tattoo place, I think that they did tip.

I had my DD's ears pierced at Libby Lu's and didn't even think to tip...I hope I wasn't rude!! It honestly didn't cross my mind!

I will say...she was 6 when she had them pierced and I'm REALLY glad they had two employees piercing both ears at the same time, otherwise I think she'd only have one ear pierced still to this day, despite how much I prepared her for it!

My girls both have their ears pierced and we did not tip for it. Nor did I tip for my belly button, my tragus or my cartiledge that was done at a tattoo/piercing shop. My DBF didn't tip for his tongue either.

DD was almost 6 the first time she got her ears pierced. They did both at the same time, but one of them ended up lower and at an angle. She wouldn't have any part of getting it redone.
Fast forward 1.5 years later and she has some dangling earrings she wants to wear. She took one look at how uneven her piercings were and we went back the next day to get the one redone. (yes, it was off enough that we didn't even had to wait for the old one to heal before getting it repierced.)

I didn't tip either time.

We had our daughter's ears done when she was 15 months old. Her pediatrician did it, so no we didn't tip. =) Even if we had them done at the mall, I still wouldn't have tipped.

Had DD10's ears pierced at the mall (at a girly-chain store named Claire's) and didn't even think to tip. We paid at the register just like if we were buying earrings.

You bring up a good point, because I tip 15-20% when DS and DD get their haircuts, and if that same place did piercings, am sure I would have tipped.

I only tipped for my piercings I had done at a piercing place, not the ones I had done at Claire's or the doctor's.

Ummmm yes, I know it's a family site. As you can see I do have a family.

FYI, the Tragus is the small part of your ear next to your cheek. Nothing family unfriendly about that. And trust me, that's about as "wild" and crazy as my piercings get. LOL

Funny! We haven't been to this place before but we are going for a birthday party and I have decided to surprise my DD by getting her ears pierced before the party. It appears to be a Libby Lu type place but they do haircuts, manicures, etc for kids. The place is owned by the aunt of the birthday girl so maybe I could ask her mom about the tip issue.

This is EXACTLY why we had it done at the pediatrician's office. Our children's Pediatrician said "DO NOT GET THEM DONE AT THE MALL!" Those places are not sanitary and you risk getting infection.

We got DD's ears pierced at Libby Lu the first time around.

They tried to do the two guns at a time thing. One got stuck in DD's ear, ripped the skin, that ear ended up infected, and they were uneven on top of everything. We let those piercings close.
We did NOT tip!

I later found out it was the first time doing a customer piercing for the gal doing DD's problem ear, even though I specifically asked for someone with lots of experience. I guess they figured one person with experience made up for one without.


My advice is to make sure everyone involved with the piercing is experienced!
Of course I would also advise against going anywhere that uses a piercing gun, but plenty of folks have gone that route with no problems, so I realize I'm in the minority there.

Next time around we went to a tattoo/piercing shop and had one ear done at a time, using sterile needles, no piercing gun. No doubt our guy had plenty of experience, some with piercings in places I can't even imagine.
He was great though and it was a much, much better experience! Plus he had some pretty cool tatts for DD to look at to keep her mind off her ears.
I did tip that time.

I thought about going the pediatricians office route, but when I asked about it at the practice we go to they said they do very, very few piercings. So I went back to the experience thing. I think that's really important.

Some of the body piercing places I called said they did not work on children, others said no problem. Personally I think the biggest issue with a lot of them is that the environment really is not appropriate for children. (at least IMO)

One of the places who said they would pierce my DD's ears did suggest I come by and see if I would be comfortable bringing her in first.

The place I found was fine. They did suggest that a weekday morning would be a better choice than evenings or weekends though.

Here in Wisconsin you must be 16 years old to even enter a piercing parlor, so that was out for us. I called my ped and she said to just go to Clair's. My (then 7-year old) DD had it done one ear at time with no problems. I'm very proud of her! She took care of them herself and her holes have not closed up .

I hope that you know that I was just kidding (see the wink and big smile smilies after my comments above.)
But I really did not know what a tragus was and I DID google it before I posted. I had never heard that word before I had read it on your post. (And FireFox's spell check does underline tragus- so it doesn't know it either.)
