OT - baby shower centerpieces the mom-to-be can actually use

Great centerpiece ideas! Keep them coming!

We always seem to have a hard time getting guests to pay attention all at once and long enough to do many games. I really like the mommy's bag game (who has the most items from the list in their purse) and also a games where you set a timer to go off every 10-15 mins while the mommy is opening gifts (you pick the time interval based in how long you think gift opening will take) when the timer goes off, whoever's gift is brining opened picks a prize.

Love, love, love this thread!!!! I do the baby and wedding showers for our church and I am getting lots of cool ideas!!!! Thanks :) One idea I have used in the past was small picture frames that I found on clearance. I didn't want matching ones exactly, but they all matched my color themes. I was really close to the mother (which would work for you :)) so I had some pictures of her and her family and friends. I added a couple of candles I already had and it turned out really cute!!!! Some were baby frames, but some were just simple baby colors. HTH and good luck!!!! I love baby showers :)

Just head to the dollar store and get some pails and fill each with a baby theme:

#1-Bathtime: baby wash, towels, lotion, bath wrap, bath toy. You can mix travel with full size items. Don't forget the rubber ducky ;)

#2-Playtime: stuffed animals, baby einstein DVD's, baby CD's, rattles, soft books, books in general

#3-Mealtime: bottles, bibs, maybe a small can of formula, spoons, cute plate and/or bowl set, bottle brush

#4-Diaper Duty: wipes, Desitin, powder, travel changer, hand sanitizer, diaper genie refill, travel wipe container

#5 & 6-Baby care: pacifiers, pacifier clips, baby thermometer, aspirator, nail clipper or grooming set with comb and brush, socks, onesies, blankets, baby hats, mittens

Just decorate and/ or garnish and fill in with either pink or blue tissue and/or fabric if you know the gender and your all set! Tweak with some bows if needed and i'm pretty sure your little sister will use more than most if not everything in these center pieces. ;)

Personally, I would do the opposite. I would make practical, usable centerpieces and give them out as a 'door prize' to one person at each table. I have seen diaper cakes, etc. but in my experience that is usualy the gift from the guest to the honoree. I think it would have made me feel funny to get a ton of gifts from the guests AND stack up all the centerpieces too.

So I would do some cute baskets for center pieces - either the same or different at each table - wine basket, kitchen gadget basket (some mixing spoons and kitchen towels) OR if you want to keep it lower cost - a nice large candle for the centerpiece wouldwork too.

I don't think I've ever been to a shower where there is a 'prize' centerpiece and they have all gone to the mom-to-be....I would think it was odd to sit at a table see a diaper cake in the middle and think 'hmmm...I don't really have babies - I hope someone at this table does' - and then find out that they're not even for the guests.

You could make it sort of a 'theme' gift giving shower and ask the guests to bring more practical gifts. Something like - If you choose to bring a gift - please bring diapers, wipes or other daily baby necessities.

Who says the centerpiece at a party HAS TO be a prize? I am not familiar with this custom. I am more familiar with prizes for games played at a shower, and then small favors like candy or small candles for all the guests to take home. I've never been to a party where the guests took home the center pieces.

I personally wouldn't care if the center pieces were practical diaper cakes for the mom to be. Lets be honest folks, baby showers are gift grabs for the honoree anyway.

I would say do practical diaper cakes, please don't buy supplies from the dollar store. I never would use made in china products for my kids.

Just do something little for guests, not more Knicks knacks stuff. How about Hershey bars with the printed wrapper that say " Julie's baby shower" I would much rather take home a candy bar than more junk for my house anyway.

The center pieces as prizes are pretty common here in Northwest Indiana. My MIL typically does potted flowers for baby shower centerpieces/gifts

What if the mother chooses to use cloth diapers? You sure make sure she is planning on using disposables before going forth with the diapercake idea.

I'm not a very crafty person but I made a diaper cake for a baby shower wonderful idea I think it would make a great center piece
