We are interested in renting a car for one day to visit relatives who live nearby and pick up some groceries. Haven't rented a car before - is there any fee or additional cost to do this? Looks like better deals are had if renting over a weekend or multiple days.

I've done this before - to get from the airport to the resort (Dolphin or Swan those trips). It's been a while, but it wasn't much from what I recall.

Where are you staying? You can get Alamo and National pick up or drop off at the Dolphin.

One new fee to keep in mind: if you drive less than 75 miles (which you probably would) - some rental agencies now require proof that you filled the tank. In the past, I had picked up the car at the airport, done one or two grocery stops on the way, and dropped off at the Dolphin without filling the tank (it still read pretty much full). Now even if it's a gallon or two, I'd refill and give them the receipt. I think too many people were using a small amount of gas and not refilling (and of course, it would be a way to get an extra $15 for them!).

Always, with car rentals, keep checking. It's like Southwest airline fares - they can go up and down for the pricing. You can always cancel and book again if the price drops (as long as you don't prepay).

One day rentals are usually more expensive that weekend rentals or weekly rentals. There is no fee or additional cost to a daily rental.

We're staying at WL. I thought we would pick up and return at the Disney car center. A little worried about setting the return time; do I need to be exact?

They have a shuttle for the CCC which will pick you up at your resort and take you back to your resort at the end of the rental, during their business hours.

You don't have to be exact with the return as long as you are within that 24 hour rental period. IE: rent at 1pm Tuesday, return by 1pm on Wed. You have a 29 minute grace period, after that you will incur an hourly rate until the magic 2 hour late at which point you will be charged an additional day.
