I know this is a Disney thread but I am not too sure where to turn. I am serioulsy thinking about changing my job. Right now I work in childcare and would like to get out of that field all together. Here's the problem, I have been doing it for over 8 years and have NO IDEA what else I would be go at, or what I would like to do. I was thinking something along the lines of either events planning or promotions. I was just wondering what are some of the jobs on here that you guys do...maybe I'll get a few ideas. Thanks in advance.

Hi ~ Good for you! It's increasingly rare that people GO FOR IT! The business that I am in is PERFECT for me. It hardly seems like a 'business' because I love it so much. A turning point for me was when I read, "if you DO what you LOVE you WILL make a living at it." It is sooooooo true! My whole life has threads of magic and mystism ~ for a long time I did not recognize as SIGNS leading to my current path. The things that I liked DOING centred around Spirit and Art. When I say Spirit, I don't mean man-made religions, I mean that deep down Spirituality that calls the real you all the time, but you don't answer because the truth can appear scary. In 1998 I lost 80 lbs and suddenly found myself in aerobic school. My only child, at the time, started kindergarten September 1998. October 1998, I was working as a fitness instructor teaching several classes a week. That worked out great! I took many new classes as well. I was very interested in art and yoga. Thru word-of-month, an art school heard I was interested in art so they hired me to teach art classes to children. I've been teaching fitness and art classes since 1998. In 1999, I got preggy with my second child. Jumping around in fitness classes became increasingly difficult, so I opted to stick with yoga. I called a Yoga school about pre-natal yoga classes. Once I told them that I teach fitness classes, they offered me free yoga teacher training [usually about $3000 tuition]. I jumped on it and they hired me. I got to teach yoga, art and fitness classes and bring my kids along whenever I wanted to. Around that same time my dad has major heart surgery. The stress started adding the pounds back. Even thou I gained a ton of weight back and my dad recently died, I find that I am at peace. The paths that unfold for me are perfect for me. I was lucky to READ THE SIGNS FROM THE UNIVERSE and follow the things that I love to do. Now, I teach yoga, art, fitness, Reiki, Tarot, Meditation, I make and sell crystal and hemp jewelry. I turn down classes and offers because BALANCE is essential for me. Family comes first. I work when I want ~ and again, it's hardly work because I love it so. So, my advice to you is: Meditate and let your new career come to you. Namaste, Sandra

PS: If you find yourself looking for good books: try anything by Caroline Myss, Marianne Williamson, Deepak Chopra, Thomas Moore, Jack Kornfield, Gary Zukav, Dr. Stephen Hawking. Also, read THE ALCHEMIST. As far as New Age fiction goes, it's way better than THE CELESTINE PROPHECY.

I'm a mortgage broker. It can be very stressful at times, however, I work for myself ( independant broker in a national company) and the ability to set my own schedule while my husband was in Afghanistan for 6 months was a blessing. I was very stressed out over a file I was working on ( mortgage closed today, thank heaven!) and said "Remind me how much money I make, and how great it is that I got to work from home for the summer!"

Some days I think I should save my sanity and go work at Tim Hortons, or something like that. Other days, I am really able to help people starting out in their first home or starting over after "credit challenges" and I know I am where I need to be. I feel like I make a difference. Good luck with your choice.

I'm kind of in the same boat-I stay home with my kids right now but an aiming to be back to work next Sept. as my little guy will begin grade one in 2005. So all along I have been telling myself I should go back to school then and get my teaching certificate as it would let me be with the kids for holidays, weekends etc...BUT now I am finding that (actually I have always known this)that my true passion is travel planning for myself and others(anyone want to get to hawaii cheap I know all the routes and places to stay-we go all the time on a budget)I am torn because my first priority is my kids and family and I know I am going to have to make a desicion soon an I need to apply to teachers college before December. I guess I am telling you this to let you know that you are not the only one and it is really hard to know or find a job that is going to be one that you wake up and are eager to do. If your background is with kids, do you want to continue along that line? Do you want to get corporate because you could always pitch yourself as a consultant to many firms who manufacture kids stuff. Do you want your own business? Kids at-home-party-services are hot right now, perhaps you could do a Disney type one(watching out for copyright infringement of course). Go to www.monster.com, and browse to see what types of things you are drawn to. I had a friend in university who drafted his own curriculum for a Japanese culture class, approached a community collega and ended up teaching what he loved to people who were very eager to learn! Good luck, I know how frusterating this is...:wave2:

This will probably not help you but my chosen profession is Nursing. I have been a nurse for twenty years now and I still love it. When I went into nursing it was with the thought that if I ever got married I could still work part time and be with the kids. Well I do have children but I have never worked part time. After my initial training I went to George Brown College in TO and took an Operating Room Certificate course. It was the best thing I ever did. After working at Toronto General for a couple of years as an OR nurse I moved to North Carolina and worked at a huge Trauma Center. I now work as the Surgical and Specialty Services Supervisor at a small specialty hospital. I wouldn't change my career path for anything. I know alot of nurses are not happy - and with the shortage in Canada and the US alot of times we are overworked. I still love it. Good luck in what ever profession you chose. It is hard to go to work and not enjoy what you do.

I don't want to pop your bubble, but I would strongly suggest against event planning/marketing/promotions unless you have excellent networking in these areas already set up. It is very difficult to break into. I have worked in recruiting for the last several years in an employment agencies and have interviewed countless people who have paid large amounts to go to school, urged on by the schools with the lure of "lots of jobs out there" that have never been able to find a job in that area. Agencies are a very good way to experience different work environment, and try out different jobs on a short term basis. Even if you have no experience in an office, many agencies will place you in entry level temporary positions which will allow you to get some experience and begin to move up the ladder. Good luck! I applaud your desire to strike out and make a change.
