I just have to add here, the silver lining for us is that while the in laws don't especially love the girls, they are completely competent about caring for them. I never worry that they'll get into trouble or get hurt.
Yes, they'll be starved for affection, they'll be served food they hate and ordered to clean their plates, grandma will "lose" the phone so they can't call us to say goodnight, but they're safe and protected, at least.
I actually think I'd have a lot more trouble with a MIL who (and I've read a bunch of stories here) who just doesn't seem to have any clue about how to keep a kid safe....
