Orthodox Jewish Clothing Question

Thanks Rubyslipperlover and Steve!

I do want to dress in a way that is appropriate for the restaurant. I don't want to offend the family, but we're not Orthodox (we're reform), and my real goal is to dress in a way that is acceptable for the restaurant.

I get what your saying, Steve about the restaurant being kosher and not Orthodox. The restaurant probably won't have a dress code, but will still be frequented by more religious Jews who will be dress in conservative dress, so I don't want to stand out like a sore thumb.

Steve, do you keep kosher? If not, and if you're ever in Maryland, there is a great vegetarian chinese restaurant in Rockville (actually, there's two vegie chinese places, but I'd only been to the second one once). Very much worth a side trip if you are in the area.

We're vegetarian and in looking at the menu for the place in Baltimore I can't say that I'm too impressed, but we'll make do.

Maybe the attention won't be focused on us, anyway, when my other BIL walks in--the one who has multiple earrings and purple nail polish. :rotfl: I'm series, a mini-series could be made about this family!

We don't keep Kosher so if we're ever down that way I'll look up the veggie Chinese place. Actually, now that our local one closed, I think we have to plan a trip over to Chinatown in Philly for dinner one of these nites.

I don't know if you keep kosher or not..but I noticed that it is a meat restaurant.....don't ask for milk for your coffee LOL :rotfl:

Hope it all goes well.......My niece converted to Orthodox Judaism....Her DH family was not too understanding at first..but now she is part of the family!!
Sounds like your BIL and SIL are REALLY extreme if they wanted your DH to leave you and the kids :earseek:

Maybe I could make a list of questions to ask to break the ice...the milk for my coffee could be the first one. :rotfl: I'm a practical joker so that would be something that someone would expect from me, but I can just imagine the look on my SIL, BIL, and MIL's faces. hehehe Don't worry, I won't really do it, but it's fun to think of these silly things.

Yes, they are REALLY extreme, as extreme as what you can imagine. I've had orthodox people tell me that they are extreme as what they come. They won't set foot in our house, even if no food is involved. When we were thinking about going to go to Boston almost 2 years ago for their son's Bar Mitzvah, my BIL informed us that we had to be to Boston long before sunset and if we couldn't guarantee that we'd be there in time we shouldn't come. My DD was in summer school and couldn't miss the whole day (we were going to pull her out early, but she had to be there a portion of the day for the day to count for attendance purposes) and if there had of been anything that slowed us down (our youngest tends to get carsick...) we would have been cutting it close. So it was a "no go" for half of us (my DH did go and took our 2 middle children).

Last night I had a dream about the meal. The only thing I remember is everyone meeting and that went well, so maybe that's a sign.

It's called Vegetable Garden and here's the website: http://www.thevegetablegarden.com/ They have good weekday lunch specials which include a cilantro roll and soup, which is usually what I go for. Now I'm getting hungry and will need to plan a trip there soon. It's a good 1/2 hour from our house and I don't get there often.

I've never been to Philly Chinatown.

I wouldn't ask for the chicken parmigiana either.

Parts of my family are very orthodox and I am always careful at family gatherings to dress appropiately. As others have said , a long skirt and long shirt is acceptable. She maybe wearing a wig but her hair will look natural. So don't fret about your head. Since a hat doesn's cover your head, I wouldn't worry about it. My Dh and sons wear long pants, and shirts, no issue with them. Hope that you relax, dress conservatively and enjoy the meal.

I think asking for the milk would be funny..but i guess you don't want to make waves !! LOL

I understand about the Boston before dark......My niece explained it as they can not put other less conservative jewish family/friends in a postition to break the "Laws". We are the non -jewish side of the family..so right now we could drive to her house on the sabbath....that may change when they have children and don't want to confuse them....

I have enjoyed sharing her spiritual journey and learning about her faith....
there was a little tension about the wedding but it was beautiful..
( I am sure that your SIL and BIL would not consider my Dear neice to be Jewish though.....)

They would if it was an Orthodox conversion, she's keeping kosher and keeping the sabbath, and has left behind all traces of her former life. They don't make it easy. ;)

I bought my 5yo pants today (darn kid keeps growing out of his clothes), but does he have to wear pants or would nice shorts be ok for a young child? I don't mind pants, but if we have typical June weather it will be hot (we've had cool weather, but that could change quickly).

I think she would pass then! I think she's allowed to have a non-Jewish sister. ;)

Were you able to ask your friend? I think that I'll wear pants and a conservative shirt, but it would be great to know for sure what would be appropriate for the restaurant.

Thanks,
