Hi everyone,

I've never posted on here before but I'm trying to improve my photography and I'd love some feeback on my recent attempts! My camera is a Canon 300D with the standard lens it came with.

Cinderella Castle at Night, Oct 3rd 2006:
Taken by placing the camera on top of a bin on Main St for stability!

Lincoln Cathedral, Nov 18th 2006:
Taken from the car as we sat at lights beside it. This has been edited slightly as there were reflections from the dashboard but otherwise is as photographed.

Taken on macro.

I am guessing that you like low light photography. If so, then I suggest that you invest in a the 50mm prime. I have a Pentax, but I believe the Canon one goes for around $80. I have heard that it is a pretty nice lens esp. for the cheap price.

I realy like the colored castle pictures. Maybe crop some of the sides. I like the white globe lights, not too much glare around them.

the church pic is nice. definately stop back there with a tripod.

the berry pic has nice depth of field.

Yup, for low light shots a 50mm prime would be a good investment for you. These shots are nice - composition and colors are good, but the night shots are a little bit soft because of the long exposure time and the lack of a really solid mount for your camera.
I tried the camera bin approach with a small tripod on our last trip and was disappointed with the results. The pics were salvageable but not optimal.
That said, considering you were shooting from
A- a trash bin and
B - a running car through the glass
Great job

The castle shot was .8 seconds at f5 and the church was 1.3 seconds at f3.5. That's a long time to keep a shutter open without rock-solid stability, especially at the ranges you were shooting.

If you get a 50mm 1.8 lens you can decrease your exposure time and reduce the effects of camera shake.
Even the last shot of the berries would benefit from the 1.8 to decrease the depth of field even more.

Keep shooting and keep posting here. I've only been posting for a few months myself and found it a really friendly place to share.

it might be you want to set your timer( it think that camera is the same as the rebel xt here) or get a remote. i tried the "bin" method on a pier at dusk and i think due to my finger push it was not so sharp since it's not really stuck to the bin like it would be to a tripod. really even with a regular tripod i use the remote due to my inablitly to gently press the shutter ie not move the whole deal with my fingers of iron

but i like the soaring feeling of the catherdral and the castle is calling my name

jan - if you get finger movement pressing the shutter using the rubbish bin method, use the auto-timer. set it for 2 seconds. press and then chimp to see your results.

to the OP - overall i'd say the shots were quite good. were you happy with them? the more you take and decide for yourself what you like and dislike, the more you define your own style. you might want to adjust the white balance on the second shot - you'll probably be happier with it.
