OT: Prayers for my sister

So glad she is doing better and I hope you have a definite diagnosis soon.

Well wishes for all!

Mal

Lord, I thank you for the encouraging news on Kim's sister and ask that you will hear our prayers and continue to improve her platelet count and get her healthy again! Let your angels be around her and protect her during this time. May you guide the doctors in their search for the cause of this problem.
In Jesus name,
Amen

Very glad to hear that the platelet counts are coming up, and hope everything continues to go well. If it is ITP, here is a good (and likely accurate, as it is from the National Institutes of Health) set of web pages for more information:
http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/dci/Diseases/Itp/ITP_WhatIs.html
The summary link on the left of the page is a nice synopsis.

ITP stands for idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Idiopathic means "people don't know WHY it happens." Thrombocytopenic just means low platelet count, and purpura means bruising. Put it together, and it's just a fancy way of saying "low platelets and bruising that we don't know why happens, but we see this." However, at least it is a disease which people have a lot of experience with.

Again, glad to hear the good news, and hope everything gets under control and she continues to improve!

We just got home from visiting my sister in the hospital. She finally got moved to a regular room today, and says that they are supposed to let her go home tomorrow. Her platelets were back up to 57,000 this afternoon, and now she is on steroids to help them along. They still haven't really determined what she has, but maybe a form of something called ITP. My mom has looked it up, but all I can remember is it is some form of a blood problem. (got to remember to look it up on my own):) She will have to go to a local cancer center to have them check it regularly for her. However, she does have some kind of warning system in the bruises that popped up all at once. So hopefully that will be a clue for any future problems.

Thanks for the info Joe, my Mom never can remember the long names when she tells me something like that. My sister could only remember the idiopathic part last night herself.:)
Wouldn't you know the medical community would give a long name to something like that.:)

:sunny: Wow. How old is she? That was a very unselfish, sweet thing to say. I would have cried if my daughter said something like that. Sound likes she is, and will grow up to be even more of, a wonderful person! :sunny:

Sorry, this is long and if you don't feel like reading, at least read the red part please!

Although this is not a "lucky" thing at all to have happen, you are lucky that the doctor's at least know what it is, and have a name for it. I have had severe bladder problems causing pain and misery since I was 12. They came up with a name for it when I was about 18-20 (don't remember exactly when), calling it Interstitial Cystitis, and just a year or two ago came up with a drug for it. However, when I was a young girl, no one knew what was wrong: I went to many different types of doctors, who had many guesses and drugs to try. One doctor was a Psychologist, b/c this one jerk doctor thought I was making it up, or that I had been abused. He even insinuated abuse by my parents to all three of us, which I was too young to really catch his meaning, but it made my parents very angry as you can imagine. This doctor was very rough and hurt me, causing a fear of doctors that has lasted my whole life (which stinks be/c I have several medical problems and have to see a doc at least once a month). Anyway, I was so releived when a name for it was finally found. Imagine being 12 years old and having a problem (especially a 'private' one) the symptoms of which are almost impossible to describe, and having doctors think it's all in your head.

Unfortunately, some doctors are morons. My grandfather was diagnosed with Gall Bladder Cancer and given a max of 6 months to live. This was 12 years ago and he is still alive. 3 years ago, they told him the cancer had just "disappeared". Some docs said he was misdiagnosed and never had cancer in the first place. It is still a mystery to us, but my family considers it a miracle. My mom's brothers and their wives are very devout Christians (so is the rest of my Mom's side of the family, but especially those four). My uncle has been known to pray for people when they have ailments, and we all believe his prayers have caused miracles. My family thinks his vigilant prayers saved my grandfather. I won't get into my religious beliefs...but I am amazed at what my uncle has accomplished through his prayers. Some people who know him call him an "angel". The universe is very mysterious....you never know.

Ok I'm sorry to post my story on your thread, and get all off track, but my point is, at least the docs know, or have an idea, of what your sis's problem is. When they know, they can usually treat it. I have never heard of this particular affliction, but I feel confident that she will be ok. I will ask my uncle to pray for her. I do believe he has a special gift, silly as it may sound.

My thoughts and prayers are with Momie and her family.

I sent a prayer request for Momie to my Uncle, as stated in my above post. Here is his response:

"It is and honor and privilege to pray for Lucy. It must be a scary
thing for her. I have already prayed for her and continue doing so. when
and if you hear more about her, let me know.
*** Be ye therefore Merciful as your Father is also Merciful ***"

Thinking of Momie. Keeping her in my prayers and thoughts!Get well soon Momie!

Well guys and gals:), the prayers and wonderful thoughts are doing the job.
She did get to go home today, and is very glad to do so! And, one of her sisters in law is bringing her mother in law down from Mississppi and taking the kids back there for the weekend, for their families Christmas celebrations there. My sister has been told that she can't go more than 35 miles from Montgomery, so she will be staying here. But, hey who can't use a few days away from the kids.;) Though I don't know if she'll let the docs know that we are supposed to be spending Christmas day at our uncle's house, who lives about 45 miles away.:) At least our aunt is a nurse.
Her counts were way back up today, so that is a great thing! And, I think the docs have finally decided that it was ITP, since you couldn't get anymore dead on with her symptoms. Not to mention that everything else came back negative.:)
We do definitely thank you all so much for your care and concern this week.
And, now before my back gives completely out on me ( I worked all day and shopped all evening!), I hope all of you have a great weekend.
Kim

Wanted to add: When she left the hospital yesterday, her platelet count was up to 128,000! Woohoo!

I am SO glad to hear that. I'm glad my Uncle prayed for her. I did not know this, but I talked to my Mom about him today (I was telling her my knees have been hurting and that maybe I inherited her bad knees she has had for years). I asked if her knees still bothered her, and she told me that my Uncle had put his hands on her knees and prayed a couple years ago, and since then they have never bothered her.

I am planning a trip back home just to see my Uncle, and hope he can help my back problems. My religious beliefs are agnostic (I do believe there is a Highest Power that we do not have the brain capacity to comprehend) but I feel that no one really knows whether that is true, or what is real as far as religion, God, and the universe. I believe we are not intended to find out, but the Highest Power does exist and works in mysterious ways. I truly believe my Uncle has a special bond with this Highest Power, be it God or Allah or whatever name one chooses to call it, and that he can work miracles through this Supreme Entity.

I am glad you reached out to us at DIS for prayers and that your sister is improving. Thank you, Highest Power!

~Mia~

P.S. I hope I have not offended anyone by disclosing my personal spiritual beliefs (or ideas as I call them).
