Olivia's in Old Key West

My DH was wondering about the Key Lime Pie and the Conch Chowder at Olivia's in OKW. Has anyone tried either of these? He's wondering if we should try these or pass? We'll be on our first trip "home" on 11th of September.

The key lime pie is very good, dont know about the conch chowder, i do know i cant stomach the clam chowder at cape mays, long story

The Conch Chowder is a tomato base, and somewhat spicey. I personally didn't care for it, but I don't care for any tomato based chowders. If you like Manhattan style chowder, you will probably like the Conch Chowder. The key lime pie is good. Olivia's also has some of the best breakfasts at WDW. In addition to the chowder, they also serve a special soup of the day...it is usually delicious if you are less adventurous.

We really love the key lime pie. It is really tart and I like extra whip cream. I bought the Disney cookbook and it has the recipe. It is simple to make and I have gotten rave reviews.

Red and spicy almost smacks of something close to Minorcan Clam Chowder (found over at nearby St Augustine Fla.) I REALLY like that -- but you're right, if you're expecting New England, this is a whole 'nother cup of tea...er, soup, I mean.

A bit OT -- I still remember when Olivia's had the Pooh Bear Breakfast. It was so nice -- very small and "personal" in there! I took my boys there a few times when they were just toddlers (we were always staying there at the time, too -- made it VERY convenient!) Boy that bear gets around -- after that, he moved over to Artist's point for a stint. Now he's at neither venue. I guess nowadays you have to go Crystal Palace -- does anyone know if he still show up at the Grand Floridian? I had heard somewhere that SOME of the Pooh folks show up, but not always the bear himself -- that they have sort of a "smathering" of English characters, like a Pooh character, an ALice character, Mary Poppins - something like that. No guarantee on the Honey Man himself. My dd would like a b'fast with Pooh next trip - but I figure the only sure shot for that these days is CP. Is that correct?

This past trip I had lunch one day at Olivia's the only thing I had was soup, the conch chowder. As Chuck said it is like Manhattan clam chowder. I prefer tomato based chowder. It was OK, not the very best, nor the very worst of what I've had.

We like Olivia's. We especially like lunch there. Everything seems so fresh. The biggest problem is that it gets crowded at lunch.

My favorite breakfast at Olivia's is the sweet potato hash. If you like sweet potatoes, you should like this. Poached eggs on top and some rye toast and I'm in heaven.

Even their standard 2 egg breakfast with toast, grits or potatoes, and choce of ham/bacon/sausage is great. Anyone remember when they used to have chicken breat as a breakfast option...it didn't "set as heavy" as pork for the summer time. They also used to have "Eggs Olivia", similar to Eggs Benedict, but with an orange based sauce---it was yummy. It would be nice if they had a "special" breakfast feature once a week that brings back some of their old classics.

Not sure if it is true, but a poster a while back said you could no longer order from Olivia's to go...I will check it out this week b/c I thought that would be such a nice option.

I thought you could still get anything from Olivia's, but pick it up around the corner at Good's?? In any case, I love Olivia's for breakfast and lunch. I even ate Easter dinner there a year or two ago--I wanted a hamburger, while my DH wanted the pricey ham dinner. They actually made me a hamburger and DH said the ham was wonderful. I was just hungry for a hamburger, and no one would accommodate me on Easter except Olivia's. Hamburger wasn't even on the holiday menu, so I thought that was really nice of them!

Goods to Go has a limited version of the Olivia's menu. They don't offer everything, but offer a small amount of what is offered on the full Olivia's menu. Not sure what that means for breakfast, but for dinner, for example, there was only one salad offered when there were several on the menu.

This is one thing I would change about OKW (and we definitely love the resort). Anything that is offered at Olivia's should be available "to-go". Period. The whole idea of having to go to "Goods to Go" and then not being able to order everything is just bizarre (to us). If it is on the menu, it should be available to order to-go.

As for the key lime pie and conch-chowder, we love both of them. Fantastic!
