OT: Body odor in a young child?

Sounds normal. My kids were both 8 and 9 when we started using deodorant. My son uses axe and my daughter uses dial for girls. I like the smell of hers. :)

I wouldn't think twice noticing body odour at age 9 either, but it was unexpected at age 6. There is a big difference.

I started to get BO when I was 7. I did not learn until a few years ago (and I am 40) that I have late onset congenital adrenal hyperplasia. You might want to consider taking her to an endocrinologist. Ask them to do a blood test to check for the genetic mutation that causes it.

100 pounds is the average weight - it's obviously going to be different for different people.

Sorry but that is just bizarre. Is there a study that this number comes from? Or is this just when it happens to kids in your family so you think its the same for everyone else? This isn't true for my family.

I actually recall having read this, but can't remember where. I believe it was an older theory of what the tipping point was for puberty. More recent studies have focused on body fat percentages--that seems to be a more accurate predictor. But all are just based on averages

I would make an appointment with an endocrinologist. There could be a lot of different reasons for this. They would know the best and you would get definite answers. Good luck:)

Mine started with BO last summer at age 8..No other signs of puberty and we have always drank organic /hormone free milk and foods..Her pediatrician said as long as she has no other signs ( breast buds ,pubic hair) we are fine.Endocrine check up was fine..It wouldn't shock me though, my niece got her first period at age 10

We have always done organic milk and hormone free/grassfed/local meats for this reason and she was breastfed, so no formula either. And yet here we are!
Just goes to show that none of these things have any effect on when a kid starts puberty. There are more and more studies out showing that the organic hysteria is really not changing the long term outcome. Onset of puberty is controlled for the mosty part by genetics at this point, becuase we are all getting enough to eat. My DD is almost 10 and just beginning puberty. My mother in Law started puberty as an early 8 year old and had her period by 9 during WWII. So did her sisters. I didn't start until I was almost 14. My sister was almost 13. My DD seems to be splitting the middle and will likely be about 11.
2 things: Baking Soda and Rubbing Alcohol ;0) Both DS and older DD started to have A little BO around age 6. Took them to the doctors and asked ? Was told they were too young for regular Deodorant but to try a cotton ball soaked with alcohol rubbed under the puts right after a bath or shower about twice a week then give a lite daily dusting of Baking Soda. Worked like a charm but DS is now 10 and very very active in sports and out door activities so he has been upgraded to the Tom's natural deodorant. The occasional alcohol rub and baking soda is still working for the older DD though. Itty Bitty is still baby fresh so far at least for now... Lol!
This works becuase the odor is due to bacteria. The alcohol kills them nad the baking soda keeps the mositure that allows them to thrive at bay. MY DD would have horrible excema if we did this though, so for some kids it may be too harsh.
Puberty has nothing to do with body weight. My daughter is under 80 pounds and is starting. I had friends that weren't even 100 pounds when we graduated high school! And the reason that puberty is happening earlier is exactly opposite of eating 'better'. It is due to hormones that are added to beef and chicken.
It is NOT due to hormones. Study after study has shown that the amount of thsoe hormones that pass to the consumer is so low it cannot even be reliably detected. And, there is more and more evidence of families like the above opster who do everything that is supposedly "right" and still go through puberty earlier. The reality is that we are not necessairly eating better but getting more calories more consistently, so there are not the periods of malnutrition that were present in many people even 100 years ago. In general, we don't have to wonder where our next meal is coming form so bodies are free to do what they need to do to develop rather than conserve energy and resorces.

I don't know why? We all stunk at 6 becuase we played outside a sweated. Thats all you need for boby odor. Sweat and heat from your body to culture bacteria. The difference is that nobody bothered to cover it up. We played outside, got dirty and smelly, and got a bath at night. MY DD is a dancer and competitive cheerleader and you can bet she was wearing deodorant at 6-7, otherwise her coach would have passed out trying to spot her! It is just a fact of life with active kids. They sweat, they culture bactreia, and they smell as a result.

Why? Becuase an active child smells? Going to happen as long as there are bacteria around. Body odor is caused by a bacterial process, nothing more and it doesn't mean anything is "wrong". It is not even always tied to puberty. Some kids are just stinkier than others. It can be as simple as the pH of thier sweat being a little different. Defintitely not a reason to jump the gun and panic without other symptoms to go on.

