Hi we have just booked our Disney cruise:) for February 2013 now we need a hotel any suggestions? We only have about £2,500 left for flights hotel and car hire for a week. We would like to be around Lake Buenavista and we will be going 16th February until 23rd when we embark on the cruise. We usually stay in a villa but thought we would try a hotel/apartment this time. Any suggests will be gratefully received. Oh yeah there are 2 adults and 2 children 6and8 so child friendly is a must.

well your flights are going to be at least £1300, probably more
your car and/or car insurance about £300

So, presuming you have already covered misc costs, like car parking, transfers, etc, you have about £1000 for your hotel for week

At disney for about a grand you could get

Disneys Port Orleans French Quarter or Riverside
Disney's Carribbean Beach Both are much better than the value resrts, and the Port Orleans Riverside I think is really nice - but they are hotels, so you won't have the space like a villa.

You could get a nicer disney hotel - such as Wilderness lodge or Animal Kindom lodge for about £1500. But again, they are still just rooms, and not villas, so still not gonna hit the spot if you are used to or like villa type space

To get a Disney Villa (such as Saratoga Springs or or Old Key West) that will cost about £1600/1700. Disney Villas are nice, but again not quite as big or as well appointed as off site villas, but you do get the 'Disney benefits' if that floats your boat. (personally never quite sure they are worth the extra cash, and although we love Disney, its nice to get a break from it at a 'non Disneyfied' resort)

The most luxurious hotels (like Polynesian) will be about £2000.

If you buy your tickets to Disney with any of the above, you may be lucky enough to get free dining - then you might consider its worth it.

You would also get your transfer from the airport and could get your hire car delivered to your hotel, or perhaps consider doing without a car at all and using disney transport. They may even do your transfer (including your luggage to Port Canaveral for your cruise.

However, if you are not doing Disney parks for the entire week before your cruise (eg, if you are going to other parks such as Se World, or Wizarding World at Island of Adventure) then the extra you will pay for staying at Disney for a week most certainily will not be worth it.

You will then be better off with a nice luxury villa resort such as Sheraton Vistana Villages, which for a week you could get a two bedrrom villa, full kitchen, two bathrooms, living and dining areas, daily housekeeping for around £900. We have stayed here twice, and reccomend it highly.

This kind of resort is a 15 minute drive to the disney parks and downtown disney, is super child friendly, with 3 separate luxury pools with waterfalls, daily activities, shop, restaurant, hammocks in trees, play parks, outdoor BBQ stations, lovely grounds, free secure parking, security manned entry gate, etc

This resort we have stayed at twice (also with two children similar age) It has an International Drive address, but is nowhere near the main part of International Drive, and is in the quiter Lake Buena Vista area.

Sheraton Vistana Villages is nicer (in my opintion) to the similarly named sister resort of Sheraton Vistana Resort, so keep an eye out as they often get mixed up. Check out trip advisor for reviews (byt mke sure you search Vistana Villages and not the larger Vistana resort)

Below are a selection of real life pictures to this resort from our last visit

Plus here is the official site link
Sheraton Vistana Villages, 12401 International Drive
Orlando, FL 32821

Other similar resorts you should consider are Floridays, Fountains Resort, and maybe Hilton Bonnet Creek - just search for them on Google or trip advisor

I would wait and see what Disney offer for your dates. If it had been this year you could have got a studio at OKW or SSR with dining plan for about £800(plus tickets). We have booked OKW again for July/Aug £117/night including all our food, you will struggle to stay offsite & food for that price. Dates were available upto 26th Feb so you would have sneaked in. Hopefully they will announce next years offers from early April.

Again offsite I would wait until offers are released, I never tie myself to anywhere, just wait for a deal on somewhere nice and book it. Best thing about Orlando is they have too many rooms for what they need so you never need to panic into booking rooms. For under £400 you should pick up a week in a 2 bed aprt at the Cypress Point resort 8651 Treasure Lane, Lake Buena Vista but loads to choose from.

Thank you so much the photos are amazing will have a look on trip adviser. I usually book all I need through a travel company but reading all the posts I see that people book hotels, flights, car hire etc themselves. Also with Waynes advice I feel no need to panic just not sure where to look for the bargains.
Many thanks Amanda

If you remember in April bump this thread back up, I will see what is available, just a little too early for 2013 yet :goodvibes

I wouldn't dismiss the value Disney resorts - I had the same thought until I stayed at POP. I loved it.

Why did your family not like them? I'd probably dislike them more if I'd gone during a crazy busy time, or stayed in an unpopular block! But mostly I think people's experiences are good!

I'd definitely wait & see what Disney can offer but in the meantime i'd highly suggest looking into offsite condo complex's like 'Floridays' & 'Sheraton Vistana Villages' as it's much more cheaper than staying onsite at Disney & you get so much more for your money! You can also park your car. But ofcourse there's always the option of renting DVC points to stay at one of Disney's Vacation Club Resorts (they're condo's/apartments but Disney calls them 'villas') which would mean you'd get all the perks of staying onsite like Extra Magical Hours, free Transportation between the Disney Parks etc.

All great ideas, but as you are used to a regular sized villa for your family, be aware that a Disny villa studio is small - just 390 square feet, and just two double beds. For the four of you, (in two beds) this may be a bit of a squash? Especially as you are going to be squashed a bit again the following week when you go on your cruise?

Also remember if you book a villa direct with a resort such as a Sheraton or Hilton, you are not tied in, you don't have to pay until you check out, and you can cancel up to 48 hours before arrival with no penalty (as opposed to a month or more with Disney).

That said - if you can get a spacious Disney Villa with free dining, during Feb Half Term, for less that £1500, then go for it (and let me know too!!)
