Skidaway State Park is a nice campground. It feels like you are out in the middle of nowhere. However, you are only five minutes from stores and resturants. The comfort stations are heated in the summer and air conditioned in the winter. They are kept clean. My husband and I spent a weekend there last month.
I am her husband and there are more camping areas iaround! There is Tybee Island, Ft McAllister, Bellaire Woods, and the KOA just off 95 at Richmond Hill.
Skidaway is wonderful because it is so close (on our camping trip, we went home twice to get things we forgot), but, so far out in the middle of no where.
If you need more info, PM me and I'll get you phone numbers and things.

I just sent you a PM as our family is also looking for campground info in Savannah GA for next Oct we will be there around the 17th or 18th of Oct. It will only be for a night maybe 2 tops. We want to be close to Hilton Head Island we are DVC members and own there so we want to make a day of it and drive up the hour or so to check out the resort.

Georgia parks are wonderful. I have stayed in a number of them, but, they are for the most part within 100 miles of Savannah.
Give me some parameters and I'll do what I can.
SC camping is a little different. I have only stayed in a few of the state parks there. Hunting Island is very nice (and not very far from Hilton head). Santee SP is also very nice and is on a very large lake for boating.
We are towing the wifes tent trailer down with us. so we will hjave a trailer for certain. Any info on a campground close to getting to HHI and accomodating a tent trailer would be awesome and welcome.
Tybee Island has a great looking campground. I've never actually camped there as we ususally get a condo when we go there, but I have walked by it often and it looks really nice. We are planning to camp there soon.
oohooh....just what I needed to know! which is better ,Tybee island camping or skidaway? we're in a tent, and visiting family in Savannah, looking to stay for about 4-5 days-
I've been reading reviews, and they're conflicting-we plan to go in late March
If you do camp at Tybee, make sure you eat at the North Beach Grill across the street from the Lighthouse. They have GREAT food.
No matter where you go in the Savannah Area in March, make sure you have some of Avon's Skin-so-Soft handy. Cut it 50% with water and splash it on liberally.
This will keep the Sand Gnats away. Sand Gnats are local bugs that come out when evening temps get between 60 and 70 (March and April). They are flying teeth.
