Do your luggage tags openly show your address?

Wondering because.....we never travel and I spent a couple hours making our special Disney luggage tags and laminating them (I'm anal - I know) and now my DH tells me that it isn't safe to travel showing our address, especially with 3 daughters and that "they" will know where we live and that we aren't home. Is he being paranoid? Or am I an idiot? :confused3

What do you put on your tags?

The chances that someone would read your luggage tag out of the thousands that pass through most airport personnell hands daily I think would be nil. Also, if your address is not on there if you were to lose it, how would it get back to you? You could put just a phone number, but you will not be home to answer the phone.

We travel in the states and Mexico quite often and have never even thought about that.

To appease him you might use his business card instead.

I have wondered about this too...got my lime green Mickey heads from Home Depot and plan on using them for luggage tags. What about if you put your name and cell phone #? Then if they get lost you can be contacted on your cell phone. Do you think that would work better or is it best to have you home address on their too?

For my luggage tags, I put my work address and cell phone number instead of home address. That way, if my suitcase happens to go missing and is returned, it'll get returned to work where there's always someone to sign for it.

My work people know where I live and where I am if they need to get in touch with me and it's much safer than putting your home address on.

I would never call you an idiot, but it is a bit extreme to be concerned that you put yourself at any sort of risk by having your name and address on luggage tags. The ticket agents and rampers handling your luggage are much too busy and disengaged to even care.

It's also important to realize that you name, address, phone number, and construction details about your house (electrical wiring, etc.) are on file for PUBLIC EXAMINATION at your local city/town hall. Then again, I see you're in Canada so things may be different there / De l'autre côté, je vois que vous êtes au Canada ainsi les choses peuvent être différentes là.

Wanna know something even scarier? If someone is walking or driving on your street and they see you outside your house, THEY KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE!!!

We've used a business card on luggage for years (with cell phone written in). Don't think it's a huge risk to use home, but there are so few airports that match claim tickets to actual bags that it's just a small added precaution for us....

I think he's being a bit paranoid. Someone

who knew you and was targeting you personally would know where you live (or could find out by following you around). A stranger who's looking to commit a "crime of opportunity" wouldn't bother to follow up on you later -- he'd be looking to steal the suitcase today.

We use my husband's laminated buisness cards as luggage tags. We don't do this because we're afraid of criminals tracking us down through our luggage; we do it because if they were lost, the airlines would call during business hours to find the owners.

In addition to the luggage tag on the outside of the suitcase, I suggest that you also lay a large typewritten page on top of your clothes (inside the suitcase) listing your name, cell phone, and your hotel address/phone. If your luggage tags happen to be torn off and the airline opens your luggage searching for clues, they'll find your name staring right at them.

We always either use DH's business card or I just put our names & cell phone #'s. Having an address listed isn't really necessary, IMO

I always use my business card... besides the fact that it is a bit more 'discreet' than avertising your home address, it also is a better address to use if your luggage is lost and needs to be shipped back to you. Chances are, no one will be home when it gets there!!! A lot more likely to have someone at the office to accept the 'delivery'.

Also, it's not usually the folks who work for the airlines/TSA that you have to worry about at airports, it is other people who just happen to be standing near where you are.

People became aware of this risk after there were incidents of several people on a particular cruise having their homes burglarized while they were gone. It came to light that there were people checking the addresses on the luggage tags at the airport when big piles of luggage were tagged and set aside for cruise passengers. They would call an accomplice who would then burglarize the home. The problem is not as severe now that baggage is more tightly controlled in airports, but it does still happen.

We always use pocket-type tags. Outbound, the tag has our last name and first initial, and the name of our resort. When we arrive, I take out that top card, and there is a business card underneath. Both cards have the wireless phone numbers on them.

Use the tags!!!!!!! We had our luggage get lost they are worth the short time they are on for someone to see.
