On the Ship what's free and what costs money?

On the popcorn buckets you originally pay I think $10 for the bucket. Refills are like $3.50. Beer mug package refills are about $5.45. I think it'should the same for drinks of the day $5.45 or less.
Do they give you a coin for the popcorn bucket or do you have to bring back the bucket?

Question for the beer mug... Do they have cider on tap and if so can it be used with the mugs?

There is nothing free in a Disney cruise! Well unless you were gifted with the cruise I guess? It's included or additional cost! But we are getting ready for our first RCL cruise and the charges are driving me insane! I'm longing for DCL!

Really? What charges are you finding on RCI? We did the Serenade (amaaaazing Baltic this summer - no extra expenses) and are all booked up (dinners, shows, excursions) for the Allure in Feb. - no extra charges there either.

No, no, no!! Soda is FREE on DCL! Of course, you'll have to drink 600 gallons of soda to compensate for the extra cruise fare. :)

I think it's ridiculous that they make you pay for popcorn. My DD really wanted it last time so I got it for her, it wasn't even that good and not worth it imo.

Well I have to admit I love popcorn and would love an unlimited supply at no cost. Yet I am not the only one who would love that, kids and teens especially. Sorry I don't mean to generalize of bash on anyone. Movies run all throughout the length of the cruise along with the shows. Kids and teens have free run of the ship except the adult only areas. I have been on the cleaning end of a school function with free popcorn, and popcorn was everywhere. It is normally a huge mess. I couldn't imagine that kind of mess on the ship or the resources to clean the mess up. In my opinion by putting a price on the popcorn it limits who purchases it (not kids who can check themselves out of the club). Also they can predict when it's purchased so they aren't wasteful and are able to limit the areas in which the popcorn is being eaten. If not, you may find trails of popcorn heading from the theater down the hall all the way to the Atrium. Which is not something people want to see in the halls of a cruise ship. So do I want to pay for popcorn? No not really. But I do understand the reason for it and appreciate the fact that they discount the price if you are resourceful and reuse the bucket.

Well, popcorn is free on Carnival, freshly popped, hot, every night on deck during Dive In Movies, granted it's probably easier to clean up on deck then it is in a movie theater...but it's a nice touch imo. Decks are multi level so it's not exactly easy to clean up, but the crew manages to do it as the deck is spotless the next morning. Kids love it, and so do adults.

I would think sweeping up any spillages on a hard surface like a deck over night would be a lot easier than on carpet. And if it is only offered for the night movie on deck compared to the movie theater on dcl which is open all day and the waltt disney theater shows which are carpeted would make a BIG difference.

I agree it might be harder in a theater than on deck. Cleaning at the buffet must be even harder to do 3 times a day instead of just popcorn. It can be done. I hear it's a common complaint, it would be a nice touch if DCL listened to their customers. Popcorn is not expensive. It's not a make or break for me by any means..it would be an appreciated nice touch imo.

Yes it can be done but with staff a finite resource where do the staff come from? Which staff do you swap from one position to another housekeeper or 4?
Pick your poison carefully!

I can just picture all of the wasted popcorn found in staterooms throughout the ship. Also, how many people would put the popcorn in the hallway when they were finished with it, much like they do with room service dishes? I hate when people do this on ships and in hotels.

For phone calls - check your cell phone service provider. I was able to add coverage in Canada for $2 per day. Well worth it. I know there are places in Europe for less than $10/day (or maybe all of Europe, didn't look closely as that's not where I was going). It's more $$, but may not be as much as you think.

The past 2 summers we did the Norwegian and Mediterranean cruises. Since my wife and i have elderly Moms with health issues, I did upgrade my cell phone plan with Verizon to include international service that we could use in the ports to check in with them. I think the plan cost about $40 for a month. I don't think I needed that much service, and probably could have gone with a cheaper option, but I considered it a kind of insurance. It also helps that as of 2 years ago, the company I work for was acquired by Verizon and I got a discount on that price.

For Carribean/Bahamas cruises, I have not worried about it.

You can get free popcorn for the movies on DCL. You just need to book/upgrade/pay for a concierge room :-). Took my wife on a 5 night cruise on the Wonder for her 60th birthday and as a surprise for her booked the Walt suite. The price for that Royal suite wasn't too bad. We got the free popcorn, free unlimited internet access (I think the other non-Royal concierge rooms get a fixed amount of free internet), and free drinks and Hors d'oeuvres before both dinner times. We could also have had the specialty coffees at zero cost at Cove Cafe, but neither of us drink coffee).

That was the only time we have traveled concierge.

You can get free alcohol at the DVC sales presentations, once you are Gold level at the Gold/Platinum reception, and at the Captain's reception.

Once you are Platinum, you can get a free meal at Palo's and a free bottle of sparkling wine or I think a fruit platter.
