OT- How hard is it to get around San Diego?

My family was looking into this destination so we can do something different other than Disney. There seems to be a lot of things to do but my mom just thought of the fact of transportation. She's not sure if my dad will be willing to drive in the traffic there. We're planning on going in January so I don't know if that will make difference. Do you think it's doable traffic if he's drove in other cities like Pittsburgh?

I think your dad will be fine driving in San Diego. Everyone who has come to visit me from other cities hasn't had a problem. The major issue is that there's SO much traffic and it takes a long time to get anywhere. Off peak times aren't too bad but rush hour comes to a stand still on the 5. It's not really dangerous when that happens, just really boring

I've found that other places have worse drivers, even if there is much less traffic (people who run red lights, don't signal etc). January isn't a major tourist month either so that may help. Driving is pretty much your only option. The busses take forever.

I agree with the pp - your dad should have no trouble and the biggest issue is the traffic - but it's only at certain times (unlike LA where it is ALL the time!).

I try not to leave the house till 8:30 - 9:00 no matter where I am headed and usually find very little traffic. Most tourist things don't open till 9 or 10 anyways. Likewise, coming home, I try to be on the road around 3 to again avoid the traffic.

When you know more, post again and we can give you advice....

My DH and I went to San Diego a couple of years ago and we found it extremely easy to get around. I live in Boston and this is so much easier.

DH and I went to San Diego a few years ago and we found it was very easy to get around. We live in NJ and our traffic along with Philly/NY traffic is much worse, and much more dangerous too. We thought the west coast drivers were much less aggressive as well, compared to here.