And as to weights having an effect: My DD just hit 80 lbs and here we are.

I started wearing deodorant at 8 because I was active. I needed it at 6 but my mom just wiped out my pits once a day plus daily showers. I didn't start puberty until 11 and my period at 13.

Turns out I have hyperhydrosis which caused me to sweat more, therefore smell more. It had nothing to do with puberty or drinking non-organic milk.

There are multiple reasons a 6 yo could have BO.

All three of my kids starting needing deodorant around 7 or 8 yrs old but showed no other signs of puberty. I don't think it is that abnormal. My oldest got her period at 12 so I don't think there is any connection.

I noticed the other day that my oldest DD who just turned 7 a month ago has developed noticeable adult like BO. I was very shocked! Is this the start of puberty already? She's very small for her age, 50 lbs and 48 inches and I'm terrified that she could be starting puberty already. She's so young and so very small. She was on an every other day bathing schedule, but we've upped to once a day and the odor is still there. I'm going to call her pediatrician and discuss this with him, but I wanted to see if others had similar experiences.

I just wanted to reassure you that your DD is not that small. My DD, who turned 7 in March is 40 lbs and 46 inches!

My older DD had some body odor issues around the same age. She's 9 and I know she's been using deoderant for a couple of years now. No other signs of puberty yet, though.

Son is 9 and has been showering and wearing deodorant since he was 7. Daughter is 6 and will start showering each day during the summer. Summers are a time for two showers a day since we are outside and active. But the issue wasn't that they were smelly....I was the middle school teacher with the smelly kids, I didn't want mine to be those kids.

Maybe I missed something but why can't young kids wear regular deodorant? I have 2 Boys. One very big for his age always off the height & weight chart, the other in the 50-75% Both started wearing regular Men's deodorant in 4th or 5th grade. Started out on Gym days or before Sports practice. Then gradually ever day. I tried to get them in the habit of putting it on before other people would notice a not so nice smell. :crazy2: ;)

I think there have been concerns about some of the ingredients in antiperspirants being harmful so many are leery about using them on young kids.

hope this makes you feel a little better: My daughter started using deodorant at 7, and she is now almost 11 and has not yet started puberty...

I agree with you .I started when I was 8 and was under weight of all things. No one was expecting it as I was very shy and hadn't mention about hairs to my mom. My dds are 6yo and we are starting to see signs of it and their peds will be putting a stop to it soon as they are too young. Apparently it's genetic though and the younger you are, the younger your child will be for puberty.

Now to answer the question, body odor doesn't have much to do with puberty. Some start smelling younger others later. I for one didn't need anything before I was in my late teens. My dd however have been having BO for about a year too. I too was told a bit of alcohol with baking soda. So far so good.

I started noticing this in my daughter as early as 5 (she's almost 7 now). Not so much in the colder months but especially in the summer time or when she played soccer. It scares me too. She even has some hair on her legs.

We make sure she showers daily and I have taught her how to clean herself really well. I bought her a really light natural deodorant. When she uses it at night after her shower she's good for the next day.

I switched to organic food to try to limit hormone exposure as much as I can. I am terrified of her being 8 years old and starting her period like I keep hearing about. The ironic thing is that my son has no signs of body hair or odor and he's exposed to all the same things.

I started using teen spirit when I was 8 or 9. No big deal.

Why is this terrifying?

I think mainly because there are a lot of really dangerous ingredients in most deodorants (ie aluminum). Some of the ingredients are known to cause cancer and there have been many warnings about these products, but sadly they still work better than the natural deodorants. So most adults cross their fingers and hope for the best knowing the risk they take, but to put this on such a young child is not a good idea. I would think the natural ones would be enough for such a young child though (hopefully!).

Respectfully, I disagree about the research here, there are credible scientists on both sides of the aluminum debate, and it is far from "proven to cause cancer". Some research suggests there may be a link but it is anything but definitive.

Cut yourself some slack. Hair on the legs is NOT a sign of early puberty. Most dark haired girls will have that. DD did in preschool. You have nothing to worry about if she is showing no other signs and organic food will make no difference in when she starts her period. An early period just isn't that big of a deal. My mother in law and all her sisters started at about 9 and are normal healthy adults. They are just genetically wired to develop earlier. It wasn't a big deal in the 40s and is much less so now.
