In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Thanks, Dan, for reminding us to take the time to reflect on all those Veterans that gave so much for all of us.:sunny:

Thanks Dan. Here's a poem written in response to In Flander's Field.

Oh! You who sleep in Flanders’ fields,
Sleep sweet - to rise anew,
We caught the torch you threw,
And holding high we kept
The faith with those who died.
We cherish too, the poppy red
That grows on fields where valour led.

It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies,
But lends a lustre to the red
Of the flower that blooms above the dead
In Flanders’ fields.

And now the torch and poppy red
Wear in honour of our dead.
Fear not that ye have died for naught
We’ve learned the lesson that ye taught
In Flanders’ fields.

she read Col. John McCrae’s poem, In Flanders Fields and
it made such a impression on her, that she wrote this reply to it

Thanks Dan. Let's remember this day is more than a day off from school and a chance for stores to have sales:( I guess I feel strongly since my father was a Marine in WWII and my brother a Marine during Viet Nam. Semper Fi:D

Thank you Dan and Grog too! This is most certainly a day we should take the time to remember our Veterans!

Thanks Dan! Although we all know it's Veterans Day, many of us need to stop and reflect on what it really means...... besides a day off school  .

You are so right, Dan!

Thank you to all Veterans for protecting our freedom!

Thanks!
Yes; thanks to any veterans that may be reading this! Since I have been living in another country for 9 months it has made me appreciate those veterans even more. Tomorrow morning I will fly back to our beautiful America and live there with a whole new love for my country!!!!

My oldest brother (would have been 54) did two tours in Nam for the Marines. My youngest brother was Intelligence and Logistics as well as recovery for the Marines in Desert Storm. So proud of both! So glad to have one with me!

The music from the "American Pavillion" is my son's favorite song. Can even make an almost seventeen year old cry.

Thanks for reminding us all what tomorrow is really about!

I was telling my DD this today as we walked into Publix a vetern was collecting outside so I gave her money and told her why we were giving it and why she has no school tomorow!!
We thank all those who have have gave so much for us to live like we do!!! :)

Thanks, Dan!

DH is retired from 20.5 years in the Submarine force. A great group of folks! He's watching Band of Brothers right now.

Hope readers of the DIS remember to fly their flags tomorrow, especially, if not every day.

:D

thank you Dan! :)...You are so right!! Thanks for the post, the music and the thoughts! :)

I'm posting a few pic's I've put up before...but...I think most will agree...that now especially....the dedication, committment, and the love of Democracy, and America...that the Men and Women of our Armed Services hold...is truely worth our recognition...and heartfelt appreication....

Absolutely, let us remember. My husband is still in the reserves and in active duty served in the Persian Gulf War.

God bless the men and women who serve our country.

Thank you for the lovely remembrance, Dan. :)

Thank you for the reminder, Dan. God bless all the brave men and women who have fought to preserve our freedom. God bless America!!!

If anyone has the opportunity, visit a local veterens home, bring some goodies, socks, razors, after shave, candy, books and take a few hours to listen to their stories.

"So they collected the cripples, the wounded, the maimed
And they shipped us back home to Australia
The armless, the legless, the blind, the insane
Those proud wounded heroes of Suvla
And as our ship pulled into Circular Quay
I looked at the place where my legs used to be
And thank Christ there was nobody waiting for me
To grieve and to mourn and to pity
And the band played Waltzing Matilda
As they carried us down the gangway
But nobody cheered, they just stood and stared
Then turned all their faces away

And now every April I sit on my porch
And I watch the parade pass before me
And I watch my old comrades, how proudly they march
Reliving old dreams of past glory
And the old men march slowly, all bent, stiff and sore
The forgotten heroes from a forgotten war
And the young people ask, "What are they marching for?"
And I ask myself the same question
And the band plays Waltzing Matilda
And the old men answer to the call
But year after year their numbers get fewer
Some day no one will march there at all

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
Who'll come a waltzing Matilda with me
And their ghosts may be heard as you pass the Billabong
Who'll come-a-waltzing Matilda with me?"

Eric Bogle

betz,

I have And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda on CD. It a very moving song. I also this weekend just finished reading 1915: The Death of Innocence, which has a couple of really good chapters on the battle of Gallipoli. When I started reading it I didn't plan to finish it this weekend, but I guess it was appropriate that I did.

Thanks for the pics Goofyposter

Thanks again for this thread Dan
