OT-Do teachers get vacation?

What doesn't seem reasonable to me is that you can't save up vacation days (or sick days either, my school let you have a maximum of 10 sick days on the book at any given time) for things like maternity leave.

I think most companies don't allow you to save up your vacation/sick time. You get 10 vacation days a year. If you don't use it, you lose it. You get 5 sick days a year. If you don't use it, you lose it. The longer you've worked for a company, the more days you get. For example, after 10 years, you get 15 vacation days a year. But you still don't get to carry over. I have seen companies that will allow a small buildup of sick time, but never vacation time.

I'm hoping to start the process of adoptiong #2 soon -- and will be in the same boat.

Wouldn't FMLA cover adoptions? I was thinking it would, but maybe not. It might be worth checking into. Of course, FMLA doesn't mean you get paid time off, just time off.

You are kidding right? I think it is called June, July and August. Spring break and Christmas break, Thanksgiving long weekend, and sometimes fall break.
If so, can I move to your state. :lmao:

In my state, school gets out in the middle of June and teachers work an extra few days after. Then teachers report in the middle of August for the next school year.

I'm not sure this is true? Maybe just in our area, but most places here, including the district I work in and other major employers roll over their time. Otherwise, you would be in a real fix if you needed surgery and only had the days you were issued for that year? Or maternity leave? I'm sure there are jobs where you can't but I would think the majority allow it. At least up to a certain point. Of course, how lucky can my DH be? He works at the local university and because of his grade (how they level the jobs) he has unlimited sick time. Within reason of course. But it is nice when the kids are sick.

I think that's a big presumption. I know the company I work for allows the buildup of vacation days up to a maximum amount of some figure (I don't know what that is, but I will never get to it, I like my work, but I also like my time off)

I actually can't imagine getting vacation time anyway because when we do not go to work, we have to have detailed sub plans for our classes. We also have to correct all the work from when we are out. Even during maternity leave I had to do a ton of work before I could be out. It's not worth taking time off. I rarely use my personal days.

I totally agree. It is such a pain to take a day off. Even when I am sick I still have to drive in to work to get the sub plans ready for the day.

Here is another version/comment:

In Canada, rules are VERY different. In my province, there are NO, yes I said NO, personal days. We are guarenteed 1 1/4 sick days per month which CANNOT be used toward at trip to WDW, to a maximum of 195 over our entire career. And guess what, if I finish with all of my sick days I get ....NOTHING!!!! So if my son is sick I will stay home. If I am sick-another story-much more work to prep for someone else that drag my sorry butt in and muddle through myself.

Just showing that things are always different. Oh and our (UNPAID) summer vacation begins June 27 and we are back August 27th. Contrary to popular belief, we arent paid for the summer. Our pay is spread out over 52 weeks instead of paying us through the summer.

Wow-this sounds like a vent. Its really not.:rotfl:

I worked for an insurance company. After 3 yrs service I had 20 days personal time/year plus holidays and could only roll over 20 days/yr. The personal days were for whatever vacation or sick days. My manager said we should never have more than 20 days to roll over at the end of the year. He said that it was a pay cut for us if we missed out on one of the days as our salary 'included' those days. I liked his attitude about time off!

In my district (Michigan) I get 10 days that I can use during the school year. I can be out a day here or there, but anything over 2 days requires a doctor's note or written permission from the district. They aren't about to pay a sub for a week, plus my salary, so I can scoot off to WDW for a week during off peak. (As a matter of fact, they have even denied some people a requested week for their honeymoon.) My days get used up for sick kids, "personal business" (dr appts, repairmen, etc.) and last year...I used all my days for my maternity leave.
DH would love to go off peak, but I can't...WDW in July it is!

I've worked for companies that work both ways. My current two firms offer no sick time for salaried employees, just time off. One allowed you to carry over just one week from year to year. This firm lets you have 300 hours on the books. The trend is to limit the number of carryover days - those sit as liabilities on the books which isn't good. (That 300 hours was a factor in our firms decision to enforce furlough - it was a vacation hording culture).

Yes, adoption is covered under FMLA (assuming you work for a company covered by FMLA) - but will very likely be unpaid.

I'm glad that's not the case where I work. I teach kindergarten in a city-funded day. After three months, all classroom staffs(teachers, assistants and aides) receive 30 vacation days a year. We can carry over unused days. However, we can't have more than 60 days. Anything more than 60 is converted to sick days. Our aides only work four hours a day, but they receive the same number of vacation days as the full time staff.

Even though we have 30 days per year, at my center the max we can use at one time is 20.

I'm a Florida teacher and we have 10 days per year, 6 of which can be used as personal days. Although it's uncommon, people do take off some days to take a trip during the school year. In fact, I'm taking 2 school days off next school year for a short trip to avoid the crowds. It's not frowned upon here unless you abuse the situation and you're not doing it all the time or for too long.

At DH's school, it is soooo frowned upon that when his friend (who was best man in our wedding) was getting married, and dh was invited to be in the wedding, he couldn't get off work to do it. Let me tell you, he was absolutely bummed out. The wedding would have made him miss the 2 last days of school before Xmas break, and "extending school vacations with personal days " is not allowed.

My wife is a college professor. She does NOT get vacation days. So, we are doomed to going to WDW in the <shugger> summer. We could potentially go in December, but we are usually ridiculously busy getting ready for Christmas.

I would have called in sick for those 2 days. (When you're sick, you're sick.)
That's what our school secretary tells us to do in cases like that.
In my county, we only need a doctor's note if we're out more than 3 consecutive days...and usually we're never asked to present it anyway.

In dh's district you have to have a dr's note if it's 3 consecutive sick days or if your sick day(s) extend a vacation or long weekend.

I am usually a real stickler for rules, but might have attempted the sick-day thing anyway if I were in dh's shoes...but he isn't like that -- VERY by the book.

As a teacher, I can say that I get 3 personal days each year and can use 3 of my sick days for personal reasons. When i request a personal day i need to say why (family event, funeral, wedding, graduation, doctor's appointment, sick child, etc) so with 3 kids, my personal days are always used for other things. I have used 4/6 already this year for things with my kids from seeing a performance of the Christmas play, to being a volunteer mom in class for the Valentine's Party. My in-law side of the family always wants us to stay a long weekend when we visit, but we do not becuase I am always afraid to use my personal day in case I might need them for the kids. So, while your friend may have them, they could be used for the same type of things that I use mine for. As teachers, we have a great work year, but really no flexibility for taking time off.

Former teacher now SAHM here. We got four personal days per year which couldn't be rolled over into the following year (but could get banked into sick days). Four personal days obviously cannot get you a whole week squeezed between two weekends. Personal days also couldn't be used prior to and following a holiday like Presidents' Day in order to get a whole week off.

As a parent it is very tempting to pull the kids out for a cheaper vacation. However, I know from experience how hard my kids' teachers work all year to give my kids a great education. So I don't do it out of respect for them since they aren't allowed such a luxury during the school year.

Nebraska teacher here.:teacher: We get 10 sick days 2 of which can be used for family illness and 2 personal days which like many others can't be tacked on to a holiday like today. If we have perfect attendance we get a small bonus and our personal days roll over to sick days. I currently have banked all of the sick days that I an allowed (90). I feel like others that planning for a sub is more of a hassle than going in. Of course I have taken off for family emergencies. We get Spring Break the first week of April now no matter when Easter is. This year it falls the week before but last year I went to WDW and was surprized by how light the crowds were. I look forward to snow days because they are the only "paid" days off we get besides holidays. People don't realizre that we don't get paid vacations. But, then I knew that when I decided to become a teacher so I plan my vacations accordingly.
