I can see where it is a bit of a mess, but I don't know why it would be any more risky than any contract with a 2042 end date. Does anyone know what the current ownership percentages are..... 2042 vs 2057?
I'd assume we'll see ROFR rates at OKW start to rise. Disney can buy them back and resell them as 2057. Of course, there will be some that remain. I'd imagine they want to convert as many as possible.
AKV - True! The cheap value studios are the appeal.
SSR - My thought was just that we can probably get studios at SSR easily if nothing else is available and we'd be content doing so. So, I thought owning where the rooms we want are harder to come by was a good strategy. I'm so confused!
BWV - I can see this being the place DH and I still go when we're old and the kids are no longer coming with us or only come every few years. That's why I was considering a small contract here. It would be the one we kept until it expired (assume).
While studios at AKV and OKW are not as often available as SSR, they are often often available up to four months out. You won't have a problem getting a studio at 7 months at either location. I know the whole, "but where you want to stay" mantra, but I don't think it applies to AKV or OKW other than the exceptions I noted.
They would help you bank them into 2017, even if past deadline, so you can use them by the next UY. So, say, you get Aug UY....you'd bank them and have to use them by end of July 2018. Sept UY would need to be used by end of Aug 2018.
Look at this to see the common UY...so if you go direct now and plan to add later you can pick a UY that has a lot of contracts out there. And Aug UY to Dec would get you the 2016 points.
Oops...meant to put link to the DVC distribution if points chart. Don't have that link now and am watching big brother...but you can Google it. OP...I think you have a good grasp of things and I, personally, like your plan. I'd probably do the direct contract now....at OKW to keep cost down or BWV to have the great location that is tougher to book at 7 months.

Thanks! I was going to ask if there was supposed to be a link but never got back around to it! I'm sure I can find it!
I am fairly certain I will be buying 50 points direct very soon....somewhere! Most people are adding on 25 points direct anyway. Another 25 points at the higher direct price isn't going to kill me. Then I'll have points to start booking, access to the DVC site so I can see how the availability really looks and some time to sit and wait for the right resale contract(s) to come along.
I can see where multiple small contracts can get complicated, but I also see a value in them. On a personal level, I have 2 teenagers that love WDW and already talk about bringing their own kids some day. I can see 2 of my 3 small contracts in their future! I'm such a nice mom! Ha ha!
I also buy with thoughts of my three kids getting our contracts someday. Initially I was trying to keep the total divisible by three with thoughts of gifting them over but now I think we will keep them and pay the dues and just book trips for the kids and their families. We shall see. Another thing you may want to consider is putting their names on the deed now. I recently considered adding some more direct with my twin DDs-18 names so they can get the blue card for discounts and access to the DVC lounge. They may be at Disney without us in the near future and when they are with us they do their own thing. Also considered putting my in-laws names on a direct contract so they can get the blue card. They use our points currently to go with us a lot or with SIL...but they need the card less since DH, myself or SIL or BIL are usually with them and we all have the blue cards.
My personal sense is that owning 2042 OKW is fine but I think there is true $$$ risk owning 2057. It may not be an issue but there are variables that could significantly impact both cost and resort usage/setup.
