Orlando Theme Parks Hurricane Update Thread (Direct list of closures related to Disney on page 10)

oh my gawd! I just realized that this is our usual week for Disney! (we're going in November after my father's kemo is done) we could have been there right now! :scared: stay safe everyone!

Orlando International closes at 8PM today and will be closed until Saturday when damage can be assessed.

How many times has WDW closed for hurricanes before? Was it ever multiple days?

1) Until now (October-2016), WDW closed 1½-days for hurricanes, on two separate occasions.
. . . one partial day
. . . one full day
2) This year (Matthew), Disney will equal the entire hurricane closing thus far.
. . . one partial day (Thursday, 10/6/16, starting at 5:00pm)
. . . one full day (Friday, 10/7/16, all day)

NOTE:
In all closures, or anticipated hurricane closures, there are VOLUNTEER "Ride Out Crews".
CM's can volunteer (in writing) to stay at WDW and "ride-out" the hurricane.
The Ride-Out period normally is for 72-hours straight, and can be shortened if the weather improves.
Yes, they pay double-time overtime from the start of the Ride-Out (in this case, 5:00pm, 10/6/16).
I have declined every time, and l declined, again, this time.
If the hurricane actually hits the area, I want to be home with family, not working/partying with other CM's at WDW.
Of course, lots of single CM's or those who need the extra money, do kindly volunteer.

Is there a reason as to why MGM (or Hollywood studios to other people) is open till 6? I was just on My Disney Experience and I thought it was odd that it said that.

Here's hoping everyone is safe throughout this! Can't believe it's been 11 years since Disney world had to prep for a hurricane like this. I remember following the hurricane intensely because my dad was staying at All Star Sports during Charlie 12 years ago!

Update from DCL - this cruise was supposed to begin on Saturday, October 8.

Disney Fantasy – UPDATED!

  • The October 8 sailing of the Disney Fantasy is being altered to a 6-night western Caribbean cruise departing on Sunday, October 9, from Port Canaveral. !
The park hours are still listed normally, but there's an alert that everything closes at 5. A lot of guests are unaware, and transportation to the parks hasn't stopped. We're headed from the studios back to the swan. A group of guests got off the boat to go to the studios.
It's not raining, but the sky looks very threatening right now.
ETA: 2minutes after I posted, the rain started.

Question, what exactly do the Ride Out Crews do? Obviously they stay in the parks during the hurricane but what exactly do they do in the parks?

Hotels...not parks.

They don't station much in the way of personnel in the non active areas for storms...but you're got 30,000 rooms that are filled probably 75% with mostly inexperienced crowds...so it's beneficial to have some prepped staff hanging out.

-and mostly you hang out...so it's really good for the younger staff...because that's what they would do back at apartment anyway.

I'd just like to correct one point, in that they do have ride out crews stationed in each of the parks. They are responsible for first assement after the storm has passed, along with basic cleaning and preparations for the next day.

They are not solely in the resorts

My family went through hurricane Charlie and the CM's where great they handed out flashlights for every room and had activities for the kids in the lobby before we where told we had to stay in our rooms as the storm passed over Orlando, we never lost power during the storm. Interesting the parks will be closed on Friday, when Charlie hit the parks did close early the day of the storm then opened later than normal the next day, but they did open up the next day other than one of the water parks stayed closed, and I think it was Typhoon Lagoon because of all the trees down, the EPCOT monorail was closed because of some trees down over the track. Thinking of everyone at Disney for the next day and a half but you'll be ok, and back to enjoying your vacation by Saturday.
