I have a service dog, and this weekend will be my first time bringing him to a hotel (I'm going to a convention). He will be working pretty much three days straight (Friday thru Sunday), staying over night with us at a hotel and going home Sunday night.
I've never had him at a hotel before, we've already informed the hotel I'll be bringing him so thats already taken care of and I won't be hassled.
I was just wondering if anyone has any tips or suggestions on service dogs in hotels, I'm very nervous about it, as i've never done it before.

Weird I'm going to a convention too this weekend, with MY SD too.

I would ask to stay on the first floor, it really helps with potty breaks since travels usually throws off your routine. There is nothing worse than being on the 23rd floor and having to get to the evalvator, wait for it, and for it to make ALL its stops and then get outside to an appropriate spot! It happened us once when visiting NYC. I would ask for either a ground floor room or for a room closest to the exit to ouside if that is not the ground floor.

Bring some toys, his food, some bowls and your all set. I awalys bring an extra leash and collar, and a flexi lead for potty breaks and exercise.

You might also want to take a few bottles of water to mix with the hotel water so the water change won't be so much of a shock...It's the change in water that gets to Cash....

Luckily, if you're flying, the SD food and water count as medical equipment and don't count against your luggage quota...

when you are in your hotel room take his/her harness off. when i stay at a hotel we always try and potty before going in to go to bed. at home i let my dog on the couch and my bed but not at the hotel.

Rather than do that, giving Cash the idea he is " off duty", I trade his harness for a vest so that he knows he is still on duty and I can take him out for a walk without having to get him all harnessed up again when I'm probably going to be using my electric scooter instead of hanging onto the harness handle and walking beside him. I also trade his harness for a vest on long plane rides.. ...
Still on duty but able to curl up and sleep....

Of course, it also means that sometimes his wardrobe rivals mine for luggage space...

Ahh, but since it's his professional work clothing, he should get a clothing allowance ;)

Thank you guys for the tips :)
I don't know what floor we're on, I didn't think to ask, and it's too late to change it now, so I have to hope for the best.
But I appreicate the suggestions, it's definetly calmed me down a little about going.

I would call the hotel and make your request. It really shouldn't be too late, especially considering why you are making the request. Most hotels do not assign the actual rooms until 2-3 days before the scheduled arrival. It certainly wouldn't hurt.
Good Luck!

Sure, he gets his dog food, wardrobe, and toys and I leave spare undies at home to make room...
