Normally this would go in the Prayers forum, but my sister only posts here so far that I know of. I would like to ask for prayers for my sister, Momie on the Disboards and Lucybell on VMK. She'd noticed in the past few days that she was having problems with bruising and when she'd scratch herself or even brush her teeth, she was having bleeding (along with other areas). Well she went to the doctor yesterday and it took them a while to get her results back. At midnight they called her and had her report to the ICU immediately. Her platelet count was down to about a 1000. It should be more in the hundreds of thousands!
They've been doing tests today and have been waiting for the hematologist to show up this evening. They did rule out leukemia by doing a blood marrow test, but think it may be a blood disorder involving the spleen. At this point however, they are going to treat her with steroids until they have a definite answer.
This definitely comes at a bad time here at the holidays, and does put a strain on her family. If you guys would remember us we'd really appreciate it.

I'll be sure to keep her in my prayers- I know how hard it is, especially around the holidays. I hope this gets figured out soon! Best wishes for you and your family :grouphug:

Momie please know that I am keeping you in my thoughts and prayers as well as your family.

Only good thoughts and well wishes, that all is well soon :grouphug:

You are in my prayers Momie! Having a low platelet count is not a good thing, but it can be treated. I hope the doctors are able to help diagnose this ASAP so you and your family can overcome this!

(I have had low platelet counts due to my arthritis and the meds I take, that's how I know you can fight it!)

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that.
I will keep her and her family in my prayers.

Many hugs to you, Momie and her family. :grouphug:
And please tell her to try to keep up her spirits and have as many laughs as possible. It does really help with the physical problems. :)

I'm so sorry to hear that. I'll be praying for her and everyone who cares about her. God bless you and your sister (and all of your family)!

Please tell her that she and her family will be in my thoughts and prayers. I hope they find a way to start helping her very soon. :grouphug:

Wow, thats scary, im so sorry to hear about that! I will keep the situation in my prayers and hope that all is well soon for the holidays! Try to keep them all happy!

My heart goes out to her and the rest of your family. I will be sending happy thoughts and pixie dust her way. I don't really know your sister, but I want to wish her the best! Thank goodness they ruled out Leukemia, that is a good sign. It is great to have some good news in times like these. :goodvibes

Maybe someone artistic can make a cool avatar or logo for her that we (her supporters) can place on our avatar or signature, to show our love and well wishes.

Someone on another board I go to has breast cancer and a lot of people starting putting customized pink ribbons on their avatars/sigs (I think it had her name on it). I think that would be very nice, and when she sees a lot of Dis people showing their support with the logo, it should raise her spirits! It's not much, but little things like that can really make someone's day when they are going through hard times.

So, any creative people up for making something like that for Momie, for us to put in our sigs? Of course, I would have to take a bunch of stuff off mine to make room :rotfl2: but I would be happy to!

Again, best wishes to you, your sister and your family. I feel sure that with so many people thinking of her and watching out for her, things will be ok :)

:grouphug: <---Dis members giving Momie a group hug!

Prayers for your sister to regain her health, for the family who can give her and each other loving support, and for the medical staff to quickly find the cause and correct treatment for her condition. Hugs!

I am sorry to hear about your sister. December 04 was a tough time for me and family. My mom went through a difficult surgery. We were all nervous but everything worked out in the end. Thank you letting us know. I will keep her and your family in my prayers. If someone were to make a avator or picture in support of Momie I would gladly attach it to my sig. As the dis say....prayers and pixie dust!! :grouphug:

I like your new sig, Em! And is that the correct spelling of "Kacakalackackaie" in your profile? Hahaha. You know, I never heard that word until I moved down here from "kacalackie".

Sorry OT. :guilty:

You and your family will be in my prayers too. I would like to offer a thought here. I lost my father 5 years ago to what is called "myelodysplasia". It began with bruising and bleeding as you described, (for that matter as it progressed even being hugged produced bruising), low platelet counts (again towards the end he was having to receive platelets every other day), he also began suffering breathing problems (asthma) and two other symptoms I am sorry elude me at this moment. Leukemia was ruled out at the time, as were numerous other possible disorders. The sad part was, it took three years to acquire the five symptoms that finally led to the diagnosis of myelodysplasia (a blood disorder). Because each of those symptoms was treated separately, noone ever "put them together" until that late.

Myelodysplasia is a precursor to leukemia, but never reached that stage before my father passed. If diagnosed earlier, we were told there could have been several more good years for him. So, I just wanted to offer this information for your family's consideration. By the time my father was diagnosed correctly, it was less than a year he had left. Again, my prayers will include your family, my friend.

Your sister will be in my thoughts and prayers. I hope she recovers quickly :grouphug:

Thanks guys, I'll definitely let her know you are thinking of her. We're hoping it is similar to something one of our aunts had when we were kids, that eventually led to her having to have her spleen taken out. Of course she had to use steroids for a while, which makes you bloat up a bit, but it is by far better than a lot of things out there. Her family just had a nasty bout of stomach virus over the Thanksgiving holidays, so we think that may be what triggered this.
And we know about those hospital visits and holidays. We did that thing back in 2000 with our daughter. It is tough on everyone.:(
