OT-Do teachers get vacation?

As a teacher I can answer this from my expereince. We do have the same vacations as the children ( yes it seems like a lot of time off) I am off this week and I am grading papers and planning for the week we go back but that is my choice, I would rather be in WDW. We do get personnel days 3.5 a year according to our contract. So we have to go when it is crowded and hot!:lmao:

I have the following:

10 sick days to be carried over if not used..
3 of those can be used for family sick days

1 personal day for whatever
1 emergency day
3 1/2 hour early leaves

NOW...my dd just had pneumonia. I was off all week. They told me I had to take unpaid days because of the contract. Should I have just called myself in sick and lied? Since they all come from the same bank, I am perplexed on WHY they do that.

I never take sick for myself...had 20 by the begin of this school year. But...I have three kids. I stay home with them when they are sick.

This puts me in a tough spot as the family days DO NOT carry over...so I still ended up with two unpaid days last week.

I will take my personal day for my WDW trip in the fall. Me and dh for 5 nights.

That means I will take 4 unpaids.

I did that in 2005 but will not do it every year probably...

I would call it summer.

and you would be wrong.

People have a misconception that we get paid for the summers. In all actuality my contract is a 10 month contract. NOW... some choose to split that up into 12 mos pay period but we are not actually paid for that time.

Many teachers I know have jobs in the summers to pad their bottom line. Many coach or do extra work at school or sporting events.

I'm a teaching assistant in California. I am contracted to work 180 days per year and I get paid for those days in 10 equal monthly payments. We do have vacation pay that is factored into our checks, however, we are not allowed to take vacation days (if that makes any sense)! Basically, vacation pay is extra money that they give us in lieu of the ability to take an actual vacation. We do get 10 personal days per year that don't carry over until the next year (use them or lose them). We also acrue sick days based on our years of service (I currently have 10 sick days that I'm eligible to take).

I will say that our holiday and break times are very liberal, considering the fact that we don't work during the summer. My district is off this entire week for winter break. My husband works for a major corporation and he didn't even get today off for President's Day. We get 3 days for Thanksgiving, 2 weeks for holiday break, 1 week in Feb for winter break and 1 week in April for spring break. We also get the usual holidays off (Labor Day, MLK, Veteran's Day, Memorial Day).

Our family chose to take our WDW trip the week before Christmas since the kids and I had the time off already.

I teach in Ontario, Canada. We are not allowed to use our sick days (we don't have personal days) for vacation time. I can only travel during school holidays. I love my job, so I don't mind, but it would be nice to travel during cheaper times.

I KNOW I will get flamed for this but here goes.....

I read about lots of people who think it is OK to go to WDW during the school year. They take their kids out of school to go during "off season". I didn't post any replies although I agreed with very few of the posters. Here are my questions to them....Would it be OK with them if I took a 7-10 days off during the "off season" to visit WDW? I am a teacher. How would they feel if I left their children with a substitute?

Well, we do get personal days and I wouldn't hesitate to take days off to go to WDW if we didn't have our fall break. They are mine to do what I like with. I have a perfectly capable co-teacher who can handle the class. Teachers need a break besides summer, IMHO.

As far as summer being considered vacation days for teachers, if you take days off your work and are not paid for them, do you consider them vacation days? I get paid for 190 days, and just have the pay spread out over 12 months. I work for more than 190 days(workdays, conferences, workshops, classroom prep, work week, etc) I would say I work around 210 days out of 365(10 workdays, 5 days of workweek, 3 days of workshops, and 2 days of conferences). If you figure out how many days the average worker works, I doubt it would be more than a few weeks difference. A few UNPAID weeks. And I work 8-4 with no break, which is the same 8 hours as most working people(no specials for the whole class)

Don't get me wrong--I LOVE teaching! I wouldn't trade it for anything. I just get a little tired of people thinking we have all this time off. Truly, our work never ends.

I would be glad you are not my child's teacher. :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1

Maybe not 10 days- that is a lot. However, I AM a teacher and I will take my 3 DS out of school in May to make a long weekend. This is how we chose to do it for various reasons. As for my the teachers of my own children- 2 of the 3 of them alread took off a week for a trip to Disney this year and they both had very capable subs who taught the curriculum- ( and I know the curriculum because I am teaching the same grade as 1 DS) I did not hear any complaints from other parents and obviously the admininstrative staff had no problem with it either. I would never get mad at my children's teachers for taking a small vacation during the school year unless they were absent a great deal. Anyways this is just my thoughts.

My hubby teaches at a tech school, and he gets the month of July off. He also gets Christmas break, Spring break, MLK day, one day of Fall break, etc. He gets some sick days and personal days. We vacation during either Spring break or the month of July, depending on where we go. He can't leave his students for long periods during a regular school week.

I get 10 sick days
3 personal days
3 illness in the family days
1 death of other day
I only take off to care for my family.

I am contracted for 180 days payable over 10 months.
Yes I am off when school is closed.
No I do not get paid for the summer

I would never dream of taking a vacation on school time nor would I take my children out of school to go to WDW.

We go each year when school is out.
It may be at the more crowded times...but it's better than not going.
Fortunately my corporate world husband is able to arrange his schedule around our days off.

Fellow Teachers,
How many of you have dragged yourselves in just to make sure you have the day available to care for your sick children when they are home?????

That would be me. In fact my kids have been home all week, but my DH has been home with them. I think I am getting what t hey have, but unless I am on death's door I will save my sick days in case I need them for the spring when DH goes back to work.

Boy would I love to tour Disney in the weeks before Christmas, or at Halloween, or in uncrowded January, but I am a teacher so it's spring breaks and the summer for my family and me. Heck, I can't even take the Monday after a vacation off so I am always stuck with huge air fares. Yet people seem to have no problem yanking their kids out of my class for 2 weeks because they got a "great deal" on a Disney trip.:headache: By the way, looking forward to my August trip:banana: and yes I do love my job.

I go to WDW every May also, and my class always has a very capable sustitute....our school's former reading specialist. She really knows what she's doing. She is the one that trained all of us teachers with our school's present reading program!

NY teacher

5 personal days. Can't be used before/after a school holiday. They roll over to sick days if you don't use them.

12-14? Sick days. I don't know the exact number b/c I never use them all up and they bank from year to year. Sick days before or after a holiday require a doctor's note.

I know some teachers use their personal days to take a long weekend here and there, but I don't know anyone that would take a week long vacation (M-F) during the school year.

Actually, in my building it is very difficult to take time off at all. Even though contractually I get that many days we are under a LOT of pressure from the principal to not use them.

Last year the principal did let me miss the last day of school though b/c I got a good deal on a flight...but there were no students on the last day.
