They're there because DIS boards won't let you use lots of spaces in between smileys (you only seem to be allowed to use 1).

So, in order to make pictures, you have to use lines instead, make them white and hope people are using the default DISboards colour scheme

Mum says she doesn't understand and small world can't even see the lines in the first place, so you're not left out.

The easiest way I can explain them is they have to be there, otherwise the picture doesn't work.

Highlighting the pictures might help. Then you can see where the underscores are.

You need the underscores to space out the icons, as in html the spaces dissappear.
