"On Demand" Animator sketches question...

The title might be off but I didn't know what else to call them. I know that there's usually an animator inside the shop in the animation building at HS who can sketch pretty much any character. The price depends on how many characters. My question is, will they sketch two characters that are not normally together (appear in any movies together)? For example Stitch and Goofy or Tigger and Belle... just completely weird pairings.

Thanks for any and all help!

That's a great question! You could purchase two individual drawings and combine them in a frame. :earsboy:

I was not aware of this. Going in Feb, GD 16th bday. This would be great as she draws Disney herself. Does anyone know what kind of cost to expect? thanks

I've enjoyed reading this thread because I love Disney animation. I'm an artist and an art professor. In my early artist days I used to draw a ton of "disney style" sketches of various characters for friends and family.

I have one in my office at the University. Students are less intimidated when they see Mickey Mouse on my wall.

My DD went to the artist in Animation shop at DHS to get a picture. She could not find the character she wanted so she asked. They said yes they could do that one but then they went to a notebook and showed her the options. Now she didn't ask for any customization but it felt like they would only draw what was in the book. We came back a few hours later to pick it up. It was around $40.

When you meet the artist at the Animation Gallery, s/he will have a binder containing all of the sketches that they do. You could certainly request a custom sketch combining 2 single character sketches. I don't know if they could do a completely custom sketch with the characters posed differently, though. Can't hurt to ask. We've gotten a couple of sketches, and they will add text to the drawings.

Thank you to everyone for all the replies! :)

It's good to know that you can combine 2 single characters. I'll ask about a different pose, although the poses in the book might work as they are.

Keep in mind that the artist is tracing, not actually drawing. So they are limited to the binder of images they have been given. They can't actually customise anything.

Wait, wait, wait, so they trace? And people spend 40 bucks for someone to trace something for them? Well heck, I can print off and trace whatever you want, guys. Just gimme 40 bucks!

I understand only being able to draw what's in the book, but I find it hard to believe that people would be raving about the on demand sketches if they were traced. I'm sure someone here has seen the artist drawing (or tracing) their request and can confirm one way or the other. Anyone?

Ummmm, it is traced. We have watched them in California Adventure and conversed with the "artist."

The artist uses a huge drafting like table that has a light source beneath the drawing area and the template is illuminated. The artist then sketches/traces using the templates guidelines.

Years ago, the sketches were more reasonable. The CM who did the sketches for our DDs was a college student. She had taken drafting classes at a high school where she was recruited by DLR.

Even the artists who sketch the custom artwork watches use guidelines. That's why everything is in a binder and you have to select your choice.

Correct! They are traced! We have had 4 drawings done and stayed to watch while we spoke with the artist. I think it's to make sure the characters all look the same. We were also told they are not able to do much more than put a name and date on the artwork.

I feel like I told a secret... Sorry! But don't assume that just because the image is traced that there is no talent involved. Many of the sketch artists have formal training, and what they are doing is skillful. But it is why they use a light table and why the characters they sketch look so consistent, there's no artistic license to draw them in the artist's personal style.
