We'll be going this weekend and just wondering if there's any good restaurants nearby. We were there when it first opened in fall of 2005 and there wasn't much else in the area though we didn't really try that hard.

Dh was disappointed in the food at GWL, or at least the quality for the outrageous price. (Makes WDW seem dirt cheap.) Cheese on a $10 burger was an extra $2 and they charged extra for coffee at the breakfast buffet.:headache: He griped for over a year about it and finally agreed to return b/c the kids had such a great time in the waterpark.

This time I plan to bring a cooler of drinks and more snacks, maybe even oatmeal for a quick breakfast in the room but dh likes a full breakfast.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

The food is still pretty bad, I'd eat outside too:)

A few weeks ago the roof fell in, over the dining area at GW... I'm sure it's fixed by now, but you might want to call to confirm that.

If you're looking for breakfast, there are several diners along RT 611. Make a right outside of the GW lodge and there's the Scotrun Diner. If you go towards Tannersville, there are a couple more along 611. There's also a Friendly's in Tannersville.
If you make a left when leaving GW and go to the light in MT. Pocono, make a left onto 940 and go less than a mile, there's a Perkin's restaurant there.

There are some chain restaurants in Bartonsville, about 10 minutes from GW. Get on 80E and get off the Bartonsville exit (only a couple of miles, 3rd exit)... go through the light into the strip mall there. There's a Red Robin, a Longhorn Steakhouse and a Chilis. Further down in Stroudsburg, there is a Garfields ,and a Roadhouse Steakhouse at the Stroud Mall. Also a Ruby Tuesday across the road.

For non-chain restaurants, Pangea is in Scotrun. It's kind of a 'world' restaurant. American, Oriental, Indian too. Good food, a bit pricey, but not more than GW! The Pocono Brewery.. it's not 'bar-like', it's very nice. They're the closest to GW that are pretty decent.

Have you been to Camelback beach and waterpark? It's not far from GW, you might want to take a look. It's really pretty nice. You'd never go back to GW!..lol.

Have fun!

Thanks for all the info! We are heading up for the first time in June. Looking forward to it but was worrying about food options...

Perkins for breakfast sounds good!!

I haven't even started planning for this trip.

Do you know if there are portable cribs you can ask for?

Pizza delivery to the room? Might be good for a quick dinner then back to the water park?

What time does it close at night?

Thanks again!

Thanks for this great info. Ds loves Friendly's and dh love Longhorn Steakhouse. I will call to check about the roof. Any reason why it fell?
I will print your info when I get home from work.
Thank you so much!!

There is also a place called Big Daddys when you make a left. We ate there a few monthly ago while at the casino.

Here are some reports on the collapse, I think it was finally determined it was a structural issue:

As the above poster said, there is a Big Daddy's not far up the road in Swiftwater. I haven't been there in years, but unless it's changed, it was a southwestern themed restaurant.

There are many restaurants overall in the area. You shouldn't have a problem finding a place to eat.

KelleyD... I've never stayed overnight at GW. I live here, so I've been there to eat several times. I can honestly say I have never had a good meal there! First time I was so disapointed because I expected more! Then I gave it another chance (anyplace can have a bad night), and another disapointment. Even my dd wouldn't eat the kid's stuff! And, two different times, friends "had to try it"...lol. I went along, and no surprise, no one liked the food. Those times we used a Restaurant.com gift certificate when we were able to buy them for 70% off, or we wouldn't have even gone.
We've been to the waterpark there.. and it's nice. It was nicer when it first opened though. We went last year and it seemed pretty dirty in the area. It was a slow time so maybe they didn't have as much staff? And, the water was COLD! I couldn't stay in, and even dd had enough after only an hour or so. Good thing we didn't pay for it or I would have been upset at the money wasted.
The game room was fun. The prizes are better than most game rooms I think. Nicer quality. And they have that scavenger hunt-like game with the crystals, where you have to hunt all over the resort. But, the wand/topper and stuff you have to buy, and the fee to play comes out to almost $50! That would be PER KID!. We were only there for the waterpark and thank goodness my dd had no interest in that anyway. But I had priced it because I was curious.
There's a pizza hut and starbucks in the lobby if you wanted pizza (or coffee:)). I would guess some local places might deliver.

I can't say what time it closes at night, and I don't know about cribs. If you call their main number you can get that info.

We have eaten at the Scotrun diner and find their food to be very appetizing and not pricey. I personally love the chicken salad. Have a nice time.

If you like a good steak try the Tannersville Inn, it's right on 611. The porterhouse is one of the best I have had.

We just went to Great Wolf 2 weekends ago, so much fun! The food was AWFUL! I ended up having to complain at the lunch buffet and was not charged. Go to Ham & Eggs in the Pan!! If you make a left ouf of the resort, it's a mile or so up on the right. AWESOME breakfast!! They also have a fridge and microwave so you can bring some quick fare to eat during waterpark breaks. Have fun!!

we has breakfast sat the Scotrun Diner each day...very inexpensive for the 5 of us...breakfast food was very good & staff friendly. We also had dinner at the Pocono Brewery and the quantites were large & much much better than the food at GWL. The only good thing about the GWL buffet is that there are a lot of packaged type foods (Smuckers uncrustables, yougurt, cut up fruit in bags, applesauce, etc ) that you may wish to bring back to the room with you for lunch..and no, I did not feel the least bit guilty after the prices they charged for the awful food!
