Opinion on celebrating birthdays~when it's not really your birthday?

when my neice and I went to celebrate our birthday (mine being on Sept. 12 hers Sept 23...we went on the days in between...) I got HER a pin to wear for the day we were in the MK other than that we wore matching t-shirts that said we were celebrating our birthdays (thanks to JuliaandNicksMom for the designs....) The buttons got some attention but when everyone walks up wearing matching shirts it gets more atention and special Happy Birthday Wishes..

That was kind of our feeling about it. We don't want to take advantage of things, or make it less special for those who are actually celebrating their birthdays that day. For instance, last year, we were there for our DS' birthday. (Turning 3.) We didn't make a big deal out of it, but did let him wear his birthday button(s) for all 3 days we were in the parks. He got a cupcake at most restaurants. The only restaurant that I TOLD them it was his birthday was at Tony's Town Square, and that was on his actual birthday. DH feels that if we do this while we're there, we should do it at only one restaurant, and I'm not certain he's even convinced of that. On the other hand, I do understand that the trip IS their main birthday celebration... hence, my dilemma! I guess I could talk to the mom and see if she wanted to order a cake or something, I'm just not sure how to handle it.

We did that...picked a restaurant, and made THAT meal the Birthday meal. My thinking was that even if the trip was the BIRTHDAY PRESENT, that is a heck of a great present! Buttons won't make it more so, necessarily. In our experience, the buttons were ignored a lot, and sneered at occasionally. We preferred leaving it off. We got one from each park, but dd didn't wear them except on the exact day. Her birthday meal, btw, was a different day (the only day we could get that restaurant). She got the little dessert, but no card or anything.

We've celebrated our birthdays at WDW once! It was a lot of fun!!

My hubby's birthday was 3 weeks before our trip, so I simply surprised him with a Mickey Mouse birthday cake one night at the Resort & he picked a Birthday meal. This was a short trip we took together right before he went away to boot camp on my actual birthday. Since he was leaving for about 4 1/2 months on my birthday - April 1st - we celebrated my birthday with Tigger at Crystal Palace on March 31st. That was my only birthday celebration that year, since hubby was gone by April 1st.

I like the idea of allowing each child to pick a dinner for their "Birthday Dinner" - it allows them to feel special for a day & feel involved in planning the trip! Everyone's got a different opinion on wearing the buttons - I think it just depends on if you're comfortable with it, or not. I see nothing wrong with it either way.

People can celebrate their birthdays whenever they want. Usually a party is not on the actual day, BUT there is no pretense that it is the actual day.

I would not put a "Today is My Birthday" button on my child on any day other than her birthday.

My daughter will be celebrating her 1st birthday a week and a half before our Disney trip.
I am getting her the button to wear on her first day in Disney.
We have reason to celebrate and will.

I have a problem with the people that abuse the idea of the buttons. I have read a few trip reports on this board from adults that wore their "Its my Birthday Today" buttons for their entire trip(4 days +). That is excessive and abusive of the "system" and really bothers me. Having said that, for your circumstance, if you only do the Chef Mickeys dinner, I think that would be just fine. So, go for it, celebrate and have fun.

Thanks for all the opinions! I'll discuss it again with DH, and then with the parents in the other family. I'm sure we can come up with something that will be acceptable for us all!

In the meantime, can't waste time thinking about THAT... I've got to do all my last minute packing for THIS trip (leaving in 22 hours!!). DH is currently at Wal-Mart trying to decipher my list. I should have just gone myself!! LOL!

We normally go to WDW twice a year, once on my sons b-day and once on my daughters. This year I was layed off from work so we are only going once right between the thier two birthdays. I told each of them to select a restaurant and 1 day at the beginning of the trip we will celebrate my sons birthday and towards the end of the trip 1 day we will celebrate my daughters birthday. This is exactly what I told them when I made the resrevation as well that we were "celebrating" their birthday on that day.

My kids birthday parties at home often fall on days that aren't their actual birthday. I think if you are there within a few days of your birthday, go for it. If its months away or even weeks off, ehhh I wouldn't do it. I would be fine celebrating the birthday but I would be paying for the cake and stuff and I wouldn't ask for a birthday pin.
