I opened a Chase Southwest credit card in May 2016 for the 50,000 bonus Southwest points and paid the 99.00 fee. I have kept the card open. On the May 2017 statement I received my 6000 anniversary points.On the June 2017 I paid the 99.00 fee again.
Thinking of canceling this card, but do not want to loose the 6000 bonus points that I should be receiving on the May 2018 statement. My 99.00 fee should not hit the account until June 2018. My thinking is that those points are for the past year 2017-2018, but do not want to risk loosing the points from the May 2018 statement. I have a balance in my Rapid reward account, so they could pull the points out.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Once the points post in your RR account you are safe. I SM'd Chase from my on line account and cancelled mine. No problems.

We've done this before with no problem. IN the 12th month, the points are awarded and immediately deposited in our RR account. Before the next bill is due, we cancel the account. No problem. I even lost track once and was billed the next month for the $99 annual fee. I contacted Chase, asking that the fee be removed and the account closed, and they did it within 24 hours. No deduction from my RR account. Once those points post to your account, they are yours.

A couple months ago when I was about to cancel my card over the phone, I was lead to believe that if I cancelled the card, I would no longer be able to use points. So I kept the card open and got charged the $99 again last month. I was going to cancel it after our trip in January. So you are saying, you can cancel the card and still use the points?

Southwest points automatically post into your Southwest rapids rewards account on the billing date; they don't stay in your credit card account. I have NEVER lost RR points when closing a SW Chase VISA. If I did, I wouldn't have any points at all in my SW RR account, and believe me, I do!

The Chase Disney VISA works somewhat differently. Those rewards points are held in the credit card account; to use them you need to transfer them to a rewards redemption card. If you close a Disney VISA account without first actively transferring the points, you'll lose the points. However, if you have transferred points to a rewards card and then close the Disney VISA, you still have the points on the rewards card.

Interesting. I will be closing my SW card then. It only has $2,000 limit and zero balance. Not a card I even care to have or use. I opened it when we use to travel SW about 4 times a year, but we no longer travel that often.

@Tink3815 :
The points are deposited into a rewards program that is administrated by Southwest Airlines - your Rapid Rewards account. If you fly Southwest and get points from paying for a ticket they are your points and not subject to any Chase rule. Chase is a separate company that offers a cobranded card with Southwest as a partner. You are able to generate income for Chase by using your Southwest card. Chase rewards you by giving you rapid rewards points. Once delivered to your account, they cannot take them back.

If you cancel after the points are deposited, you will get to keep them.

Sometimes now, Chase will offer a retention bonus - usually it's an annual fee waiver. Since you intend to cancel you might call after you see the points deposit and perhaps you will get the fee waived. Good luck!

If you do close the account and have points left in RR, be careful to do some activity to keep them alive, because they can expire.
