I know I'm kinda new around here, but I'm posting this more as a public service announcement.

My dd(4) has been having tonsilitis back to back for the last 5 weeks. She's on her 3rd round of antibiotics, and we have an ENT appt. scheduled for this coming Wednesday.

All that being said, last night I gave her the antibiotic around 9:30. About 10 minutes later she asks if she can come and lay with me (I was still watching the Olympics thing). I told her she could, and at that point she tells me she's itchy. I just kinda was like well don't scratch, and she again tells me she itches a few minutes later. Well I turn the light on, and she's got hives all over her. Off to the ER we went cause I was concerned that Benadryl wouldn't take care of all of it since it was it was antibiotics and in her body.

Needless to say, she couldn't get the benadryl down, and we ended up having to do an IV to get all the meds into her. She threw up twice in the ER, which is not normal for my child.

So the public service announcement part of this post is to let you know, that even if your child(ren) may have taken the antibiotcs several times before ok, and even if this isn't their first dose of the antibiotic this round (this was Eden's 6th dose this round), it's still possible for them to have a reaction to it. It really scares me to think what might have been if she hadn't come into my room and had just went to sleep instead.

How scary!!! I hope she is feeling better.
Thanks for the letting us know.

Allergic reactions are a scary thing. My DS is allergic to three different classes of antibiotics. I have been there...... Glad to hear she is better now

Glad she's feeling better and that it was just a short-term reaction. That must have been scary for you and the ER is never fun. :guilty:

thank you for sharing this with us. i wouldn't have thought it could happen like that. so glad to hear she's ok now!

I went through the same thing over Christmas. DD was a year and a few months and got her first ear infection. She got Amoxocillian and finished the 9 days of the meds. Well 2 days after stopping she got hives on her face. Didn't think much about it. Next day she had hives on her face, and torso, next day arms and legs. We took her to the ER since she was getting worse and wasn't taking the meds anymore and hadn't for 4 days. The ER said it was an allergic reaction and to give her Benadryl. I said I would have if I knew how much to give a 19 lb kid! They don't make baby Benadryl! So she wrote down the dosage and said to follow up with our ped. when we got back to town. Well I gave DD the dose and she slept for 5 hours! I started cutting back on the dose and when we got home my BIL(a doctor) was in town (we couldn't get ahold of him before going to the ER). He said the amount the ER dr told us to give her was WAY too much for 19lbs! He was glad I cut her back otherwise she would have slept through Christmas!!!!

I joked that she just wanted to be decorated for Christmas. She ended up with just one BIG hive all over her entire body head to toe. She had it for a month! Lucky for us she wasn't itchy!

The same thing happened with my daughter. She had amoxicillan a few times before she had an allergic reaction.
She also broke out in hives and was vomiting.
Scary stuff. I hope your daughter is feeling much better! Good luck with the ENT. All three of my kids have had their tonsills and adenoids out. 2 because of Strep/Tonsillitis and Sleep Apnea. My daughter had severe
Sleep Apnea. It makes a world of difference if that is the route you have to take.:goodvibes

This happened to us too. My son was 6y when he had the reaction. He had been on amox. several times before. What really scared us was that he was having difficulty breathing. :scared1: We ran to the ER and the gave him a shot of epinephrin. Within a few minutes he was seriously bouncing off the walls. He was dancing and all kinds of craziness. The allergy was a truly scary experience but his reaction to the epi shot was downright funny. I'm glad your little one os OK.

I know it can be very scary!
I hope she is feeling better now!:confused3

Believe it or not, she's fine now! She's acting like her bouncy, high energy, determined self with no notice of how itchy and bad she was feeling last night.

How scary!! I hope your DD is feeling better today:flower3:

Thanks for that info - I would have thought that if she was allergic, you would have known after the first dose! I'm so glad she's okay now and feeling better!

Thanks for letting us know! Hope your DD is feeling much better, and I hope you get somewhere with your ENT Dr.

I'm so glad your dd is okay, and I know how scary an allergic reaction can be. The same thing happened to our dd when she was 2 after two rounds of amoxicillin. She got hives, her ankles started to swell, and she spiked a fever. A trip to the ER and several days of prednisone did the trick (although that prednisone is crazy stuff--our dd was wired for a week!). Thanks for letting others know to be aware of this possibility!

I developed my penicillin allergy on day 8 of a 10 day course! How odd is that? It goes to show that you can develop an allergy at any time.

MaddieMouse had hives all over her body back at Christmas, the only thing we could think that she'd had different was a cookie with pecans in it, but she'd also been sick. The pediatrician at Urgent Care told us it was somehow related to her asthma flare-up (?). I know how alarming it is to see something like that on your baby!

I'm glad she's feeling better now.
