Only read if you are a female in your 40s

I just got back from Kohl's. I shop there about twice a year...if that. I lucked out! I happened to be there during the right hours to get 50% - 60% off most of what I bought. Managed to find four crew neck shirts and one pair of twill pants. They're great for work. You can't get me into polyester pants! :earseek: :scared1: Grand total spent prior to tax...$48.19.

P.S. DS likes plaid shorts. I keep telling him that he looks like my dad in them. Exactly the thing dad used to wear! He said my dad was cool. LOL!

....ohhh, I am SOOOO luvin' those jeans - but $158??!?!? :earseek: I'd DEFINITELY have to get one o' those $2,000 What-Not-To-Wear Visa cards with my name on it to buy a pair of those....
LOL! :lmao: :thumbsup2

I agree with you 100%........I don't and never have lived in the state of mind of "age appropriate" I say if you have the figure, the looks, and the attitude to wear it then WEAR IT! Who tells us what we have to wear and what we shouldn't wear anyways! I have seen many 50+ women in bikinis that are still looking good! In this day in age it is so hard to tell peoples ages anyways. If you like it and you feel good in it then wear it. Quite honestly you will not find me in Coldwater Creek or Talbots with the dresses down to my ankles and the elastic waist band pants, and if others look down on me the heck with them.....I am my own person and if it fits I will wear it. It's kinda like when you turn 40 your supposed to cut your hair and suddenly wear polyester pants....for peets sake this is not the 1940's anymore. You will also not be seeing me with "blue hair" when I turn 60 either!

:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

I agree with you 100%, Maybe that means I wasn't raised right.:rolleyes1 :lmao:

$150 for jeans?

The ones I have on now I got for $10 at Old Navy.

And my Stitch tee shirt was on sale.

I have a ton of blazers from Coldwater Creek for work, I get them 75% off when they switch seasons and have sales.

I am a SAHM, and a jeans girl, so a well-fitting pair of jeans is worth a million dollars to me!

I did pay full price for my first pair, but got the second pair, new with tags on Ebay for $65...

Why wouldn't you be raised right? If it fits you and you look good it's fine. If it fits you and you look bad--it's not fine.

I think that's the whole point of this thread. There is lots of stuff out there that fits a person, but isn't necessarily flattering. We can only hope that most people have the good sense to know if it's not flattering.

For instance, I LOVE all the longish, and tapered polos that American Eagle sells. They fit me; however, this year, since my mid-sections seems to have developed its own life, they don't necessarily look that good on me. Or rather, they are NOT camoflauging (sp??) that love handle at all. So, I didn't buy them this year.:( I did find a nice, trim T-shirt at Ann Taylor though that doesn't make me look like my grandma, hides the roll. It's not as cute as the American Eagle polo but it is better suited for me.

That doesn't mean all 40+ women can't wear the stuff from American Eagle. My cousin, who is 45 and is a very muscular person can wear all the tops and they look great on her.

I'm with you, but things aren't sagging that badly for the most part. Maybe in a few years, when I'm in the mid-40s I'll feel differently. You know those little peasant tops that are everywhere now are really cute on any age, not for work, but for fun. And trapeze dresses can be cute on almost everybody if they aren't too short. Are those age inappropriate?

Let me tell you, from 43 to 44 (and almost 45) hasn't been pretty. I'm not overweight but things just aren't doing well this year. My best friend will be 43 this year and she said that her upper arms look ten times worse than they did last summer. Sheesh!

I think this is more a "body style" thing. I have never looked good in peasant tops, puffy sleeves, ruffles, or bows. I think it has to do with being tall and on the thinner side. I also have shorter hair. I do really well with very tailored stuff. Very tapered jackets and blouses with definite waists, very slim pants, pencil skirts--that kind of thing. I've never been able to pull of "flouncy, lacy, flowery, flowing" it just doesn't look right on me. So the peasant blouses make me look silly--at any age. I do like them and I think they look great on certain body shapes.

Yup-you got it! Just a thread I started to get ideas where to shop and find others feeling the same way I do as we are getting older. Also trying to feel good about our body image.

By the way....I did buy two of the cute little peasant tops and I LOVE them!

Hey-where is Pop Daddy???? I thought he would have had a comment to make on this thread. Pop Daddy-you are letting us down!!;) ;)

I just turned 40 in April - I agree, it is really hard to know what to wear sometimes. Although I agree that I don't want to look frumpy, I do believe that there is such thing as "age appropriateness."

Oh, and I LOVE my David Kahn jeans! http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/2977275...d+kahn+in+All+Categories&origin=searchresults They have a slightly higher rise - so no muffin top, but they are FAR from Mom jeans. Try them!

Your right those jeans are fantastic & well worth it!!!!! Amazing cut & fit.

As far as some other posters that don't believe in being "age appropriate" maybe it has to do with where you live and what career:confused3

I think if you have self respect, education & don't have the need to flaunt & be the center of (negative) attention class & polish arrive easily and the aging process is wonderful!

I like Ann Taylor and Ann Taylor Loft, that's where I buy most of my clothes. I do get a lot at Macy's, but mostly neutral things. We have a small mall, so they don't carry all of the brands that they do online. I like the INC brand, but I have to pick some of the more conservative pieces, as I tend to look for the "younger" styles in the other brands. I also have quite a bit from the Gap, again mostly basics, same way with J.Crew and Tommy Bahama (of course most of my clothes are basics). One store that I really like is White House Black Market, the younger alternative to Chico's, but I need to lose some weight before most of it will actually look good on me. :headache: I like Banana Republic, but most things don't fit me right either, though they make my size and bigger. In my mid-forties I do still feel young enough for a few things from The Limited, but I need to drop a size before it will even fit me. :rolleyes1

For jeans, I've been liking the Gap essential jeans. I also have a pair of Tommy Hilfiger's and DKNY's that actually look good on my butt. :rotfl: For khakis and twills, the Julie style from Ann Taylor Loft seems to fit me best. :thumbsup2

I'm no help.

If it's cute, I'll buy it. Tank tops, camis, capris, skirts, dresses, jeans, shorts, cute shoes and boots.

I love trendy clothes. Just because I turned 40 in January, doesn't mean I have to dress like my mother or grandmother.

THANK YOU! My Mother is in her 60s and is still wearing cute, stylish clothes. I intend to wear whatever looks good on me for as long as I can (I'm not 40 but felt like replying anyway.;) )

On the same token, maybe if you don't " let yourself go", most styles DO still look nice on you.:)

I definitely haven't let myself go but I can definitely see that I look silly in some things now. I just do. I am not saying all over-40 women do. But I do. I don't really know why either. I certainly am far from dressing matronly, but I don't wear things that tie in the back with a bow, I don't wear poofy, short sleeves anymore, and my days of booty shorts are over.;)

My co-worker is 50 years old, looks 40, is in great shape and is tiny, tiny, not an ounce of fat on her. All of 5'2" and 100 lbs. She can pull off most anything. She wears a lot of great, cute stuff from J. Crew, BCBG, Ann Taylor. Both my other co-worker and I agree (we are in our 40s) that we couldn't pull off those outfits that she does. We're too "big" at 5'7" and 5'8" and we just have a different look. (Not saying I can't wear J. Crew, just not the same things she does).

I really think you've got to find things that are appropriate for your body type. It's not totally an age thing but age does matter to some degree and you have to evolve with that.
