We are a party of 6 going in July. If I make our ressies for 6 and it turns out to be only 4, do I have to let them know ( I wouldn't want to lose out on the same time & have to rebook) way ahead of time or when I check in?????

I would just leave it as is and tell them when you check in at the restaurant.

It's your call. If you call and cancel you could risk losing your preferred time and restaurant, but if you modify the number of people in your party, it could open up a spot for someone looking for a reservation for a party of two. You could call and see if theres availabilty, and if there is book it. Then you could cancel the other reservation without worrying about losing your preferred time.
