DH and I need to open a new checking account online. Suggestions on the best free one? Does anyone know of any with a signup bonus?

Your regular bank should have online banking. I've worked with Wells Fargo, PNC, and Bank of America. Pretty much every bank has online banking.

Our bank has it but doesn’t give us a bonus for signing up and it comes with fees. We want to open a separate checking account for some shared expenses so we were looking to capitalize on a bonus or one with a good rate. My bill pays are already set up on our primary checking account and I don’t want to change them so it doesn’t have to have a ton of functionality.

I did pnc for the bonus. Used it to help me meet minimum spend for a credit card. But my online bank is capital one.

No bonus for signing up for online checking for me either. Maybe you can find a bonus for opening a new checking account without fees, but that may require you to have direct deposit, use their debit card a certain number of times per month, etc. I just with through this with DD21 when we tried to open a checking account. In order to get it without fees, they want all/most of your banking.

Good luck in your search.!

I use Ally for my checking & savings. They are purely an online bank so no physical buildings. Have been very easy to use, great customer service, ATM fees are reimbursed, and they offer pretty decent interest rates compared to other banks.

I just got rid of my checking account with US Bank about 5 years ago. I just use my Fidelity brokerage account to write checks if I need to. I found out that having a physical bank branch near my home doesn't matter since I never went there anyway. Just using a brokerage account works fine for me.

Not sure if there's any current bonus, but I got a couple hundred dollars from Chase back in the day. If you are a veteran, they have free checking with no minimums. Even free checks.

I had online checking & savings accounts with ING for years; Capital One bought them a few years ago and the online-only accounts that were converted from ING are now Capital One 360. I’ve stuck with them because there are no fees regardless of your balance and the account earns a small % interest. I can also now use Capital One ATMs for free, which is convenient for me. I don’t know if they have any sign up bonuses, but I’d recommend them for a no fee online account.

Look into a local credit union you are eligible to join. I bank at both traditional banks and credit unions but get less fees at the credit union. I don't know about any bonus for signing up but the fee schedule is much lower.

Try Everbank - they do at least a higher int rate the first 6-12 months, then decent int rate after that.
