Oprah today

I totally agree with most of what was said on this thread. I enjoyed Oprah.... in high school. there I said it! But, that would be about the age group that it would appeal to over and over and over on a continual basis. With the products pushed and the constant eye on narcissism, etc. I think loco4dis is right on this, she is the popular girl in high school, and each day we get to tune in and see what wonderful crap she is up to.

If you want some truly GREAT, and there isn't an ounce of sarcasm in that, reading, check out Living Oprah. It's a blog that a Chicago writer has kept for over a year detailing how she is living in Oprah's footsteps, doing everything she suggests. Cooking recipes, reading books, buying products, watching movies, EVERYTHING... It's a really good read to see if the Queen of All Media really does lead you to feel more complete, or more empty.

In the end Oprah is a 53 year old woman who must endure hours of hair and make-up before she can present herself in front of HER audience -

perhaps she woud be more real if she just sat down with us in her snuggy bathrobe, no make up or hair extensions -

in the end how can you love yourself if you have to create a personna to hide behind ... ignore the woman behind the curtain, just watch the puppet on camera

You know what? Oprah's been "heavier" more than she's been thinner for most of her career, and she's done OK.
And, quite frankly, if I had $50 bazillion, my self-esteem would be just fine thanks. Let all the skinny chicks laugh at me...they're my staff.;)

Her issue isn't anything other than self-esteem. She needs to eat right and do a normal amount of regular exercise and her weight will regulate itself to where it is supposed to be and that number may be higher than Oprah wants, but that will be life. My weight has been the same for probably the last 15 years..it's more than I want to weigh, but it's my weight. I have been a "big" girl all my life. When I was younger, I was thinner than I am now, but I have always been big. 5'8" tall, big shoulders, big chest. As a nurse, when a patient needs to be lifted, moved or whatever, I am always the person they come and get because I am big and strong. Never was, and never will be, the cute petite delicate little flower who can't reach things on the high shelves and can't do too much physical work because I am so delicate. I have always been the "zaftig" woman...strong girl, pull plow.

And I do change the channel.

Totally OT, but just wanted to say a "Thank You" to you Disney Doll and all the other wonderful nurses and LPNs and CNAs that are able to care for patients so tenderly when they are unable to move themselves. Just went through this with my Dad and I was amazed at how warm and caring the nursing staff was, day after day, always a gentle touch. :thumbsup2

On O: Didn't she used to say mashed potatoes and gravy were her comfort food? There is no way to be thin, if you have gravy as your special treat.

and just like a teen girl, she has a group of loyal followers that will like whatever she likes and dislike whatever she dislikes. She's the popular girl!

She is the popular girl who enjoys buying friends...just look under your seat and see what you can take home today!

Hypothyroidism has nothing to do with being a food addict.

I like Oprah, but that show yesterday, I just had to turn it. Especially when she brought Carnie Wilson on there, talking the same ol' garbage.

You can love yourself to the extreme, but in order to lose weight you have to reduce calories and exercise. Or in order to maintain weight, you still have to watch caloric intake, and do at least some exercise....at least that's the case for me. I do have a problem with emotional eating, and have to be aware of it...and I do think emotional state of mind does have something to do with eating/weight control. But the bottom line is calories and exercise.

Anyone else thinks she looks better at a bit higher of a weight? Say, 20 pounds less than right now, but not at her skinniest. I thought she looked pretty terrible at the lower weight.

I have to admit that over the years I have had some a-ha moments from watching her show, but they are few and far between now. And I hate the celebrity shows.

but I like Oprah. I don't watch all her shows or anything like that but if they are having a topic that I like I will. I record her shows and deleted about 75% of them because the topics don't interest me.

Yesterday's did though. She made 1 comment that I loved and took away with me. She said something about her body may not be the best body, the skinniest body or even the healthiest body, but it faired her well and she is grateful for it. I made the decision after hearing that to no longer pick my body apart the way women tend to do. Just earlier that same day, I raced DD6 and 8 two stores down to target. Mind you they won and I was panting like I don't know what but i was able to run. I can pick up my 3 yo without any problems. I am in good health and have always been. That was my "a-ha" moment. Maybe I shoulda/coulda/woulda came to that moment without hearing what Oprah said but I didn't. But this morning, I looked in the mirror and saw what was right instead of what was wrong.

Well, I'm with you. I like her, tape her shows and delete 75% of them. I like how she has helped me be a more positive person, instead of picking myself apart.

I love Oprah too. I don't usually get to see more than about 15 minutes -- because I get home from work 15 minutes before her show goes off. However, this week I really wanted to hear all the shows. So I put my small portable television in the car so I could hear the shows on the way home. Boy, I am going to miss this television when it stops working in February. Anyway, I thought today's show was great. I even went to Oprah's website to print out some of the information.

Yes, I have heard it umpteen times on the show...however as a person on day 2 of quitting smoking, every bit helps to hear.;)

You bet!! I think that shows like this can be highly motivating during these times. I thought it was great to see that woman who was on the show last year who was 44 but was "60". She has made some drastic improvements, especially with quitting smoking.

I also like that the people they showed today were such "real" people. Even though they've lost a lot of weight, quit smoking, are eating better, they still look relatively normal. So many of these types of shows have the people coming out after doing this and they have all types of surgeries, makeovers, etc. that the normal person cannot relate to their success and you have to wonder how much of it was even real. Today, the people looked like they had really taken it seriously.

Right. :thumbsup2

Like I am getting ready to watch "Biggest Loser" season premerie tonight and that is just not normal to drop all that weight in a matter of weeks.

I am really trying this year, so although Oprah is tiresome after 20+yrs....she is on track with what I need to do. Particularly the cancer screenings.
