Hello All,

For anyone who WON'T make it to Disney this summer and is interested in Southern Ontario - ask away.

We did:

  • Parliament Hill in Ottawa
  • Canada's Wonderland
  • Hippo Tours in Toronto
  • Marineland
  • Maid of the Mist & Clifton Hill in Niagara Falls
  • African Lion Safari in Cambridge
Stayed at:

  • Super 8 (Vaughn) in Toronto
  • Best Western Fallsview in Niagara Falls

Cast of characters consisted of self, DH, DS (12) and DH's DD and DSL and DGK's (5 & 1). Let me know if you'd like any tips.

Can you please tell me about Clifton Hill in Niagra Falls please? I have a DS 13 who I would like to take down there for a weekend and am wondering how much everything costs and if he would enjoy the attractions.

Did you do the Haunted House, Ripleys??? And how was the hotel and how much did you pay? Any and all info would be appreciated.

As well, I would like to know how Marineland was? My DS and I went when he was little but he does not remember. I don't know if he would find it entertaining at his age?

Thanks

Stephanie

We were just at Marineland this weekend. I would think your 13 year old would love it. There's so much more there than there used to be. A lot more rides than I remember. There's so much to do at Clifton Hill, but everything is soooo expensive. Even if you can't afford to stay at one of the hotels near Clifton Hill, there are shuttles provided at 99% of the hotels. We always stay at the Ramada Coral Inn. Clean with 2 pools & right across from the outlets, but about a 10 min shuttle to Clifton Hill. We did Great Wolf Lodge in Feb & that was really good. I know they have deals on right now because I keep getting emails from them since we stayed there.

Hi Brighteyes,

I agree with the previous poster's opinion that the Clifton Hill attractions are very expensive - we bled money the two days we were in NF. That said, there are lots of things a 13 year old boy would like: Ripley's Believe It or Not and Ripley's Motion Experience, Frankenstein's Castle, WWF Smackdown, Imax, Skylon Tower, Indoor Skydiving, Go Carts and probably dozens more. If you go, don't ignore the classics like the Maid of the Mist and the Aerocar over the Falls. Each of these cost between $10.00 and $50.00 per person and your DS will be charged as an adult. For activities and entertainment you will easily spend $500.00 in a weekend (not including food or lodging).

As for Marineland, we had a very good time there (much better than Canada's Wonderland). There are 7 or 8 really great thrill rides (including an awesome rollercoster and topple-tower as well as the Sky Screamer drop tower), and a whole bunch of tamer ones. They also have a giant arcade with video and virtual reality games in addition to the aquariums, whale & dolphin shows and a beluga feeding experience. The price for Marineland was $45.00/day p.p. plus tax.

Be aware that if you plan to go on a weekend, hotel rates will be much higher than during the week. We got an excellent rate at the Best Western Fallsview on their website as a pre-paid advance purchase. We liked it just fine for what we paid ($70.00/night). Weekend rates right now are about $150.00/night and you might do better somewhere else. Summer is high season and the rates at all hotels are about double what they will be between October and May. Lundy's Lane will have more affordable hotels than the Fallsview district, but it's (IMO) not a walkable distance from the action. Be prepared to walk or shuttle to Clifton Hill where it is impossible to find parking, and to the Falls where it costs $13.00/day to park.

Overall, I'm glad we visited, but we won't be doing so again anytime soon.

Just a few things to add....hope this might help Brighteyes in planning her trip to Niagara!

We just returned from five night/six days at the Falls.

If you are going to do Clifton Hill attractions, consider getting one of the combo passes. There's a great one that includes admission to the Skywheel (which I highly recommend), either Dinosaur or Cosmic mini golf (both tons of fun....particularly Dinosaur Golf, which has some great photo opportunities), tokens for the Great Canadian Midway, Movieland Wax Musuem (another fun place with great photo opportunities), and tickets to the Ghostblasters & FX Theatre rides (cheesy but will be liked by a 13 year old). Buying the pass will save you $30 per person. The Niagara Parks Commission sells a similar pass for their attractions (Maid of the Mist, Journey Behind the Falls, White Water Walk, & Niagara Fury), and Ripley's also offers a combo pass (the Believe it or Not Museum, Moving Theatre, & Tussauds Wax Museum....works out to a buy 2, get 1 free savings). So discounts CAN be found, you just have to figure out what you want to do and start hunting from there.

Lots of coupons available online as well. There are a couple of additional attractions booklets on Clifton Hill which offer coupons for various attractions, plus the ttractions Ontario website has some to download and print. A $1 or $2 off here and there may not seem like much, but sure adds up after doing 10 different things in a couple of days!

Also, the price that ronandannette quoted for Marineland is for a season's pass. The one-day price is $39.95 plus tax. The season's pass is a great deal as the extra $5 allows you to come back as many times as you want for the rest of the season. We spent 2 part-days at Marineland with the passes (June 29th and 30th) and walked right on EVERYTHING. Absolutely no crowds whatsoever!! I don't know whether we got lucky, whether its the state of the economy, or ??? . But man, it was way less busy than we expected. And your 13 year old would LOVE it there. The two 13-year-olds we had with us had a ball. Feeding the belugas is an extra $8 per person, and fish/bear/deer feed will also cost you as well ($2 or $3 each time).

We also had no problems getting parking in the Clifton Hill and Falls areas (and we were even there on the July 1st holiday). Some lots are pricier than others, so choose wisely if cost is a concern.

Brighteyes, one reasonably-priced hotel you may want to consider is the Travelodge on Clifton Hill. They offer packages that include some attractions you have spoken of (Marineland, Clifton Hill, etc.). They have an outdoor pool, a fridge and microwave in every room, they are located right on Clifton Hill (walk to the Falls!!), parking is included, and breakfast is included at Ruby Tuesdays (and its not bad....we stayed here last year and had no complaints). They were also pretty friendly folks to deal with.
