Once in a Lifetime Stay at the Poly -- During REHAB?

Hi everyone,

Would you stay at the Polynesian the *one* time you'll probably ever stay there, while it's undergoing rehab?

Sounds like they'll be redoing longhouses and have the Captain Cooks area torn up a bunch, and I'm thinking we'd be happier saving our special Poly splurge for when it's all over.

What would you do? We'd be in a lagoon view, who knows where, so maybe it wouldn't affect us too much. We don't usually eat at the resort's counter service place, but I'm concerned about how ugly the rehab will be from the pool area, and how congested it will make the restaurants (Kona and Ohana).

Would love to hear everyone's input.

I have been there many times when things were being worked on and it has never bothered me. I can’t tell you how you will feel. Having a lagoon view room means you will not be looking at any of it. I don’t use Captain Cook’s much myself so that would not turn me away. If anything with the longhouses closed there will be less people staying there. I would say go and I bet that you won’t even notice the rehab going on.

I will see what I can find out when I am there this weekend.

Thank you, Steve! I just know my dbf has something special planned, and I would hate for him to be disappointed in any way. He loved the Yacht Club when he stayed there last Christmas with his mom, and I'm just wondering if he'd be happier in a water view room there, than the Poly under refurb.

You're deluding yourself. Once you go Poly, you'll NEVER go back!

I agree with Tikiman that you will probably not be effected by the rehab in a serious way - especially if you are staying lagoon view. I was worried about this issue also - we are going in two weeks - but my feeling is that it is still the Polynesian and the atmosphere can't be destroyed by some rehab. I've been there many times when they are renovating (the worst was the quiet pool - tall brown plywood walls everywhere) and we still loved it.

Go with it. You won't be disappointed.

While I've never been to Poly while under rehab, I think a lot of people are under the misconception that there will be construction chaos all over the village. From what I've read on other threads, the rehab work was not that noticeable, and not at all intrusive. Tikiman will give an update I'm sure. I'll tell you this, I'm going the second week in Oct., rehabe or not, I wouldn't stay anywhere else.

I just stayed at the Poly from July 22 thru 31st. It's under rehab??? Did not really notice. Yes they are working near Captian Hooks, but it really isn't noticeable. We stayed in Samoa first floor Volcano pool side and never saw the construction at other buildings. We did notice some construction trucks(2) parked in the first section of the parking lot as you enter thru the gates. None of the magic was gone due to any of this. Its such a beautiful resort...

I'm hoping that it won't matter and I don't think it will. We have been to the poly many times and now going for 2 weeks, and I am not planning on 2 weeks of chaos. We have been there during the last rehab, and it was not that big a deal. The room rehabs where pretty unnoticable. They where contained to the building and you just saw some workers walking to and from. We where there during some work in the GCH (the main bathroom work near captin cooks) and it was all covered up and baracaded so you where not involved at all. I would think for sure during the captin rehab they will set up something up in its place. Example during kona's last face lift they reopened tangaroa terrace buffet for meals buffet and table service till it was over.

However; I know what you mean. We where at the GF during the major pool rehab (didn't know about) in 2001. We checked in everything ok the next day everything boarded up and the main pool closed. The rock pool had just opened and the water was being kept near freezing even though all guest where complaining? No one was happy... I would of moved if, I was more aware of my options back then Now I would not stand for that at those prices. (and yes we talked to the "guest manager of pools", then later went to the front desk and talked to the manager there" no help). Anyway (off track) it was miserable not to be prepared, and with the main pool down it was a big problem in the heat, and crowd, I would not do that again. But if they where working on 1 of the buildings it would not effect me at all.

Last time we where at BC they where working on that. And SAB! Guys where painting about 2 feet from where people where swimming. I thinking WDW is in a constant state of rehab. Hardly, any way to get away from it.

Don't worry about. But if you are do what will make you happy. Maybe next year or the year later you would rather try out the poly and the new rooms? Whatever you decide have a great trip. Mky

It won't matter unless you go expecting perfection and are let down by the site of the occasional worker strolling around or maybe some plywood. We have been going to the Poly the last 4 years. Most times we were there they were rehabbing something or another. The worse we ever saw was when they were rehabbing Nuie. There was plywood around the building. They put a bunch of potted palms all around it to make it less noticeable but it really didn't work. Did it bother me? No way! There is so much more to look at that after the first time seeing it we didn't even notice it. We are going again in October and don't care what is going on. As long as we are at the Poly we will be fine!

I've been to the Polynesian when they've been rehabbing longhouses, the GCH, and walkways. While I'd prefer not to see any of those big brown boards, I never found the work noisy or distracting. It seems like something is always being worked on, but that never stops me from loving and enjoying my stay and wanting to return as soon as I can. Wish I was there now!

In general, it seems like something is *always* under rehab, so you might be in for a long wait if you want to totally avoid it. It's generally not that noticeable, though.
