6 months ago, I had a pap done....it came back with abnormal results, an abnormal growth of squamous cells on the cervical area. My doctor said this is completely normal and that for the time being, we would be doing another pap in 6 months, instead of the usual 12 months, to see if we get the same result. Well, I just had it done last week and got the results today...The cells have not mutated, but they are still present. He said that from here on, they will have to refer me to the cancer clinic, and I will have to get a coploscopy. He said that this is normal, and I shouldn't be freightened. It's just a precautionary measure they take to ensure that the cells don't multiply and to take care of them before it could potentially become something problamatic. Needless to say, I am terrified...I am turning 29 in a couple of days, and this just scares me to death. So many things are going through my head, I don't know where to begin.

I am curious though....how many people do get this done? What is it like? Has anybody else ever experienced this?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated?

My sister and sister in law and a good friend all had this done. They were one time procedures and they never had problems again. Don't worry! Just get it done!

I know 2 women who have had it done, both are fine. One was already menopausal, the other went on to successfully have a child. Hope your test results turn out fine.

I know a couple of people who have had this done - one was only about 20 years old at the time. She was back to work within a day or 2. No more problems since - she just keeps having her regular check-ups. From what I've read, it normally takes years for cervical cancer to develop. Take care.

Although it's slightly invasive, it's really the equivalent of having a mole removed to ward off skin cancer - don't worry about it. I think I was 22 or 23 when I had mine done. It IS scary when you're facing it - but the alternative is scarier IMO.

I've had it done many times. Every one of my female friends has gone through it as well. I was terrified the first time but the doctor was great and talked me through it. It didn't hurt once I was able to relax, and I had no pain afterwards.

To me it kind of felt like a pap test, only longer.

Not to alarm you but my mother had this done and had her cervical cancer removed this way and has had checkups every 6 months for the last 10 years and all has been fine so after the procedure you should be all clear. I know this sounds hollow but don't worry it will be just fine.

my girlfriend had it done about 2yrs ago, and she has gone in every 6 months for a follow up. So far so good... She said it wasn't a big deal.

I would just get it done and not worry abou it too much.
all the best !!

Sending you some  Jolene. I think it's a precautionary measure that's worth taking. I had a friend who had this done when she was about 22, and still fine now, almost 20 years later. :goodvibes

Thank you everyone....I'm not so tense about the whole thing now. Understanding that it is a precautionary measure and so many have had it done kind of relieves me....Thanks again everyone!!!

I haven't been through it myself but know someone who has. Once the procedure was over all other paps have come back fine.

Sending you some feel better vibes.

I had this procedure done several years back and then I had the LEEP done. Both were quick procedures done right in my GYN's office and the results were good = normal Pap's since.

Good luck and don't worry about a thing. It's FAR more common than you think!

I had the same situation about 4 years ago. I had to have 2 colposcopy exams, about 6 months apart, as well as regular pap tests. In the end the doctor said she couldn't find anything to be alarmed about, but did give me the choice of having some layers of cells burned away by a laser. She didn't think it was necessary for me to have it done, but gave me the option anyway. That is the usual option for women, if they find some more mutated cells they do a day procedure using the laser. There is another way too, although I can't remember what it is. The colposcopy was just like a long pap, and was more uncomfortable, however I did see some women in the nurse's room after who had a rough time and had to sit and wait for a while before they could get dressed and go home. I was fine, just letting you know that there are a few people who might have a harder time with it. Good luck, and don't worry! Having this done now is much better than ignoring the pap results!

I too have had it done and gone on to have the LEEP as well as laser surgery. That was more than a decade ago and I've been fine since.

I hope all goes well for you.

i've also had this done plus the LEEP procedure.

you'll be just fine.....
