I fort of have the reverse problem. I'm home with the DD's all day and when DH gets home at 5:15 I immediately leave for work. DH is a mechanic so he has to get a shower as soon as he gets home. The girls are used to eating at 6pm. So I try to have something ready so DH doesn't have to fool with getting cleaned up and preparing a meal in less than 45 minutes.
I agree with the suggestion to cook ahead of time. Another idea is the crockpot. I have one of the fix it and forget it crockpot cookbooks - it is the 5 ingredient one. It is so simple since most of the recipies have just 5 ingredients or less and they are basic ingredients, nothing exotic which wouldn't work for my picky eaters. You might have to get up 10-15 minutes earlier in the morning to toss everything in the crockpot. But it would make your evening routing so much simplier. Your meal would be ready for you when you get home. You could start eating right away or spend a few minutes unwinding with your kids first.
