Opinions on spanking children?

So, could a teacher spank a 16 year old student for acting up? :rolleyes1

Are you referring to paddeling in school? I don't actually have a problem with it.

Corporal punishment is used in schools. Dd has never gotten in trouble so it has never been an issue, but she knows it can happen. If either of my sons were paddled it only happened one or two times.

When my sons were in middle school, there was a male teacher that carried a paddle with him at all times. He spoke very abusivly to the students. I went to the principal and talked to him about this one teacher and told him that if either of my sons did anything that warranted a paddling in that man's class that they were to be taken to the office and be paddled by the principal. So, I took away the possiblity of that man crossing a line, but didn't tie the school's hands either.

I signed the note that gave permission for coporal punishment in high school but it never came up. A studnet standing in the hallway taking 3 wacks on the butt from a principal is hardly abusive.

I wish you were kidding, but I know you´re not! :sad2:

High school:eek: Will you sign a note for their boss to hit them at work when the time comes:rotfl:

At 16 years old, you can drive. Many 16 year olds have after school jobs. I can't imagine thinking it is normal to spank them.

Absurd.

YES! I´m finding it very difficult to see "both sides" when I see comments like the one you were answering.

Really? In our schools, jr. high is 7th and 8th grade. 12-14 year olds. (dd is one of the youngest in 7th grade and she is 12). 10 year olds are more around 4th or 5th grade.

.

Jr High aroud here is 6,7 & 8th and my daughter and many of her friends were 10 years old in 6th grade.

Where do you spank? A father hitting the butt of his daughter who is old enough to have children of her own is somewhat perverse and downright weird. Same goes for a son.

Again, if you haven't figured out how to discipline your child without hitting by the time they are 10 or so, I don't think the spanking method is working.

when did I say I didn't spank on the butt?

And, btw, that would be YOUR opinion. Dd has only had a couple of spankings in her life so I can't really say at this point that dh would spank her or not but I can 100% assure you that if he did (she is 12), there would be NOTHING perverse about it.

So you don't ever have to discipline your child after the age of 10? Because the same would hold true of ANY discipline. I mean, if you are STILL putting a 10 year old in time out its not working, right? Or if you STILL have to take away privleges, its not working, right?

Did I say I agree? I was rather pointing out that it occurs. I personally believe that after about 6 years old some forms of discipline work better then others.

Yes, because we know how well NOT paddling is working. Right?

Yep--that is working REALLY well.

Look, if you do not want your child spanked or paddled--more power to you. But you do not have the right to tell others how they should discipline thier child. If you see a child being verbally abused--by all means step in. If you see someone slapping a child in the face or over their body--please stop it. If you see someone pulling a child's hair or doing something that will leave marks and bruises on the child --report them. But spanking a child or paddling is NOT abuse. It is two different things.

You´re right. NOT paddling is working very well for me and my kids thank you very much. Just as it is for every other parent around me. Spanking IS just as much abuse as verbal abuse is!

Thank you for taking just one of the definitions provided by Webster...you forgot the other:
No, I didn't. You even quoted me saying, "Only sometimes does discipline include punishment"... While my perspective encompasses many of the definitions of discipline, you have chosen to assert that that one definition that talks about inflicting pain is the only one relevant. That's what I would find sad. And incorrect.

Nope sorry. You can be reported to DHS and even be charged with verbal abuse. Had a parent whose dd was taken from her home for a few days because of verbal abuse. Spanking is legal.

I didn't say whether it is working for YOU, I was referring to schools.

Why is it that anti-spanking folks feel the need to force their opinion down everyone's throats?

If you don't want to spank, don't. If you don't want your child paddled, make sure they are not. But that does not give you the right to tell anyone else how they should discipline their child.

Like I said in an earlier post, everyone that doesn't spank seem to think we are all beating our children constantly and having them cowering in the corner. Many that do spank think the non-spankers are allowing their kids to run wild. Neither is true.

How well is spanking working for ya? You are still signing notes that allow your child to be spanked in high school. Yikes!

They are working age, and yet you think it is ok for a paddle to come in contact with their rear end?

Strange.

Heck, they´re even old enough to have their own children to discipline. I can totally picture the scenario: "Wait a minute baby, I´ll will be with you in a second. The principle is just going to spank mommy first for being a bad girl."

That sounds soooooo wrong.

I spank my kids when they are acting up, They are getting old enough now that they hardly get them anymore!!!

I was a definite victim of child abuse. My dad abused the four of us kids and also my mom. My first day of Jr High I went with a "fat lip". I am not scarred and turned out just fine. What I'm trying to say is a gentle swipe on the behind is not going to leave a life long emotional problem.

Why would a "gentle swipe on the behind" work in terms of changing childrens actions?
