OMG: Yacht Club Hosted Cadaver Surgery in Ballroom

Admitting straight out I did not bother to read the article however I don't see why it matters what type of conference it was.
They paid to have their conference there and as long as guests were not free to roam through the conference room to witness dead bodies then it doesn't make any difference to me.
It's worth reading the article. Probably what stood out most to me was that that basic event rooms may not be structured to accommodate the specific and unique needs of such a gathering. (Spatter, leaking of fluids, washing up of participants, etc.)

Hotel GM here.. We take business like this, without a problem. Disney build the conference space for events like this. There would be no reason for them to turn this away. Lets never forget, the Mouse is about profit, first and foremost.

There might be a random person like the OP that would be shocked and horrified, but as this thread shows vast majority just /shrug and move on.

Guys, if you don’t like a thread topic, don’t read it. As long as it’s within the DIS guidelines, people can start a thread on any resorts-related topic they like.
It's the OMG part that sort of seems out of place. OMG they hosted a cadaver surgery in the lobby. Yes. In a ballroom? Really needs an OMG? So yeah, the topic can be started but if you start it don't be surprised when folks say "really? that is worth getting upset over?"

Sounds like sensationalism, possibly to drive traffic to the site.

Totally thought this was going to be some new Halloween thing. LOL!

Doesn't bother me. Dead people are harmless.

I was not shocked by the thread or article, because I have heard about these conferences before. BUT, I do not think it's "out of place" at all, just because you or others are not shocked by this, I know if I asked a bunch of people I would get a lot of OMG's, and shocked responses. I guess I should tell them how ridiculous their reaction is.

I know they have conferences about everything, but actually working on cadavers in a space not designed to be sanitized properly doesn't seem very sensible.

Actually yes I would tell them that

Im super confused by the quoted person talking about blood leaking. By the time the person is available for such procedures there’s no blood to leak. Maybe that person needs some sort of refresher course in how they are prepared?

But hey maybe my year of cadaver dissection lab was all wrong. (And I’d had a year of studying from an already dissected cadaver in undergrad)

As for if a hotel is appropriate in some sort of decency way, when a person donates themselves to science they are donating the knowledge that can be gleaned. Knowledge at a big convention is still knowledge. Big conventions can’t be held in tiny labs. So I see no problem. People learning from a donated body is exactly the point of the donation.

It's an OMG to me. I've never thought of this as a possibility in a hotel. I'm not sure how I feel about it to be honest. It seems kind of gross, yet fascinating at the same time. I certainly wouldn't be telling someone their reaction is ridiculous though.

Well, it surprised me! Not in a "I'll never stay there again!" way, but more the fact that I had no idea this type of thing happened outside of a medical environment/lab. Yeah, I think it's a little creepy but after reading the article and seeing how it's more common I guess i'll just try to think about it. Hopefully I won't ever see a body being wheeled in - i'm guessing that would never happen.

When you operate on a cadaver, you do not need a sanitized space. The cadaver cannot get sepsis.

You need appropriate stuff that can be cleaned after. This may include disposable tarps and stuff. It's not like they're just plopping a fresh corpse on the nice table cloth and whipping out a steak knife.

Never thought about this before. I attended a conference teaching cardiac surgeons to suture something new into a heart. It was in a nice hotel and we had pig hearts all around that the surgeons practiced on. It just seemed so normal given who was doing what. Never thought a thing about the location. Guess as long as the room is cleaned it doesn’t matter to me.

At WDW, a lot of things make my stomach turn and skin crawl, but a cadaver in the YC conference center isn’t one of them. What does make me kind of ill? Guests with poor restroom hygiene, people who lick food off their fingers at a buffet then pick up a serving spoon others will be using, toddlers sucking on the bars in ride queues . . . . As far as health concerns, the cadaver is probably the least of our problems.

I really don't understand why this is an issue. I've stayed at many Disney convention hotels and never once have I ever noticed who was there on convention.
Even at the Swan/Dolphin and Coronado Springs.

I've been living my life never thinking about something like this!!! Now it will be the only thing on my mind at buffet's hahaha!! So much worse than a cadaver at a conference...
