Orlando Ice Rinks?

Has anyone visited any ice rinks in the Orlando or Tampa area?
My daughter is an avid figure skater.

There's also a fairly new arena in Kissimmee, I believe it's called Silver Spur or something. I know it's the home rink of the Florida Seals (which are a minor minor league hockey team)

Too bad Universal doesn't have the sheet of ice at CityWalk during the holiday season anymore...

You may want to consider renting skates though. I believe the TSA considers skates a dangerous item and will only allow them as checked baggage.

If you mean the place just north of Sand Lake Road, I drove by last night and the sign was still up. It's in near the Pirate Dinner Show, if that helps geographically.

1st off you can only check skates, no carry on's at all. 2nd, I would check the USFSA.org website for a club that has figure ice available and than call them first for their freestyle ice schedule. Also bring your usfsa card or isi card in order to skate on another rinks freestyle time. You must have proof of membership when visiting from another club. If you need help PM me and I will find a club near there. I am The Skating Director from a club in Southern New Jersey.

Good points Donna. The sites I listed on my link actually came from the USFSA interclub information and offer both club and public ice. We are finding out the same information in regards to taking skates on the plane, as we prepare for our trip to Denver in a few weeks. Most rinks have access to rental skates during public ice and the OP might want to verify that they have them available during club sessions.

Having worked in my share of rinks, I'd say that if someone is a competitive skater, they'll want to bring their own skates rather than go with rental skates. Compared to what you're used to, rental skates will most likely be a different feel, and could be less "skate-able".

(of course, the tradeoff is that figure skates can be very expensive (hockey skates too, but not as much), and I'm not sure how much you'd want to take the risk of something being damaged in checked luggage)

That's definitely true if someone is going to be continuing their training while on vacation. Absolutely the tradeoff is trusting your $900 skates to the airlines. I think we're actually going to ship ours overnight to Denver when we compete there later this month. We've already had skates "misplaced" by the airlines and that was not fun.

I agree Tammi. We had a skater flying to our rink to test her Senior MIF. They lost her skates. They did end up finding them 1 hr before she was to test. Almost a tragedy. She passed by the way.. lol
